I've downloaded Android Studio from the official website, the one for M1 chip (arm).
Basically running it for the first time, the error is the following:
An error occurred while trying to compute required packages
I was searching about it the whole day to figure out a way to make Android Studio work, but that error keeps showing. Not completely sure if it's related to M1 Macbook, as on my Intel one it works as expected.
What I already tried to do:
Installing the command line tools, then placing it on SDK folder (Users/user/Library/Android/sdk). Then added the bin to the PATH (Reference)
After doing that, when executing the sdkmanager on terminal I get the following message Could not find or load main class com.android.sdklib.tool.sdkmanager.SdkManagerCli
Then I searched again and it leaded me to this thread, then as on the answers I tried to rename the folder, then other tries not related. I fell into many links and references that did not work at all.
After that I try to check what happens if I click on New Project, then the following is shown:
The Android SDK location cannot be at the filesystem root
As the message indicates, the issue is The Android SDK location cannot be at the filesystem root, so I searched again about it
I looked into that and got to a few links, for example this one and this one. Before doing that search I clicked on the Edit button, which lead me to the Android SDK to be updated/installed (Nice!), so I had to delete the content I had on Android folder (inside Library) and clicked next...then, I got the same message An error occurred while trying to compute required packages.
Then I thought "ok, maybe if I change the SDK location", so I changed to ../Documents/sdk, which ended up in the same result
Seems like no matter what I do, it ends up showing up that same message.
When I run java -version that's what I see:
java version "1.8.0_311"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_311-b11)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.311-b11, mixed mode)
Did anyone have the same issue? Am I doing something wrong? Not sure how to proceed from here, despite of the Android Studio version I download it's always the same result.
Any help is appreciated.
This is what solved it for me on my M1.
Go to Android Studio Preview and download the latest Canary build for Apple chip (Chipmunk). Don't worry this is just to get through the initial setup.
Unpack it, run it, let it install all the SDK components, accept licenses, etc as usual.
Once it's done, simply close it and delete it.
Now when you start your stable Android Studio (Arctic Fox) you should not see the error.
I tried over a dozen 2021 stable and Canary builds from https://developer.android.com/studio/archive and couldn't get any of them to work.
This is the only thing I could find that worked:
Download, unpackage and run Android Studio 3.6.3 android-studio-ide-192.6392135-mac.zip from here.
Proceed through the initial setup and let it download and install the SDK. Ignore any errors at the end.
Delete this version and open the stable Android Studio like normal.
You can now proceed through setup!
I also faced this issue a couple days and I changed my mind to not use Android Studio. And It's fixed!
My alternative option is to download IntelliJ community edition and install Android SDK to your machine.
Image for IntelliJ Download Page
After (IntelliJ) installation is complete,
You need also to create new project, select android then download SDK. (thanks for #SteveRoger 's comment)
then open Android Studio again and follow its setup wizard. It will show that my machine has been already installed Android SDK and it can run perfectly at this time.
Hope this is an alternative solution for you.
Have a great day.
I solved the problem with these steps:
Install the old Android Studio 3.6.3 (find the old Android Studio at https://developer.android.com/studio/archive)
Install the Android SDK
Overwrite the installation with the Apple Chip version of Android Studio
I had the same problem with my MacBook air(m1 chip) as you mentioned.
How did I solve it?
Just download the IDE - Intellij IDEA and create a new project, select Android Project and there download Android SDK, now you can install android studio again and the sdk is installed.
I've also had this exact same issue when downloading Android Studio 7.0.3. Here's what helped me.
Download the command line tools, place them in the SDK folder (e.g., on mac: /Users/user/Library/Android/sdk), and then add the bin folder to the PATH.
Install the latest platform: in a terminal, execute ./sdkmanager "platforms;android-31"
Next up execute this command ./sdkmanager --channel=3 emulator (this switches the channel from stable=0 to canary=3 )
Open Android Studio, and go to the SDK Manager (Appearance and Behavior > System Settings > Android SDK)
Click on "Edit", and then select the sdk folder. Then "Next" > "Next" > "Finish".
