I updated my android studio to the new version 2.3 and was asked to convert my project to match the new formats which I did. I was asked to update the gradle version too and I did. Now one eternity later it's still refreshing my project gradle. I've restarted it several times and I have active internet connection. Any suggestions
This method works for Me :
Change Gradle Home Path as C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\gradle-3.2
To Open Gradle Home Setting :
Settings->Build,Execution,Deployment->Gradle->Gradle Home
It depends sometimes on what are you building. As Hamid said, it´s a must do working Offline, it greatly reduces times, or at least it did not that long ago.
Also checkout that you are not building google APIs that you are not using, be careful with google's play-services or maps, they sometimes take a bunch of time and maybe you are not using them.
If that's an option, install Android Studio in a SSD, don't buy one, but if you have it, consider moving it, it reduced my gradle about 90%.
Also, check this, a bit old, but may help.
Could be caused by Microsoft Defender.
Check if msmpeng.exe is running in task manager
and exclude Android directory.
using default gradle wrapper and disconnecting from my corporate network to a 4G network solved my problem
File> Settings> Build, Execution, Deployment> Gradle> and check the Offline work
If you have an failed for sync gradle. Such as; Gradle sync failed: Minimum supported Gradle version is 3.3. Current version is 3.2.
Download Gradle supported version manually.
Uncheck "Use default gradle wrapper (recommended)"
Check "Use local gradle distribution" and set Gradle home path.
Check offline work.
Updating the gradle path in
File > Settings > Build, Execution, Deployment > Gradle
worked for me. The problem occured after updating Android Studio.
In android studio when we build the project there are two options for building the project in:
settings->build Tools->Gradle->Project-level settings
The first option is "Use default gradle wrapper" and the second option is "Use local gradle distribution"
My question is which option is faster and when will it be used?
You can read about Gradle Wrapper in the official user guide.
The main thing about the wrapper - it cares about the Gradle version used to build your project. So, if one has configured the project to use a wrapper, then everyone will build it with the same version of Gradle. The version of Gradle could be specified in the configuration file called gradle-wrapper.properties.
One more important thing is that Gradle distribution will be included in your project and if someone will try to build it, no local Gradle installation will be needed.
But if you choose use local gradle distribution, then your project will be built with the version of Gradle you have currently installed and it doesn't guarantees, that your project will be built correctly, since Gradle version may differ.
I don't think, that time is different for this two cases, but wrapper usage seems to be preferable. Sure, in this case, you have to store wrapper distribution in your version control system, but you can set build tool version exactly used to build your project and make no one install Gradle manually if he doesn't have Gradle installed yet.
I want to add a very important point to the Stanislav's answer. Gradle could be used not only for building your project from Android Studio, but also the from command line. This is especially important if you want to build it in CI environment. In that case, you don't need to care about specific gradle version on your server. The project will be built with the same version for both IDE and CI and this will make your build stable and predictable.
I have just upgraded (i.e., installed a full new version) my Android Studio from 1.5 to 2.0. The upgrade seemed to go smoothly, but I am having trouble with my project when I open it, when Gradle is syncing my project.
After Gradle sync runs for a couple of minutes I get this error:
Failed to sync Gradle project MyProject
Unknown host 'jcenter.bintray.com'. You may need to adjust the proxy settings in Gradle.
Error: Enable Gradle "offline mode' and sync project
Learn about configuring HTTP proxies in Gradle
So, I click on the link that says:
Enable Gradle "offline mode' and sync project
Then Gradle spins for a second or two, and I now have this message:
Failed to sync Gradle project MyProject
Error: No cached version of com.android.tools.build:gradle:1.3.0 available for offline mode.
Disable Gradle 'offline mode' and sync project
So, I click on this link:
Disable Gradle 'offline mode' and sync project
And I am back to my first error again.
The machine I am working on is 100% off line. It does not have, nor will it ever have any kind of network connection whatsoever. I figure I need to disable some kind of check that requires the internet, but I am not sure what. Is this fixable, or do I have to downgrade back to Android Studio 1.5?
UPDATE
I am also getting this error message:
Gradle sync failed: Unknown host 'services.gradle.org'. You may need to adjust the proxy settings in Gradle.
Ok, I fixed my issue so I wanted to post how I did it in case somebody else runs into this situation.
