Splashscreen not getting displayed - android

I have an Android Application where I want to display a Splash Screen for 6 seconds but the Splash Screen doesn't show up on opening the app, instead the screen which was previously my start-page shows up.
Here is the splashscreen.java file:
import android.content.Intent;
import android.support.v7.app.AppCompatActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.view.MenuItem;
import android.os.Handler;
public class splashscreen extends AppCompatActivity {
private static int SPLASH_TIME_OUT = 6000;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_splashscreen);
new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable() {
// Using handler with postDelayed called runnable run method
#Override
public void run() {
Intent i = new Intent(splashscreen.this, LoginActivity.class);
startActivity(i);
// close this activity
//finish();
}
}, 6*1000);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu_splashscreen, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle action bar item clicks here. The action bar will
// automatically handle clicks on the Home/Up button, so long
// as you specify a parent activity in AndroidManifest.xml.
int id = item.getItemId();
//noinspection SimplifiableIfStatement
if (id == R.id.action_settings) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}
Here is my manifest file-
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Please help...

First Clean Your project,
Build -> Clean Project
and Run Again. It will work.

Hi and Try this code :
SplashScreen.java
public class splashscreen extends AppCompatActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate( Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.splashscreen);
Thread timerThread = new Thread(){
public void run(){
try{
sleep(6000);
}catch(InterruptedException e){
e.printStackTrace();
}finally{
Intent intent = new Intent(splashscreen.this,MainActivity.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
}
};
timerThread.start();
}
#Override
protected void onPause() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
super.onPause();
finish();
}
}
SplashScreen.xml
,
<ImageView
android:src="#drawable/mobilewallpapers"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
AndroidManifest
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#mipmap/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:supportsRtl="true"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme">
<activity android:name=".MainActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity android:name=".splashscreen">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN">
</action>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER">
</category>
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
hope it works ;)

Android Splash activity not redirecting

I have created a splash activity for my app. I am trying to redirect from my Splash activity to the Starting Point activity using AndroidManifest.xml but its not working. The Splash class loads up, and then it doesn't redirect to the Starting Point. And it doesn't give any errors either.
So can you please help me figure it out.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.myapp"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0" >
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="8"
android:targetSdkVersion="19" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.myapp.Splash"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.example.myapp.StartingPoint"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="com.example.myapp.STARTINGPOINT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>
Now I have also tried
<activity
android:name=".Splash"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name=".StartingPoint"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="com.example.myapp.STARTINGPOINT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
So what can I do here. I am not getting redirected from Splash to my Starting Point.
Splash Code
package com.example.myapp;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
public class Splash extends Activity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.splash);
}
}
Add this code to your Splash.java
Thread timer = new Thread(){
public void run(){
try {
sleep(2000);
} catch (Exception e) {
// TODO: handle exception
} finally{
Intent i = new Intent(Flash_Activity.this, StartingPoint.class);
startActivity(i);
}
}
};
timer.start();
}
You are never calling anything to change the activity from your splash to the starting point. This thread will do that.
Use this easy way to redirect to acitvity
new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
Intent intent = new Intent(this,MainActivity.class);
startActivity(intent);
finish();
}
},2500);