Now restart Android Studio and everything should work
I had the exact same error as OP. Follow what Art Fedorychak mentioned, it worked for me as well. It seems like the current stable build of the Apple M1 android studio version doesn't actually initialize an SDK if one doesn't already exist, but it seems to be able to update and or / initialize one that does as long as the same folder is being referenced, so we just need to use a working SDK for M1 on the initial run and then revert back to the stable AS
This is what solved it for me:
Download & install IntelliJ IDEA. https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/#section=mac
Open IntelliJ IDEA and create New Android Project
Download sdk success
Open Android Studio & checked it worked
My solution to this problem is simply to put the SDK in another location. For myself, I put the SDK folder to subfolders in Documents. The SDK download will initiate.
I cant open any of my existing projects on android studio for some reason, I can create a new project but any time i try and open an exiting one it opens the file finder i click on the project and nothing happens.
Ive tried invalidating and clearing cache, uninstalling all plugin, deleting, re-downloading and re-installing but nothing seems to be working
Im running macOS Catalina 10.15 and Android Studio 3.4.2

Adding
-Dide.mac.file.chooser.native=false
to .vmoptions helps.
Just to summarise (and make it clear) there are 3 different options to solve this.
From within Android Studio if you can open it...
Click the menu item Help->Edit Custom VM Options...
In the editor studio.vmoptions that opens up, add the following, save and restart Android Studio
-Dide.mac.file.chooser.native=false
Via Mac OS X Terminal window, type
open -a /Applications/Android\ Studio.app "path to your project"
You can get the path to your project by going into the project directory and typing,
pwd
From Mac OS X Finder
locate the folder for the Android Studio project that you want to open.
drag the folder to the Android Studio App (from Applications or from the Dock if it is there)
There is something wrong with androdi studio in macOS Catalina, so you can not open exist project or import project in android studio. But as an alternative, you can open project in command line, like below
$ open -a /Applications/Android\ Studio.app "path to your project"
Drag the project folder and drop on Android studio icon in the dock to open the project. Since its beta we have to wait for a fix from Apple or Jetbrains.
See my answer at,
IntelliJ IDEA can't open projects or add SDK on macOS Catalina, I think it also works for Android studio.
Mac OS, Mojave or Catalina, Exit Android studio first,
Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click Privacy.
Click the lock, then enter your administrator password.
From the list of items on the left, select Full Disk Access.
Add Android studio(or other whatever app having this problem) to the apps allowed full-disk access by using the add button.
Lock and try again.
I hope this will help.
Ref from apple support of other things, but I tried, it works!
Android Studio 3.4.2 is probably not optimized for macOS Catalina. Try downgrading to macOS Mojave. It's what I use and it's working fine.
Stay clear of beta versions - not everyone develops against beta versions.
Might be a late response. This answer is for having issues with 4.x not launching on macOS after upgrade or uninstall and reinstall.
rm -rf ~/Library/Application Support/Google/AndroidStudio{PREVIOUS_VERSION}
Example: rm -rf ~/Library/Application Support/Google/AndroidStudio4.1
https://developer.android.com/studio/known-issues#studio-config-directories
unable to connect to adb.check the event log for a possible issue, verify that localhost entry is pointing to 127.0.0.1 or:: 1 for ipv4 or ipv6
Tried adb kill-server, restart, invalidate restart nothing works.
Same issue reported over here https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/130791561
Note: I have not added any file or anything in studio, it's fresh installed Studio after format a full system still issue is there.
Replace your platform-tools with this one and delete the other one.
https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools_r26.0.0-windows.zip
I was also facing this issue in android Studio 3.4 version, but now I have fixed it , if you are using windows then follow these steps:
Download Platform tools from here
https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools_r26.0.0-windows.zip
Extract downloaded zip file
Go To location "C:\Users\your_computer_user_name\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk" and Delete "Platform tools" folder
Copy and Paste, downloaded platform tool folder to above location
Now Go to your android studio and Rebuild your project Then run.
For Mac Users, follow these simple steps :
Just simply Navigate to Tools > SDK Manager> Android SDK>, then click on the Tab of SDK Tools, then look for Android SDK Platform-tools and update it.
Then the last step, Invalidate cache and restart your IDE, after that, then finally you restart your Mac. (Sometimes it's this step is unnecessary)
It will work out successfully.
Solution for Linux Users.
System info: Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1 , Android Studio 3.4.1
Issue description: Problem with platform tools.
Solution: Remove the folder manually and update SDK tools through Android Studio.
Step 1: Go to your Android SDK installation folder. By default under your home directory. Choose platform-tools and simply delete. (/home//Android/SDK)
Step 2: Open Android Studio and go to SDK Tools. (File -> Settings -> Appearance & Behaviour -> System Settings -> Android SDK -> SDK Tools) By the moment you should be able to see Android SDK Platform Tools line unchecked.
