I'm creating an Android application and there's a page like this, a weather page is held inside a tabhost:
The MainActivity class:
public class MainActivity extends TabActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
//I used this but it's not working
requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
TabHost mTabHost = getTabHost();
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("first").setIndicator("First").setContent(
new Intent(this, FirstActivity.class)
));
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("second").setIndicator("Second").setContent(
new Intent(this, SecondActivity.class)
));
mTabHost.setCurrentTab(0);
}
And the SecondActivity contains the weather:
public class SecondActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE);
this.getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN, WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_weather);
if (savedInstanceState == null) {
getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction()
.add(R.id.container, new WeatherFragment())
.commit();
}
}
The problem is that I want to hide the actionbar <> as it looks really awful in this. As you can see that I tried to request FEATURE_NO_TITLE or set FLAG_FULLSCREEN, as well as set android:theme="#style/Theme.AppCompat.NoActionBar" in AndroidManifest, but nothing works well.
(In addition, is there anyway to set the weather interface fullscreen? As it has a small gap between edges)
Thanks for your help.
Change ActionBarActivity to Activity in your SecondActivity.
public class SecondActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
to
public class SecondActivity extends Activity {
And if this not give you the expected answer then add below in AndroidManifest:
<activity android:name=".MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#android:style/Theme.Holo.Light.NoActionBar.Fullscreen">
</activity>
Or in your SecondActivity add below:
requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE);
getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN,
WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_weather);
In your activity xml there is a layout called appbarlayout please delete it it will work.
in my activity xml

My app has two activities: MainActivity and OnlineActivity. The code snippet of onCreate method of MainActivity.java is:
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
Button btnOnline = (Button)findViewById(R.id.Online);
if (btnOnline != null){
btnOnline.setOnClickListener(new Button.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
online();
}
});
}
}
The online method inside MainActivity.java is defined as follows:
private void online() {
Intent intent = new Intent(packageContext:MainActivity.this, OnlineActivity.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
Similarly, code snippet of onCreate method of OnlineActivity.java is:
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.content_main);}
The activity_main.xml has a button (button id is Online) and the content_main.xml has a simple text view.
While running the app, the button is displayed first, while pressing on the button the app crashes without any error (next view is not displayed).
The Logcat (Verbose) is as follows:
After crashing, the displayed message is My_App keeps stopping. And I get App info and Close app options.
What could have gone wrong in my code?
Thank you.
In the MainActivity.java Please change the inside online method:
private void online() {
try{
startActivity(new Intent(MainActivity.this,OnlineActivity.class));
}
catch (Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
With the code snippets provided, I don't see any reason why the app should crash.
Just for the sanity check, please compare the below snippet with yours:
NOTE: below code runs without crash and the ToolBar isn't necessary if you aren't using those. I hope this helps.
MainActivity.java
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
private AppCompatButton onlineButton;

I built a Settings activity/screen for my app using this guide. Example code is bellow.
What am I missing to be able to add a Toolbar to this new activity with a back arrow in it's left side?
AndroidManifest.xml
....
<activity
android:name=".SettingsActivity"
android:label="Settings"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.NoActionBar"/>
....
preferences.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<PreferenceScreen xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<CheckBoxPreference
android:key="pref_sync"
android:title="#string/pref_sync"
android:summary="#string/pref_sync_summ"
android:defaultValue="true" />
<ListPreference
android:dependency="pref_sync"
android:key="pref_syncConnectionType"
android:title="#string/pref_syncConnectionType"
android:dialogTitle="#string/pref_syncConnectionType"
android:entries="#array/pref_syncConnectionTypes_entries"
android:entryValues="#array/pref_syncConnectionTypes_values"
android:defaultValue="#string/pref_syncConnectionTypes_default" />
</PreferenceScreen>
SettingsFragment.java
public static class SettingsFragment extends PreferenceFragment {
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Load the preferences from an XML resource
addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.preferences);
}
...
}
SettingsActivity.java
public class SettingsActivity extends Activity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Display the fragment as the main content.
getFragmentManager().beginTransaction()
.replace(android.R.id.content, new SettingsFragment())
.commit();
}
}
You must include a toolbar in your activity layout. For example:
activity_main.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".activities.SettingsActivity">
<include
android:id="#+id/app_bar"
layout="#layout/app_bar" />
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_below="#+id/app_bar"/>
</RelativeLayout>
app_bar.xml
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary"
app:popupTheme="#style/AppTheme.PopupOverlay" />
In your Activity.onCreate() get the toolbar and set a home button (the little arrow):
Toolbar toolbar = (Toolbar)findViewById(R.id.toolbar);
setSupportActionBar(toolbar);
getSupportActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
Set the SettingsActivity to be a child of parent MainActivity:
<activity
android:name=".activities.SettingsActivity"
android:label="#string/title_activity_main"
android:parentActivityName=".activities.MainActivity" />
And that will give you that little arrow.
