How to replace apps dock icon in android - android

I want to replace my icon in apps dock when after installing my developed app. That means when I install my app (dialer), it shows on apps dock by replacing an existing one (stock dialer).

There are many home screen implementations for Android. Not all of them have such a dock. There is no standard API for asking a home screen to replace something in a dock.
You are welcome to contact the developers of various home screens and see if they offer some API to allow you to replace an icon in their dock.

This is not possible for several reasons.
First, the dock is basically a small drawer. The user can put an icon there themselves and the default one is specified by the launcher app.
Secondly, there is no common interface to ask the current launcher to add an icon to the dock. Many launchers do not have a dock at all! :-(
So, you should just let the user decide whether they want to have your app on the dock :-) Alternatively, you can write your own launcher which will put your app in the dock by default! :-D

Launcher or an App for Restricted Access which one is better?

Hi I am planning to create an android app which is similar to the
Samsung Kids Mode- parental control
If you can see the link I gave, it is obvious that the app overrides the Home button when inside the app... I wanted to create a similar app for friends mode and stranger mode and should not come out of the app when home button is pressed... is it possible without root access?? My ultimate aim is to not come out of the app without entering a password, So if it is just an app after android 4.0 it just comes to the home screen when home button is pressed, So If I create a custom launcher and make it default even after pressing home button it will be inside the app if I am right, but is there any way I can do the same without a launcher
Also to avoid the phone number suggestions which happens when we dial parts of numbers in the dialler, should the phone be rooted to so it or is it possible without that?
Thanks in advance to everyone for taking time to read this, hoping a positive solution

Disable Home Button or system bar on tablet

I'm working on an existing Android application for medical purposes.
The back button and home button should be disabled.
With the existing code, the back button is disabled.
For disabling the home button they used onAttachedWindow with LayoutParams TYPE KEYGUARD,
but this security hole is fixed since 4.0.
I tried a lot of similar questions, but none worked out for me.
What is the way to get this done these days?
Also, hiding the status bar on tablet (where the home & back button live) would do the trick,
so any suggestions there are equally helpful!
Update: also, free third party apps that do the hiding trick are okay!
This sounds like a kiosk or dedicated use kinda thing, yes? You want your app to "own" the tablet and prevent other usage? I did this for an app whose sole purpose was to act as a remote control for a custom device. Basically I created two apps, a "custom launcher" app and the app that did the remote control. It's probably possible to integrate the two, but I wanted to support both dedicated and non-dedicated use. Note that I gave the launcher app a password-protected way to access settings so that I could recover the tablet at any time.
You can find a number of tutorials that will guide you through creating a custom launcher, just strip out all the stuff that makes it a generic launcher and replace it with an image button or similar that launches the actual app, or replace the launcher activity with your main app activity. Warning: I never figured out how to remove the launcher except by going into the settings.
As for hiding the system bar (notifications and status icons at the top of the screen), you'll want to use a full-screen theme like #android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar.Fullscreen.
As for hiding the home button I took this approach:
View main_layout = this.findViewById(android.R.id.content).getRootView();
main_layout.setSystemUiVisibility(View.STATUS_BAR_HIDDEN);
Unfortunately the STATUS_BAR_HIDDEN flag is deprecated now, but I think some of the other options would have the same effect. Regardless, the best you can achieve within Android's intended use is to temporarily hide the navigation buttons (home and back). A tap on the screen will bring them back.

Is it possible for an app to alter the Android home screen?

I'm a web developer. I have an idea for an Android app, but before I dive in and start learning, could someone please answer the following:
Is it possible for a regular app (installed from the Market)...
to add/remove icons (of other apps) to/from the home screen?
to rearrange icons on the home screen?
to change the home screen's wallpaper?
To clarify: I don't want to replace the home screen application itself (I believe this is only possible on rooted phones?); I just want to programmatically customise the stock home screen. I know the user can do this themselves, but can an app do it?
If possible, please link to documentation of the relevant APIs.
Your answer to following question
Is it possible for a regular app (installed from the Market)...
to add/remove icons (of other apps) to/from the home screen? No, it can only add its own icon
to rearrange icons on the home screen? Again, no
to change the home screen's wallpaper? Yes, you can do that
As far as for rooted phone goes yes you can do it :)

How to place a screen control in the home screen that will be always visible

I need a screen control (possibly but not mandatory an app widget) that will seat
on Android's homescreen and will always be visible to the user - even when he scrolls the homescreen to the next page.
Please help me if any body have done this before.
I think the only way you will be able to do this is if you implement your own Launcher.
The functionality that you're looking for, being able to place a static widget on every screen of the launcher regardless of how many screens they have, isn't currently available in Android, nor any of the launcher apps out there (Go launcher, ADW, Launcher pro etc) nor any of the versions of Android which have been rewritten by the phone manufacturers (HTC's Sense, Samsungs Touch Wiz etc)
It's a big job to write a Launcher yourself, but the stock Android Launcher code is available to play about with from https://android.googlesource.com.

Installing an app to my home screen android

I am looking for a way for when someone installs my application it goes in their "all applications menu". Then, after they run the app and go into the setup, when they click save on their options, it will create a shortcut on the home screen (not the all applications menu). Also, is it possible to have this shortcut not do the same thing as the other app? meaning that if I wanted to change the settings I could click on the app in the all applications menu and if I click on the app in the home screen it does something else.
First off, there's lots of different home screen implementations on Android. The stock Android one, Samsung, HTC and Motorola all have their own variants, then third party ones like Launcher Pro. All use different stores as to what to keep on the home screen, may provide different profiles for the home screen (home, work, etc).
Second, the home screen is prime real estate. And it is also the user's real estate. If there was programmatic access to the home screen, what happened to the Windows quick launch, desktop, favorites menu (in older versions of IE), and older pin area of the start menu (the very top of it in Win 95/98).
To quote Raymond Chen "I bet somebody got a really nice bonus for that feature". So, in short, even if it was possible, please don't. As awesome as you think your program is, the user might not think the same.