Step 3: Put a check to install Platform Tools and press OK. Notice it'll relocate the folder to the directory where deleted.
Now that you re-installed the platform tools, restart the Android Studio and your deployment targets should show up.
If you don't install the platform tool back and ever try to build or run a project you'll get this IDE error. Just FYI :)
So that's all. Enjoy.
Happy coding
If you use Windows, you might have a corruption in api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll.
Try to update it - you can get the update from Microsoft's website.
You should check it - path/to/sdk/platform-tools and try to run adb.exe
When you update Sdk platform tools(which contains adb.exe) to release 28.0.2 and if you are using windows 8.1 then it needs few updates from windows.
As per SDK Platform tools release notes(https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools):
Updated Windows requirements : The platform tools now depend on the Windows Universal C Runtime, which is usually installed by default via Windows Update. If you see errors mentioning missing DLLs, you may need to manually fetch and install the runtime package."
Windows update url: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows
Prerequisite for Windows update url: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42327
Faced the exact same issue but after updating with prerequisite url first then the other url provided now it is working perfectly fine for me.
It worked for me by selecting -> Use libusb backend
This worked for me on Windows:
Goto cmd write %temp% hit enter -> delete all data from there.
Restart your Computer.
Open Android Studio now, it will work.
Clear all cache memory (related to Android Studio)
Restart ADB manually from Android Studio (first option)
Open Command prompt and got android sdk>platform-tools> adb kill-server
press enter
and again adb start-server
press enter
Restart ADB manually form Android Stidio (second option)
go to your (SDK store path) sdk>platform-tools>adb
press enter
ex. D drive > sdk>platform-tools>adb
Restart your system
Delete the platform-tools folder from the sdk and replacing with the same from your another pc. I am also facing this problem after updating to 3.4. If you face same problem please update to Android Studio 3.5 Canary Channel.
The reason is for ADB server problem. Simply re-run your adb.
(Go to your SDK folder then inside platform-tools folder you can see adb.exe. copy the path location and paste it in your computers system Environment variable. Set a new path there and paste the adb.exe file location there. hope it will solve )
If you are using Genymotion, there is an update that fix the problem.
Genymotion 3.0.2 (April 18th, 2019)
Corrections
We have fixed an
incompatibility with the adb tool bundled in the platform-tools 28.0.2
package of the Android SDK, which caused failures to start virtual
devices.
This new version of adb changed the behavior of the “adb connect
:” command by making the “port” part mandatory. This
broke Genymotion Desktop in a few places where it did not pass the
port. We have adjusted the way we call “adb connect” and also updated
the version we ship with the product to match the one in
platform-tools 28.0.2.
If non of the above answers worked for you (as same happend to me), down grade to the old version of Android Studio by following these steps:
Uninstall current Android Studio
Go to Android Studio Archive and download any older version
After installation, Open the project. You might see an error like this
This version of Android Studio cannot open this project, please retry with Android Studio 3.4 or newer.
Now, open project gradle and update classpath tools.build version. I.e. in my case Android studio version is 3.2 and classpath 3.2.1
Hope it might save someone time.
I faced this issue last night, and I tried these methods to fix:
download older platform-tools and place it in the android sdk folder.(not work for me)
adb kill-server, adb start-server.(not work for me, adb had no response with these cmd)
kill the process that occupies port 5037.(for me, there is no other .exe run at this port)
reinstall platform-tools in Android Studio.(not work)
download ADB Kits and replace them in platform-tools folder.(work!!!)
It seems that my adb file has been modified or replaced by some programs. You can try these methods, and I hope some of them can work for you.
I had this issue only after a Genymotion update, on Mac.
What worked for me: Open Genymotion preferences, Select ADB, choose "Use custom Android SDK tools" and points to your Android SDK folder.
Actually the problem is not with the android studio version 3.4
Problem is with the android platform tools version which is latest one 29.
So install the previous version of the android platform tools version it will solve your problem. as above #Ved mentioned.
Ved link:
https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools_r26.0.0-windows.zip
EndTask adb.exe from Background processes (TaskManager) and Run Application again.
It works for me
After installing the Android studio and launching it I am getting this error.
I cannot specify the path to the SDK. I have tried giving the path as :C:\Development\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools\" but the path is invalid
Try this:
close this box then
Tools -> Android -> SDK Manager
I encountered this problem when installing Android Studio 3.0.
There was in fact no folder named C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk after I installed Android Studio. I tried installing the Android command line tools at this location, but android studio did not accept this. (Turns out, the command line tools are not the SDK.)
Managed to fix it by doing a complete uninstall of Android Studio, deleting the C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Android folder, deleting any Android Studio settings folders (in my case C:\Users\Your Name\.AndroidStudio2.3 and C:\Users\Your Name\.AndroidStudio2.3). After reinstalling and opening Android Studio, it gave me a dialog to download the SDK.
I can think of 2 possible explanations why this worked for me:
Originally, Android Studio was opening a project straight away, which didn't trigger the "download your sdk" dialog. (This no longer occurred since I deleted my Android Studio settings.)
There was some kind of setting that made Android Studio think I already had the SDK downloaded.
Try this - C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk
Replace Your Name with the name of your PC.
This problem is usual after you update, or reinstall the Android Studio.. Follow these steps-
* Close all the opened project which is opened by default after you started the Android Studio.. and again open the Android Studio, it will direct you towards re-downloading of SDK components from the net (So be sure to have net connectivity at this point)..
* If above step doesn't work, then restart the PC and open Android Studio again..
Hope it will help..
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk
Hope this will work.
I was also stuck with this...i tried everything mentioned above, but could not get through.
Then I was about to uninstall and reinstall the IDE as mentioned above.
When I was about to uninstall, to my surprise, I found Android SDK Tools in control Panel -> Programs and Features, which was the thing I was looking for!
Android SDK Tools in Control Panel -> Programs and features
I didn't know how to find the path of that, because even after searching in my computer, I didn't get it. So, I went on further and clicked on uninstall.
There, I found the path of Android SDK Tools "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\". I did not uninstall anything.
I linked this path in the dialogue box, the error was gone!
Whoever encounters the same error, should look for the "Android SDK Tools" in the programs and features in control panel, and then go for uninstalling the same.
There you will find the path of the tools folder.
Copy and paste that path, and you shall get through.
When installing Android Studio on my Mac I accidentally cancelled the dialog box that would normally have installed the SDK. To fix this I deleted Android Studio from /Applications, and deleted the following folders:
% cd $HOME
% rm -rf Preferences/AndroidStudio3.4
% rm -rf Logs/AndroidStudio3.4
% rm -rf Caches/AndroidStudio3.4
% rm -rf Application\ Support/AndroidStudio3.4
(Adjust the version number for your version.) I then reinstalled Android Studio and let it guide me through the SDK installation process.
In case anyone get to experience the same weird situation as me:
I had installed Android Studio, had projects saved, but for some reason I had to do reinstall Windows (and during that I deleted my "Android-folder" in ".../local". When you do that, you will encounter the exact same pop up.
No worries, close it and even though it says that it is needed, it's not. You just don't have access to the prior projects. When saving the new one, then everything will be OK.
The problem was solved by downloading the SDK again, in my case I had deleted the SDK folder that was in C:\Users\george\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk, because I deleted it then I had to download the SDK
I just reinstalled Android Studio (everything) C:/user/yourName/.androidStudio.4 and C:/user/yourName/.androidStudio.4.
You dont have to delete your projects folder!
In my case, going to the Settings menu in Android Studio, there I could download the SDK (none were installed) through the "edit" button
I got this error when moving a project from one computer to antother, even though it wasn't an Android project and didn't need an Android SDK.
The solution for me was to open the file local.properties and remove the line that says sdk.dir. Hope this can help someone.
All you need to do is close the project opened in android studio. This error occurs when you reinstall Android Studio. The previous project that you have been working on will be opened by default. Select that folder from file explorer and move into different location and then again launch Android Studio. The SDK installation will begin thereafter.
The Reason that why Android Studio can't install/find SDK automatically:
As I tried many times for reinstalling Android Studio, but each time I faced with this SDK popup. I figured out that after installing, Android Studio seeks for project folder automatically (usually located in C:\Users\Username\AppData\AndroidStudioProject) to syn previous settings, gradle, SDK path, Android Studio Settings etc. When I deleted this folder (if you need your previous projects copy it somewhere for latter replacement) the usual installation has been started after clicking on install.
I just encountered this issue when updating my Android Studio after a couple of years of not using it, and the solution ended up very easy:
I exited the window with the SDK prompt and closed the old project it was trying to open. Once the project was closed, the IDE was able to prompt me with the download window, and there SDK download worked!
I was running Droidio (Android Studio) 0.6.1; from there I was not able to update to the newest version (a quantum leap to 0.8); I had to download it separately and install from Windows Explorer. But now the installation process is looking for old settings:
Where it seems to want to take me is here (to the Android folder, I reckon); this is what I see when I mash the "compressed ellipsis" (one dot) button:
...but I'm not sure that is really the right spot; Is it [not]? What is the precise name of the settings file I should be seeking?
UPDATE
I followed Gabriele's directive, and then I got this:
I chose "Use Android Studio's SDK"
And then I got this when trying to rebuild my project, "Error:Execution failed for task ':app:preBuild'. failed to find target android-19 : C:\Users\clay\AppData\Local\Android\android-studio1\sdk"
UPDATE 2
I then opened the SDK Manager and installed what was missing/out of date, and tried to build again.
I got the error, "Failed to refresh Gradle project 'Platypus' Error: Cause: failed to find target android-19: C:\users\clay\AppData\Local\Android\android-studio1\sdk Install missing platform and sync project
The "Install missing platform and sync project" part of the message is a link. I clicked it, accepted the License Agreement.
Once that finished, the build failed again with a similar message: "...failed to find Build Tools revision 19.1.0 Install Build Tools 19.1.0 and sync project"
Again, the "install..." jazz was a link; I clicked it, accepted, and installed...
The next problem child was, "Error:The project is using an unsupported version of the Android Gradle plug-in (0.11.2) Fix plug-in version and re-import project"
Acquiescing to the counsel of the wise old man in "Never Cry Wolf," I endeavored to persevere by clicking "Fix plug-in version and re-import project"
At which point I finally got a successful build.
UPDATE 3
I then ran the project, and it seemed to be running (it said so, and the red square was visible), but no emulator ever appeared.
I opened the AVD Manager, and the device had a warning icon (repairable). I clicked the "Repair" button; it seemed to work - the warning icon disappeared.
But then I got this:
It still won't display an emulator when I Run > Debug App...
It used to be (with Droidio 0.5* to 0.61) that the first time I ran, I would see this:
...and the Emulator would eventually come up; subsequent runs of the app, the Device would be listed at the top (under "Choose a Running Device") - no more, though - it is only at the bottom as shown in the scream shot above, even on subsequent runs of the app...
I reckon I should try "re-creating the AVD's weird, malformed config.ini" but don't savvy just what steps to take to accomplish that.

I used a method to trick the Android Studio to import settings from previous one without exporting the settings and it worked.
Just go to your previous .AndroidStudio\config folder, copy and paste them all to the new one (in my scenario I updated from 1.1 to 1.2 beta) .AndroidStudioPreview1.2
(For preventing any failure, please make a Rar file of your original config,
also, after it works, export it so you can import it if you need it)
Starting with Android Studio 0.8.0 (Beta) its now
/home/{username}/.AndroidStudioBeta
for a *nix environment
UPDATE:
Since Android Studio is now out of beta the settings can now be found in:
/home/{username}/.AndroidStudio
On mac Sierra, Android studio 2.3
/Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/AndroidStudio2.3/
On my Mac, using Android Studio 2.1, the directory is
~/Library/Preferences/AndroidStudio2.1/
that is, not a hidden dir.
For Linux and Android Studio 4.2+, the location is:
/home/[username]/.config/Google/AndroidStudio4.1
assuming you are upgrading from version 4.1.
Contrary to JetBrains' documentation, but according to Configure Android Studio, the configuration is currently under a "Google" folder:
Windows: %APPDATA%\Google\<product><version>
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/<product><version>
Linux: ~/.config/Google/<product><version>
That's where I found them (the Mac variant).
And in a *nix environment, this will probably be located at /home/[username]/.AndroidStudioPreview
for Android Studio 4.2, Google has moved it to %appdata%\Roaming\Google\AndroidStudioPreview4.2
There is a single point of reference for the location of the settings folder for all Jetbrains IDE's for all OS's:
https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/206544519-Directories-used-by-the-IDE-to-store-settings-caches-plugins-and-logs
2020.1 and above versions
2019.3.x and below versions
To migrate the settings look for the folder listed under Configuration directory