Also, do this:
public class SettingsActivity extends AppCompatActivity
Not this:
public class SettingsActivity extends Activity
In order to use support library.
I have an android app with a UserSettingsActivity derived from PreferenceActivity. When I open this activity, no menu bar is shown.
In order to have the 'bar' or 'action bar' on top of the settings screen, I searched for it in google on found this link and this link. Because the first answer seems outdated, I tried the suggestion in the second link which does not work. Therefore I am posting this question again.. Here are the pieces of code I am using:
preferences.xml ( I added just the android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar part):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<PreferenceScreen xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
app:theme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Dark.ActionBar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:minHeight="?attr/actionBarSize"
app:navigationContentDescription="#string/abc_action_bar_up_description"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary"
app:navigationIcon="?attr/homeAsUpIndicator"
app:title="#string/action_settings"
/>
<ListPreference
android:title="#string/UpdateInterval"
android:summary="#string/UpdateIntervalText"
android:key="updateInterval"
android:defaultValue="24"
android:entries="#array/listArray"
android:entryValues="#array/listValues" />
<ListPreference
android:title="#string/LimitSetting"
android:summary="#string/LimitSettingText"
android:key="limitSetting"
android:entries="#array/limitArray"
android:entryValues="#array/limitValues" />
<Preference
android:key="reset"
android:title="Reset database"
android:summary="This will remove every entry in the database"
/>
</PreferenceScreen>
and UserSettingsActivity.java (I added the onPostCreate part):
public class UserSettingActivity extends PreferenceActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
getFragmentManager().beginTransaction().replace(android.R.id.content, new MyPreferenceFragment()).commit();
}
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
LinearLayout root = (LinearLayout)findViewById(android.R.id.list).getParent().getParent().getParent();
Toolbar bar = (Toolbar) LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.xml.preferences, root, false);
root.addView(bar, 0); // insert at top
bar.setNavigationOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
finish();
}
});
}
public class MyPreferenceFragment extends PreferenceFragment {
#Override
public void onCreate(final Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.preferences); // <<-- ERROR HERE
// doing something here
}
}
}
However, I get the following error:
Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar cannot be cast to android.preference.Preference
on the marked line. Without the added pieces in those two files the app did work, without the (action)-bar, however...
What seems to be the problem here?
Try this.
Extend your activity with AppCompatActivity
Then add toolbar. Refer here: -http://coderzpassion.com/android-working-with-material-design/
PreferenceActivity is now deprecated. Use PreferenceFragment inside any other activity, which can be extended from any parent activity other than PreferenceActivity
I am developing an android app. I was able to add toolbar using support library to the app. Now i want to add tabs to the app. But the tab should be non-swipeable. I searched the internet but all the questions and articles were for swipeable tabs.
toolbar.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/toolbarsdfs"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:minHeight="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimaryDark"
app:theme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.ActionBar">
</android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar>
</LinearLayout>
ToolbarActivty.Java
public class ToolbarActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.toolbar);
Toolbar toolbar = (Toolbar) findViewById(R.id.toolbarsdfs);
if (toolbar != null) {
setSupportActionBar(toolbar);
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
}
}
}
This is what i want to acheive.
If you are not using swipable tabs try tabs by using custome Tabhoast. but the simplest is adding buttons and checnge the fragment above according to button click.
I am following the Android Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide and there is an example using ViewPager through the 2 files:
The file res/values/ids.xml defines an id in XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<resources>
<item type="id" name="viewPager" />
</resources>
And the Java source file CrimePagerActivity.java uses that id:
public class CrimePagerActivity extends FragmentActivity {
private ViewPager mViewPager;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
mViewPager = new ViewPager(this);
mViewPager.setId(R.id.viewPager);
setContentView(mViewPager);
I have tried to change the example to have a ViewPager object being inflated from an XML layout file res/layout/crime_pager.xml (instead of just using an id):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ViewPager
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/view_pager" />
</LinearLayout>
And then I am trying to use that object in the CrimePagerActivity.java:
public class CrimePagerActivity extends FragmentActivity {
private ViewPager mViewPager;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.crime_pager);
mViewPager = (ViewPager)findViewById(R.id.view_pager);
Unfortunately, this does not work and fails with a RuntimeException and little info (here fullscreen):
What is the problem here please?
change:
<ViewPager
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/view_pager" />
to
<android.support.v4.view.ViewPager
android:id="#+id/view_pager"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
</android.support.v4.view.ViewPager>
