How does one design an app to work with the page flipping footing pedals for reading pages/pdfs and how does one tell an app from another app to change the "page"? I'm looking at making some apps to do some stuff like foot controlling pdf page changes(page up, etc) and other things and would like
What I am talking about is simply being able to have hands free reading and need either design an app that accepts wireless/remote page flipping and/or interact with another app.
Does android support some simple interface too allow this, and if so, where can I find some more info on it? (there are BT pedals that supposedly work well for this and I want to know how this is done on by the app side and the pedal side)

I am thinking about creating a text-based game (similar to gamebooks) for android device. In this moment only theoretically. Do you have some advice please, which way to go?
You probably know how gamebooks works, but the gamebook I want, will be very easy, should work like this:
User has shown some image, text and 3 options (questions), he decides which option to click, then a new page is showing (according to the clicked option) with another image, text and another 3 options. Then again, the user clicks one option, another page opens, etc.
My question is not how to do it programmatically, but how to start with this in Android Studio, what system to use for such game on android or which way to go.
Because I think it has no sense to create intents after each click, as there might be hundreds of clickable options.
I have already created such game on my website with php/html/js, but I want to create it also offline for android.
Intents implies one activity per page - unmaintainable.
You should work with a database and load based on user interaction. So you'll need to learn about Databases and Asynchronicity (working in the background while updating the UI so the user knows)
So I am using the Home sample to build an application that creates a second home screen for the user. The idea is to be able to have only one user account yet restrict certain access to chosen applications. I have managed to ensure that all of the applications are invisible in the XML yet I am struggling with how to change this to make certain apps visible.
Is it possible to write a whitelist of accepted apps for instance the preinstalled apps or child friendly apps for children who game using the android device and then put in a Java method to access this white list? This is the only way I can think to make it work.
If anyone knows the correct way can you please help.

Ok so I discovered how to do this.
In the home sample they provide a for loop in the Home.java file that covers all apps and displays them. It take a simple if statement to restrict the apps that can be viewed -

Still very basic but provides me with a good enough UI so that kids cannot see apps I don't want them to.
I'm creating my first app in iOS and I'm very accustomed to developing in eclipse for Android. My first step is that I need to create a dashboard as the homescreen. I'm a little "confused" as of which layout I should choose in xcode. In android I always select the most basic of settups, and I end up with a blank activity and a blank layout. That's where I would like to start, since that's what I'm used to. I'm wondering if any experienced iOS dev can point me in the right direction into which template to start with.
It seems really easy to just say to use an empty application, but If I'm going to have to do a lot more settup that is not worth my time, then please enlighten me.
You' probably want to go with a single view application. This will give you a template with a view controller and a blank interface file (your choice of xib or storyboard) that you can build from. From there you can add what ever you want.
Using this template you will immediately be able to build your app to the simulator or to your device. However, if you already have an idea of how you would like your app to work, you could choose tab based if your app should have multiple tabs and most of the work will be done for you, or a utility based app will give you two view controllers, one of which will be presented modally. Etc, etc...
I went through some posts, but most of them discuss placing a image or a string with information on it.
I however need to place button that manipulates some call features.
Is there a method to do that universally works throughout all android distributions?
(I thought to pop up custom screen with my button above usual screen. Is that good idea, or is there more straightforward way to achieve this?)

On stock devices there isn't going to be a legit way to put your own button "on" any portion of the Dialer application Activities (including incoming call screen). This kind of functionality would require the Dialer to explicitly provide an API for it. The stock system prevents applications in the background from placing their own clickable regions "on top of" whatever is currently in the foreground . (It's a good thing too, the bad reasons to do this far outweigh the legit ones.)
If you are wanting to do this you're going to have to look into building your own version of the OS that allows for it. OR potentially if you unlock your device enough to be able to install your own application that handles all of the functionality of the Dialer. Then you could provide an API for a third party application to do it(or just "bake in" your button to the Dialer) But I imagine that being able to get it all hooked up correctly to actually make your calls would be mighty difficult.
I'm working on an android app that has a section that feels like an iPhone home screen. There's a bunch of pages that are essentially displaying the same data in different configurations and users should be able to quickly move between them. Generally there won't be more than 4 or 5 pages.
I could just replicate the experience with the iPhone home screen with multiple dots on the bottom of the page, but that doesn't feel very android-friendly. What's the design pattern in android for viewing and interacting with this type of view? I know the android home screen has a variant with dots, but I've never seen it used within an app.
Screenshots or links to existing apps would be great.
The stock Android launcher has left/right paging behavior on the home screen, and it's open source.
This is the Workspace class. Pay special attention to the onTouchEvent and onInterceptTouchEvent methods. The utility classes Scroller and VelocityTracker are used together to define the behavior for snapping to a page when the user lets go from a drag.

Hootsuite uses this design pattern and it works well in my opinion. I don't think it affects the user experience on Android in a negative way. I find that the biggest problem with people porting iPhone applications to Android is the fact that they try to port every single design pattern over. I don't think what you're trying to implement will be an issue.