Android App stops when button clicked

I am trying to write an app that has 4 menu buttons on the main screen. On clicking this each menu button, a new screen should appear. At the moment I have only written code to cater for the first button to be clicked, but it the app crashes/stops.
I think the problem is that I don't have the activity of TheCompany declared in the Android Manifest file, but I don't know how I would do that.
I am writing the app in Eclipse and so far I have the following files/sets of code:
MainActivity.Java:
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
public final static String EXTRA_MESSAGE = "com.example.myfirstapp.MESSAGE";
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
View button = findViewById(R.id.TheCompany);
button.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener(){
public void onClick (View v){
startIntent();
}
});
//getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
// If your minSdkVersion is 11 or higher, instead use:
// getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu items for use in the action bar
MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
inflater.inflate(R.menu.main_activity_actions, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
/** Called when the user clicks the Company button */
private void startIntent() {
// Do something in response to button
Intent intent = new Intent(this, TheCompany.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
}
The Activity_main.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:padding="10dp" >
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<Button
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="The Company"
android:id="#+id/TheCompany"/>
<Button
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Services"/>
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<Button
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Contacts" />
<Button
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Structure" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
Then I have the TheCompany Java file:
public class TheCompany extends Activity
{
public void onCreate(Bundle icicle)
{
super.onCreate(icicle);
setContentView(R.layout.company);
}
}
The Android.Manifest looks like:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.myfirstapp"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0" >
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="8"
android:targetSdkVersion="19" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:icon="#drawable/logo"
android:name="com.example.myfirstapp.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.example.myfirstapp.DisplayMessageActivity"
android:label="#string/title_activity_display_message"
android:parentActivityName="com.example.myfirstapp.MainActivity" >
<meta-data
android:name="android.support.PARENT_ACTIVITY"
android:value="com.example.myfirstapp.MainActivity" />
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>
Simply add this in your Manifest "application" tag :
<activity
android:name="com.example.myfirstapp.TheCompany"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
</activity>
You need to declare each activity in the manifest file.
The result is this :
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.myfirstapp"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0" >
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="8"
android:targetSdkVersion="19" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:icon="#drawable/logo"
android:name="com.example.myfirstapp.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.example.myfirstapp.TheCompany"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.example.myfirstapp.DisplayMessageActivity"
android:label="#string/title_activity_display_message"
android:parentActivityName="com.example.myfirstapp.MainActivity" >
<meta-data
android:name="android.support.PARENT_ACTIVITY"
android:value="com.example.myfirstapp.MainActivity" />
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>
you did`t create any id like "TheCompany" in activity_main.xml, you have to declare id for button and then get the id using findViewById(...);
View button = findViewById(R.id.button1);

Moving from one activity to another Activity in Android

I want to move from one activity to another (using virtual device). When I click on button to move, My emulator ones a dialog box showing unfortunately SMS1 has stopped working (SMS1 is my app name).
Can anybody help me in correcting my code?
MainActivity.java:
package com.example.sms1;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.TextView;
public class MainActivity extends Activity implements OnClickListener
{
Button b1;
TextView tv1;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
b1 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button1);
tv1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1);
b1.setOnClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu)
{
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public void onClick(View v)
{
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Intent i = new Intent(getApplicationContext(),NextActivity.class);
startActivity(i);
setContentView(R.layout.avtivity_next);
}
}
Here is the NextActivity
package com.example.sms1;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.widget.TextView;
public class NextActivity extends Activity {
TextView tv1;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.avtivity_next);
tv1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
}
Manifest.XML
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.sms1"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0" >
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="8"
android:targetSdkVersion="17" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.sms1.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>
NextActivityLayout
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context=".NextActivity" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="next activity" />
</RelativeLayout>
MainActivity Layout
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context=".MainActivity" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/hello_world" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/button1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_marginTop="80dp"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/textView1"
android:text="Button" />
</RelativeLayout>
First You have to use this code in MainActivity.java class
#Override
public void onClick(View v)
{
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Intent i = new Intent(getApplicationContext(),NextActivity.class);
startActivity(i);
}
You can pass intent this way.
Second
add proper entry into manifest.xml file.
<activity android:name=".NextActivity" />
Now see what happens.
You haven't defined NextActivity in the AndroidManifest.xml file.
Add these lines in android manifest after</activity> tag. It should work.
<activity
android:name=".NextActivity" >
</activity>
final code will be
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/app_icon"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<activity
android:name=".MainActivity"
android:label="Main Activity" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name=".NextActivity" >
</activity>
</application>
button1 in activity2
code written in activity 2
button1.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v)
{
// starting background task to update product
Intent fp=new Intent(getApplicationContext(),activity1.class);
startActivity(fp);
}
});
This might help
Simply add your NextActivity in the Manifest.XML file
<activity
android:name="com.example.sms1.NextActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
public void onClick(View v)
{
startActivity(new Intent(getApplicationContext(), Next.class));
}
it is direct way to move second activity and there is no need for call intent
#Override
public void onClick(View v)
{
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Intent intent = new Intent(Activity1.this,Activity2.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
1) place setContentView(R.layout.avtivity_next); to the next-activity's onCreate() method just like this (main) activity's onCreate()
2) if you have not defined the next-activity in your-apps manifest file then do this also, like:
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/app_icon"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<activity
android:name=".MainActivity"
android:label="Main Activity" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name=".NextActivity"
android:label="Next Activity" >
</activity>
</application>
You must have to perform the 2nd step every time you create a new activity, otherwise your app will crash
When you have to go from one page to another page in android changes made in 2 files
Intent intentSignUP = new Intent(this,SignUpActivity.class);
startActivity(intentSignUP);
add activity in androidManifest file also like
<activity android:name=".SignUpActivity"></activity>
setContentView(R.layout.avtivity_next);
I think this line of code should be moved to the next activity...
Below code is working fine with Android 4.3:
Intent i = new Intent(this,MainActivity2.class);
startActivity(i);
First you have to declare the activity in Manifest. It is important. You can add this inside application like this.
It is mainly due to unregistered activity in manifest file as "NextActivity"
Firstly register NextActivity in Manifest like
<activity android:name=".NextActivity">
then use the code in the where you want
Intent intent=new Intent(MainActivity.this,NextActivity.class);
startActivity(intent);
where you have to call the NextActivity..
Register your java class on Android manifest file
After that write this code on button click
startActivity(new intent(MainActivity.this,NextActivity.class));
You can do
Intent i = new Intent(classname.this , targetclass.class);
startActivity(i);