I was googling around and found a statement regarding working offline with Android Studio that read:
You can, however you won't be able to use any Gradle dependency. Gradle search into the repositories for dependencies using internet, so if you're completely unable to work online. Try not to include anything in the Gradle files, if you do, you'll have to sync it and it'll fail. Bascially just don't touch Gradle files and you'll be good to go.
So, I looked at my gradle files, specifically the build.gradle for the Project (not for the Module). Once there, I noticed a line:
dependencies {
classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:1.3.0'
}
So, I replaced 1.3.0 with 2.0.0 and the project built just fine.
I hope this helps somebody else in the future. Good luck.
I got same problem when I downloaded "BackboneExampleApp" source code from guithub Click Here For Code. I have done following process by watching settings of my old projects and found these errors. I resolved both errors, run my app and got errors to upgrade project and finally when I updated then no more problems exist. Just see pictures for help.
build.gradle (Project:BackboneExampleApp-master)-->
dependencies {
classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:2.3.1'
}
I also come with the same problem in my application. I have Done invalidate caches/restart then the problem is resolved.
I had the same problem as yours. Fortunately, I managed to solve it. You need to go to File >> Settings >> Build, Execution, Deployment >> Build Tools >> Gradle. You need to change the Gradle Home. Mine was "C:/Program Files/Android/Android Studio/gradle/gradle-2.08" and it said the path is invalid. So, just recheck your path in your file explorer and change it. I changed mine to "C:/Program Files/Android/Android Studio/gradle/gradle-2.10".
I had a similar problem. I was trying to build one of the media samples. I tried to use gradle 2.0.0 as you suggested but it didn't work. Got me on the right track though. gradle 2.1.0, along with deactivating offline mode got it to work.
For me it was a connection issue, that I have checked my connection is working in the same second I have enabled and disabled offline Gradle, then Android Studio download the needed files
NB: My Connection was disconnecting and reconnecting many times, so i figured out that this error was caused by the connection specially it was not the same time it takes when trying to sync my Gradle
For those have issues with error message: Learn to configure HTTP settings, below is the solution that worked for me. Am using Android studio 2.3.3:
Go to http://developer.android.com/studio/intro/studio-config.html
Step 1: Follow the instructions on: Set up Android studio proxy.
Step 2: Follow the instructions on : Android plugin for gradle HTTP proxy setting. You will see proxy settings under : # project wide gradle settings, copy the code there and paste it into the empty space in gradle properties file which is under the build gradle in Android studio. Make sure you are connected to internet while on this process. Wait until the the error disappears.
Step 3: you may see another message pop up stating: some folders may have been missing syn now. Just click on syn now.
I hope this help, thanks all.
I was fallen the same trouble, you mentioned. But I solved it myself. I connected my pc to the internet and rebulit the project using PROJECT>>REBUILT PROJECT.
Then some downloads could be seen below with the name of jcenter.......
THEN THE PROBLEM SOLVED...😃
Gradle build became successful..
I faced the same issue. Make sure that you have made an entry in path in environment variable for gradle
C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\gradle-3.2\bin
After disable offline mode and setting the path in environment variables, the issue was fixed and Gradle was build cleanly.
It seems there are multiple reasons for this issue. I fixed it by changing the "Gradle version" and "Android plugin version".
It might be helpful to someone. Go to File->Project Structure. Select Project and update your gradle and android plugin versions.
I also came with the same problem in my application..The application Gradle version is 2.3.3 .I just update the Gradle to 3.0.1 .and the problem is solved.
My problem was different from all answers; gradle distribution url was wrong..
It might be the problem that distributionUrl can be wrong in gradle-wrapper.properties file.
After a successful import of an Eclipse-Android-Project into "Android Studio 1.4", I get the error
"Please select Android SDK"
when I click on the button to run the application in the simulator, I can't find any way of doing that.
This dialog opens when I click on "run":
This is the "project structure" dialog:
What should I do now?
I go to build.gradle and click sync now. Then it worked.
Update :
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android Studio 3.1.1)
Tools -> Android -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android Studio 3.0.1)
Or You can click on the icon from the toolbar.
This answer may not help works for later version as Android studio Team work on making the tool more better, the way to sync may be different in the next version of Android Studio.
COMMON WAY that may helps is try to sync project and then Invalidate Caches and Restart Android Studio.
