Listening to location changes is better using a LocationManager and implementing LocationListener, you dont need GoogleClient to listen to the location updates.
To listen to locations update correctly you must do the following
//Declare a location manager
private LocationManager locationManager;
//Request location update either by GPS or NETWORK and for accurate results use //GPS
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 1000, 3, this);
//and the new locations will go to the onLocationChanged(Location location) //method that you already overrided
now to stop listening to the location updates just use this
locationManager.removeUpdates(this);

mFusedLocationApi.getLocation() method ALWAYS returns null

Ok this is code taken from https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/android-api/current-place-tutorial. My problem is: fusedLocationApi.getLocation() method ALWAYS returns null. I've seen many related articles on stackOverflow as well as other sites. I've been searching high and low and I just don't understand why this happens or can find solution to resolve this.

Try Google Utilities library to get location easily with permission..
locationHandler = new LocationHandler(this)
.setLocationListener(new LocationListener() {
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
// Get the best known location
}
}).start();
For more details about location handler, read out wiki...
check the target version in your build.gradle file, it should be 23 or higher.
Solved. I completely erased my permission code and followed this tutorial from scratch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2JaVke71RY. Worked perfectly.

User's location on google map using GPS [duplicate]

I want google maps to show the location of the user. I tried this code, but it did not work on Android 6.
private GoogleMap map;
LocationManager lm;
LocationListener ll;
Location l;
LatLng pos;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.start_layout);
lm = (LocationManager) this.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
ll = new LocationListener() {
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
l = (Location) location;
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {}
};
SupportMapFragment mapFragment = (SupportMapFragment) getSupportFragmentManager()
.findFragmentById(R.id.nMap);
mapFragment.getMapAsync(this);
}
#Override
public void onMapReady(GoogleMap googleMap) {
map = googleMap;
if(ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) == PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
lm.requestLocationUpdates(lm.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, ll);
}
pos = new LatLng(l.getLatitude(), l.getLongitude());
// Add a marker in Sydney and move the camera
map.setMyLocationEnabled(true);
map.addMarker(new MarkerOptions().position(pos).title("Marker in Sydney"));
map.moveCamera(CameraUpdateFactory.newLatLng(pos));
}
Here are the permissions I've set:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
For using FusedLocationProviderClient with Google Play Services 11 and higher:
see here:
How to get current Location in GoogleMap using FusedLocationProviderClient
For using (now deprecated) FusedLocationProviderApi:
If your project uses Google Play Services 10 or lower, using the FusedLocationProviderApi is the optimal choice.
The FusedLocationProviderApi offers less battery drain than the old open source LocationManager API.
Also, if you're already using Google Play Services for Google Maps, there's no reason not to use it.
Here is a full Activity class that places a Marker at the current location, and also moves the camera to the current position.
It also checks for the Location permission at runtime for Android 6 and later (Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo).
In order to properly handle the Location permission runtime check that is necessary on Android M/Android 6 and later, you need to ensure that the user has granted your app the Location permission before calling mGoogleMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true) and also before requesting location updates.

Sorry but that's just much too much overhead (above), short and quick, if you have the MapFragment, you also have to map, just do the following:
if (ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) == PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
googleMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true)
} else {
// Show rationale and request permission.

Get current GPS location on android [duplicate]

I want google maps to show the location of the user. I tried this code, but it did not work on Android 6.
private GoogleMap map;
LocationManager lm;
LocationListener ll;
Location l;
LatLng pos;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.start_layout);
lm = (LocationManager) this.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
ll = new LocationListener() {
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
l = (Location) location;
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {}
};
SupportMapFragment mapFragment = (SupportMapFragment) getSupportFragmentManager()
.findFragmentById(R.id.nMap);
mapFragment.getMapAsync(this);
}
#Override
public void onMapReady(GoogleMap googleMap) {
map = googleMap;
if(ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) == PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
lm.requestLocationUpdates(lm.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, ll);
}
pos = new LatLng(l.getLatitude(), l.getLongitude());
// Add a marker in Sydney and move the camera
map.setMyLocationEnabled(true);
map.addMarker(new MarkerOptions().position(pos).title("Marker in Sydney"));
map.moveCamera(CameraUpdateFactory.newLatLng(pos));
}
Here are the permissions I've set:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />

But from Logcat I am Having this error, Which makes no sense to me as I have called buildGoogleApiClient();before any Operation in my existing code. Please see my logcat output:

Looks like you are using your mGoogleApiClient before it is initialized.
The initialization of
private Location mLastLocation = LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.getLastLocation(mGoogleApiClient);
should be done after you have initialized mGoogleApiClient in onCreate.
So change to
private Location mLastLocation;
and add
mLastLocation = LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.getLastLocation(mGoogleApiClient);
in your onCreate after buildGoogleApiClient();
I also got the same problem. But it got solved by doing these following steps:
Add the following meta-data tag in the andriod manifest file, note google_play_services_version is given a value of 8487000
<activity android:name=".MainActivity" android:label="#string/app_name" >
<meta-data
android:name="com.google.android.gms.version"
android:value="#integer/google_play_services_version"/>
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
In app level build.gradle , add the following line in dependencies:
compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-location:8.4.0'