Newbie in android programming, xml and class file not working

I have a problem I have created a simple list items and my item is Entertainment I have created the XML and Java file but after running into an emulator it doesn't work. I mean list items work, entertainment is here but clicking it won't make it to the next. Help
This is the main activity file:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".Main" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/listView1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" >
</ListView>
</RelativeLayout>
This is the Java file:
package com.firstapp;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.media.MediaPlayer;
import android.net.Uri;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
import android.widget.VideoView;
public class Entertainment extends Activity {
MediaPlayer ourSong;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.entertainment);
ourSong = MediaPlayer.create(this, R.id.videoView1);
ourSong.start();
Thread timer = new Thread() {
public void run() {
try {
sleep(5000);
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} finally {
Intent openStartingpoint = new Intent(
"com.bucky.android.Menu");
startActivity(openStartingpoint);
}
}
};
timer.start();
}
#Override
protected void onPause() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
super.onPause();
ourSong.release();
finish();
}
}
And this is the manifest
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="9"
android:targetSdkVersion="16" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.firstapp.Main"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.firstapp.Entertainment"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.Main" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
In the Manifest, the tag "category" in your main activity intent is wrong:
<activity
android:name="com.firstapp.Main"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
You have to declare LAUNCHER instead of DEFAULT. See if it works after this change.
you have to override itemclick method of your listview for that
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1, int arg2, long arg3) {
int position = arg2;
// click event handling
textQuestionCount.setText("Question " + String.valueOf(position + 1) + " of " + arg0.getCount());
}
and also implement the interface OnItemClickListener in your class.

Application force closes when button is pressed

I've just began on a new application and I added a button which in the past I've had no problem with but for some reason Its not working now. I'm just simply trying to teacher that button to another page. What do you think the problem is? (just ignore the spinners I haven't set those up yet)
TextingprojectActivity
public class TextingprojectActivity extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
Button tut1 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.tutorial1);
tut1.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
startActivity(new Intent("practice.practice.TUTORIALONE "));
}
});
}
}
Tutorial1 Java
public class TutorialOne extends Activity
{
#Override