Solution for Android Studio 3.1.2 [See below answer]
See Latest Android Studio version
FIX FOR 3.1.2 OR NEWER VERSIONS
Some of my colleagues and I have faced the same issue on AS 3.1.2, but a simple Sync didn't help us. For us, the solution was a bit different:
File -> Invalidate Caches -> Invalidate
File -> Close Project.
Remove the project from the AS project selector window.
Quit from Android Studio
Start AS and open project again
EXTRA ADVICE IF YOU ARE FACING THIS ISSUE CONSTANTLY
Some of you are constantly facing this issue, and this "solution" fixes it only temporarily. At the time we started getting this error, we used gradle wrapper 4.6 and Android gradle plugin 3.1.0, but since then we went back to gradle 4.4 and we use it with the latest Android gradle plugin, and we haven't seen this issue since then.
In Android Studio 3 and above, for Windows, Mac and Linux:
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files
Solved!
Or you can do this by shortcut key:
Press ⌘ + Shift + A (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift + A (Windows, Linux). Then pop-up a Edit-Text and write "Sync Project with Gradle Files". Then press double click on the option.
Your problem is solved! It'll sync your gradle file with your project file.
Screenshot:
Click this icon to sync gradle
or edit any of your module gradle and then sync
Press "Ctrl+shift+A" and in the pop-up EditText, write "Sync Project with Gradle Files". After that double click on the appeared option. It will then sync your Gradle file SDK with the project file.
Just go to the (app level) build.gradle file, give an empty space somewhere and click on sync, once gradle shows sync complete then the Error will be gone
This is the easiest way to fix this issue:
Add a comment line to the gradle file
It will then ask you to Sync.
Click 'Sync Now'
Viola! You're done.
Now on Android Studio 3 and above, you can try to sync project with gradle like:
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files
The menu structure and options have changed slightly as of Android 3.2.0. I fixed this error by changing the Module SDK in the following menu:
File > Project Structure > Modules > App File > Dependencies Tab > Module SDK
Make sure to hit Apply to save your changes.
The comment from #Nisarg helped: "set latest version in Compile Sdk Version"
I changed from API 8 to API 23 and the error message disappeared.
Press the first refresh button on the gradle vertical tab in Android Studio on the right
Press " ⌘ + Shift + A" on Mac (or "Ctrl+Shift+A" on Windows) and in the pop-up EditText, write "Sync Project with Gradle Files". After that double click on the appeared option. It will then sync your Gradle file SDK with the project file.
Follow these steps:
Goto Android Studio Settings
Search for "Android SDK" using search bar
Ensure the path to your android sdk folder is correct.
After that also ensure the path is automatically updated after a prompt in your project (local.properties) file. If not, do it manually.
Hope this helps.
There are multiple hit & trial solutions for this error. One of them will surely work for you.
Below are the solutions:
1.
Tools -> Android -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android Studio
3.0.1)
Go to build.gradle and click sync now
Click hammer(Build) icon to sync Gradle
or edit any of your module Gradle and then sync
File -> Settings -> Android SDK -> Android SDK Location Edit ->
Android SDK
Open build.gradle file, just add a space or press enter. Then sync
project.
File -> Invalidate Caches / Restart
Go to File >> ProjectStructure(⌘;). This would open this window then select the app module. Then choose the Compile SDK version . Choose the latest one and click apply.
I was having this problem on all versions of AS 3.0+. Syncing with gradle did not solve the problem for me. The solution from András Klöczl was the only thing that would allow me to get some coding done. The problem was, anytime I had to do a gradle sync, the problem came back. So I had to go through that process any time I wanted to make a change in my build.gradle. What ended up working for me was to downgrade my kotlin version from 1.2.40 to 1.2.30
My problem was that if I changed the project (for example opened new window of Android Studio with different project) this error happened.
So I read every answer in this question and the "clear caches and open the project again" solution wasn't so useful in my case.
Instead I discovered that if the Kotlin's plugin's version in Android Studio was lower than in gradle file, the problem appeared.
My setup was:
Android Studio 3.1.3
Kotlin plugin (in Android Studio) 1.2.30
Kotlin version in gradle file 1.2.51
What fixed the problem?
I updated the Kotlin plugin:
File -> Settings -> Plugins -> Install JetBrains plugin...
Then search for Kotlin and click Update. After update just restart the Android Studio and sync Gradle.
Just change build tools version to 25.0.3.. and sync now
I hope it will help..
This worked for me.
File -> Settings -> Android SDK -> Android SDK Location Edit -> Android SDK
Go to : File > Project Structure > Modules -> app > Properties
please choose : Compile 'SDK' version = API26 Build Tools
Version = 27.0.0 Source Compatibility = 1.8 Target Compatibility =
1.8
open build.gradle file. just add a space or press enter. then sync project. it works...
Sometimes android studio just acts stupid and needs some kind of reset..
Go to settings.gradle file it should contain include ':app'
change it to include ':ap' and sync.
after sync, change it to include ':app' again.
It should be working OK now.
The simplest solution for this problem:
First make sure your sdk path is currect.
Then
Please close current project and in android startup menu click on import project and choose your project from explorer.
This will always solve my problem
In my case there there is no selected java sdk version in project structure-
I had to select the -
1.Source Compatibility (1.7)
2.Target Compatibility (1.7)
as shown in image.
If you are using 'Profile or Debug APK...', then you might come across this error.
My solution is to first check SDK for updates in SDK manager: click on "Edit" at the right side of SDK location and go through to install any updates:
Then I clicked on "Logcat" at bottom of Android Studio and find out I also need to configure Android SDK, so choose latest Android API Platform:
After that, I'm able to run the APK in Emulator.
In latest android studio 3.3.2 the icon of sync project with Gradle Files is changed
Now try this
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android Studio 3.3.2)
For Android Studio 3.5, "File -> Sync project with gradle files" is enough.
Go to gradle.build file and click sync now
OR
click icon on Sync project with Gradle file
OR
Go to Tools-> Android -> Sync project with Gradle file
If your android SDK path is given and still you facing this issue then it might because your android studio not synced well, even you have clicked on "Sync now" link.
So for re sync it go to app gradle file and make any change or just give a space and now sync again. It will work perfectly.
In my case I downloaded a git repository for an android project. The project required minimum sdk version 21 and target sdk version 27. When I tried to run the project it gave me "Please select Android SDK error". I checked that I had already downloaded the required sdk files.
For me the solution was to "sync project with Gradle Files"
I was working on a project, and then I got a prompt to update Android Studio. After I did that, I started getting this error when trying to run my app
It says
The project may need to be synced with Gradle files
How do I solve this?
EDIT
Starting with Android Studio 3.1, you should go to:
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files
OLD
Clicking the button 'Sync Project With Gradle Files' should do the trick:
Tools -> Android -> Sync Project with Gradle Files
If that fails, try running 'Rebuild project':
Build -> Rebuild Project
Old Answer
When trying to run the application, instead of selecting the directory highlighted here in blue
I selected the subdirectory instead
and clicked "run".All the issues with Gradle are automatically resolved and the missing apk directory is automatically created.
New Solution
The Sync project with gradle files button disappeared from Android Studio for a while. Its back and you can find it here:
hit the button and wait for the task to complete
I've had this problem after installing the genymotion (another android amulator) plugin.
A closer inspection reveled that gradle needs SDK tools version 19.1.0 in order to run (I had 19.0.3 previously).
To fix it, I had to edit build.gradle and under android I changed to: buildToolsVersion 19.1.0
Then I had to rebuild again, and the error was gone.
Keys combination:
Ctrl + F5
Syncs the project with Gradle files.
The gradle versions in android studio and your code is not the same. This is why even after you update the gradle version on android studio, the error still persist.
So, edit the Gradle distribution reference in the gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties file:
distributionUrl = https\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-5.4.1-all.zip
Ref: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/gradle-plugin.html#updating-gradle
I am using Android Studio 4 developing a Fluter/Dart application. There does not seem to be a Sync project with gradle button or file menu item, there is no clean or rebuild either.
I fixed the problem by removing the .idea folder. The suggestion included removing .gradle as well, but it did not exist.
i had this problem yesterday. can you folow the local path in windows explorer?
(C:\users\..\AndroidStudioProjects\SharedPreferencesDemoProject\SharedPreferencesDemo\build\apk\)
i had to manually create the 'apk' directory in '\build', then the problem was fixed
