I have a LinearLayout inside which I am including a different layout. Something like this

Now what I would like to do is, to programmatically change the "marginBottom" of the included layout (new_layout). How can I do that?
I tried calling various LayoutParams and tried changing the margin, but not sure if it is the right approach. Any help greatly appreciated.

Try this.. Make the Linear layout using your id

You should not directly change or modify margins in the <include> tag. This tag is just adding the layout resource in the current view hierarchy without adding an extra parent view container.
So essentially what you want to do is set margins on the root view container of the "included layout". That is you should directly call findViewById() for the root view and set all of your margins on it pro grammatically and as the included view's parent is a Linear-layout you should use
LinerLayout.LayoutParams params = (LinerLayout.LayoutParams) includedRootView.getLayoutParams();
params.setMargins();
includedViewRoot.setLayoutParams(params);`
You can change it by dimensions also

Please pay particular attention to the LinearLayout with the id: buttonLayoutWrapper and it's child ToggleButton as those are what I need to add dynamically. For simplicity sake I'm only showing one column, but would repeat this for 7 more.
I tried creating a separate class that Extends LinearLayout and adds the ToggleButton thinking that I could get the weight that way, but no luck.
No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the ToggleButton to obey the layout_weight.

It seems that I need to have a parent LinearLayout that sets weightSum for the layout weight to work in the XML version. However, I can't seem to figure out how to add a LinearLayout parent to this that can then be added to the FrameLayout without getting a strange:

Try the following. It adds the ToggleButton to the LinearLayout then adds the LinearLayout to the FrameLayout. I think it is what you are looking for. (Comment out the LinearLayout and ToggleButton in the XML so you can see this work.)

I am trying to create an Activity with a ScrollView in it. In the ScrollView will be "boxes" (sort of like a button) that is just a bit smaller than the width of the parent view and spaced slightly apart vertically. Because the boxes will have a couple different size text in a couple areas on them, I think I need to make the out of RelativeLayouts. (I would post a picture but can't with my reputation point so hopefully this makes sense).
I tried create an XML for the activity and than programatically adding the relativeviews. I got it to work, sort of, but am having trouble with the box spacing.

I get the scrollable section, no problem. Problem is my blue "boxes" appear to be touching one another and I can't figure out how to make them look like buttons with padding left and right and between them. I tried
rlView.setPadding(20,20,20,20);
right after the setBackground color. All that appears to do is pad the text... not the RelativeViews.
Any suggestions no how to get this to work?

This compiles and runs, but the setMargins is not working. My screen has the "UPDATE ALL" button at the top like it should and (19) "Text #" with a blue background, but they are full width and touching one another so it is a solid blue background.
I am getting close, but not sure how to get the margins to set correctly for the rlView relativeview (not the textviews).
Hopefully this helps explain what I am seeing now..

For each entry in the FOR, I had to use a LINEARLAYOUT to be able to set the margins properly, and in that LINEARLAYOUT I had to use a RELATIVELAYOUT to use the addRules to get the proper positioning of the TextViews.

When you set layout params, it needs to be that of the parent.
Switch:
L.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(1080, 400));
To:
L.setLayoutParams(new RelativeLayout.LayoutParams(1080, 400));
in your LinearLayout, just set
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"

You might also need, if you have already set the layout
L.requestLayout();
In Kotlin you can do the following:
L.layoutParams = RelativeLayout.LayoutParams(1080, 400)
And then call L.requestLayout() to apply changes
The following works, but I want to eliminate the xml so that I can change the image programmatically:

In the documentation there is a table that maps XML to Java.
For instance: android:src is equivalent to setImageResource().
You will need to check the inherited table for attributes from any super class.
For instance: android:id is equivalent to setId().
width, height, and gravity are all set in a LayoutParams object and passed to setLayoutParams().
Understand that not every XML attribute has a matching Java method (and vica versa), but all of the attributes you are using do.
An Example, let's call this file activity_main.xml:
