I am trying to take multiple input using edit text and i want to perform calculation .I am trying to develop a freight calculator in this one field type of delivery normal or express and other field is weight of package. i have no idea how to take input from both and calculate price.
This is how i do it.
To collect input from user use EditText,
sample shown below replicate this with different ID for edit text.
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Your quantity here"/>
<EditText
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="input space for user"
android:textSize="15sp"
android:id="#+id/edit1"
android:inputType="number" />
</LinearLayout>
use TextView to display answer
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/answer"
android:textSize="25sp"/>
Create a button that user can press when he fills up the inputs required
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Calculate"
android:onClick="simulate"/>
now in your JAVA file make an onClick event handler
public void simulate(View view) {
EditText edit1 = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.edit1);
EditText edit2 = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.edit2);
l1 = Integer.valueOf(edit1.getText().toString());
l2 = Integer.valueOf(edit2.getText().toString());
//perform your calculation here
TextView rs1 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.result);
rs1.setText(""+ your answer);
}
Create a reference to both EditText fields at the class level, for example:
private EditText firstEditText;
private EditText secondEditText;
Within the the onCreate() function in your Activity, or the onCreateView() within your Fragment, bind the reference to your view:
Activity
firstEditText = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.edit_text_first);
secondEditText = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.edit_text_second);
Fragment
firstEditText = (EditText) view.findViewById(R.id.edit_text_first);
secondEditText = (EditText) view.findViewById(R.id.edit_text_second);
Then on some click event or at whatever point you'll want to pull the value from both of the EditText's:
String firstValue = firstEditText.getText().toString();
String secondValue = secondEditText.getText().toString();
Now you're free to parse/calculate/interrogate the values however you want.

Hello guys i am making simple game that can take point if i click right button.
so there is 5 imagebutton and 1 textview. textview will generate random number 1-5 . and those 5 imagebuttons has 5 different id , so my point is if textview generates 1 number how can i check it its right button using if statement.
if ( textview(current generated number ) == imagebutton(id) ) {
counter++)
something like this can you help me guys? example code would be nice :D
Set the tag value for the buttons
either from xml set Tag attribute
Tag = "1"
or
btn.setTag("1");
Add the buttons corresponding value to its tag and then compare it with tags value
in onClick method you get id of button clicked
Button btn = (Button) findViewById(id);
string valu = btn.getTag();
Now compare the textView value with this tag value.
string txt = textView.getText();
if(txt.equals(valu))
{
// do what you want
}
You could store the button resource IDs an array of int. Then in a common click handler, you could test whether the button clicked was the same as the one randomly selected. Here's a simplistic, minimal example. It assumes you've set and displayed the random number before you get the button clicks.
In your class, define these fields:
private int myButtons[] = null;
private int randomNumber = 0;
In onCreate(), add the following:
myButtons = new int[] {R.id.btn0, R.id.btn1, R.id.btn2, R.id.btn3, R.id.btn4};
Add the method:
public btnClick(View v) {
if (findViewById(myButtons[randomNumber]) == v)
Log.i(TAG, "Correct!");
else
Log.i(TAG, "Incorrect!");
}
Then in your layout XML, define the buttons with your click handler:
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn0"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="onClick"
android:text="#string/btn0" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="onClick"
android:text="#string/btn1" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="onClick"
android:text="#string/btn2" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="onClick"
android:text="#string/btn3" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn4"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="onClick"
android:text="#string/btn4" />
I have a simple activity which needs to accept a 4-digit PIN number using a custom pin-pad (buttons on the screen). The digits are stored in four EditTexts.
When I click a button, the text in the button is stored in a char[] (myEditText.getText() shows that this is happening), the focus is moved to the next EditText through an onFocusListener() and the Log output shows that this is all happening correctly.
11-20 10:19:56.969: I/DebugA(17742): Pin1 updated to: 1 // Pin1 is the ID
11-20 10:19:58.289: I/DebugA(17742): Pin2 updated to: 2 // '2' is Pin2.getText()
11-20 10:19:58.849: I/DebugA(17742): Pin3 updated to: 3
11-20 10:19:59.659: I/DebugA(17742): Pin4 updated to: 4
The screen itself is simply not being updated. The EditTexts all appear empty, even though the code executes perfectly.
I have looked through a whole heap of answers on SO and tried many of the suggestions with absolutely no luck, so I am posting this question which I hope someone can shed some light on! Has anyone else had this happen?
Here's some of the layout file:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >

...and the buttons are:
<LinearLayout

android:layout_width="wrap_content"

</LinearLayout>
The activity is a standard activity (MyActivity extends Activity).
Any thoughts?
UPDATE
Here's some of the java as requested:
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_login);
LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
RelativeLayout layout = (RelativeLayout)inflater.inflate(R.layout.activity_login, null);
EditText Pin1 = (EditText) layout.findViewById(R.id.Pin1);
Pin1.setOnFocusChangeListener(focusListener);
Pin1.setText("1"); // <--THIS HAS NO EFFECT
EditText Pin2 = (EditText) layout.findViewById(R.id.Pin2);
Pin2.setOnFocusChangeListener(focusListener);
EditText Pin3 = (EditText) layout.findViewById(R.id.Pin3);
Pin3.setOnFocusChangeListener(focusListener);
EditText Pin4 = (EditText) layout.findViewById(R.id.Pin4);
Pin4.setOnFocusChangeListener(focusListener);
...
...
...
}
The Onclick method is:
public void btnPinClick(View btnPin) {
String PinNumber = ((Button)btnPin).getText().toString();
RelativeLayout layout = (RelativeLayout)getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.activity_login, null);
ArrayList<View> views = (ArrayList<View>) layout.getFocusables(View.FOCUS_DOWN);
EditText nextItem = null;
for (int i = 0; i < views.size(); i++) {
// THIS IS THE CORRECT EditText FOR EACH OF THESE
EditText textBox = (EditText) views.get(i);
if (textBox.getTag().toString().equals(currentText)) {
textBox.setText(PinNumber);
pin[i] = PinNumber.toCharArray()[0];
Log.i("DebugA", textBox.getTag().toString() + " updated to: " + textBox.getText().toString());
textBox.invalidate();
textBox.refreshDrawableState();
if(i+1 < views.size()) {
nextItem = (EditText) views.get(i+1);
}
else {
doCheckPin();
}
break;
}
}
if(nextItem != null){
nextItem.requestFocus();
currentText = nextItem.getTag().toString();
}
}
UPDATE 2
Here is the code for the OnFocusChangeListener as requested:
protected OnFocusChangeListener focusListener = new OnFocusChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onFocusChange(View v, boolean hasFocus) {
if(hasFocus) {
//THIS SIMPLY SETS A VARIABLE STRING TO SAY WHICH
//EditText HAS FOCUS.
currentText = v.getTag().toString();
}
}
};
It looks like you're using a layout inflater in addition to setContentView in your activity. And affecting the edittexts referenced by the inflater. Try removing use of the inflater and rely solely on setContentView for this part of the activity. You might be performing in an incorrect view hierarchy.
I have updated to ADT version 20. After that I can't use EditText. For API level 16 it shows some error. For lower API levels there is no error but I can't get the input of EditText. It shows an empty result.
Sample code I used:
java code
public class sample extends Activity {
EditText edt;
Button btn;
TextView txt;
String str;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
edt = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editText1);
btn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button1);
txt = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView2);
str = edt.getText().toString();
btn.setClickable(true);
btn.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
Log.d("WordWeb","entered - "+str);
txt.setText("you entered"+str);
}
});
}
}
XML CODING
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/LinearLayout1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/Search"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<EditText
android:id="#+id/editText1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:ems="10" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/button1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:layout_margin="10pt"
android:text="Button" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:text="Large Text"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
Actually, you are trying to get text from EditText in onCreate() of Activity, which has no any text contains yet.
So Just put the line, str = edt.getText().toString(); in button's click() then you will get the result,
Like,,
btn.setClickable(true);
btn.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
str = edt.getText().toString();
Log.d("WordWeb","entered - "+str);
txt.setText("you entered"+str);
}
});
Your statement str = edt.getText().toString(); should be inside the onClick handler.
The code cannot access the value because after onCreate ends the value found in the EditText abd str is beyond the scope. So put the str = edt.getText().toString(); statement inside the onClick so that when user clicks the button it can access the value.
I think you are trying to get EditText (i.e. edt) value in onCreate() and I think you are entering value after the completion of onCreate() method.So that means you are not getting value for your str.
That's why you are not able to set the value to TextView.
just put text inside your button otherwise it will not work becz whatever u are getting in strings is also working like u are just cre
I have an application with an input text where the users have to insert an information and a button "+" beside to input text.
I would like to make my form dynamic in a way that when a user pushes on "+" button appears dynamically another text input and another "+" button beside this one, the process is repeated in the same way.
I created and xml file, sample_content:
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/attempt"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:text="TextView" />
<Button
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:layout_width="36dp"
android:layout_height="32dp"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginRight="22dp"
android:text="+" />
<EditText
android:layout_width="229dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginRight="14dp"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/addKey"
android:background="#drawable/inputtext_corner"
android:ems="10"
android:textSize="18sp" >
<requestFocus />
</EditText>
</RelativeLayout>
and in my Activity, AddDeviceActivity I put:
inflater = LayoutInflater.from(AddDeviceActivity.this);
Button addKey = (Button) findViewById(R.id.addKey);
addKey.setOnClickListener(new Button.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
final RelativeLayout canvas = (RelativeLayout) AddDeviceActivity.this.findViewById(R.id.my_canvas);
final View childView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.sample_component, canvas, false);
// TODO: Look up the 5 different signatures of the addView method,
// and pick that best fits your needs
canvas.addView(childView);
}
});
But this solution doesn't work because when I add the first input text and the first button, I don't know how to make the second button work in my AddDeviceActivity dynamicly
Just wondering whether you can do this:
Have your activity implement OnClickListener and add this method to your activity:
public void onClick(View v) {
final RelativeLayout canvas = (RelativeLayout) AddDeviceActivity.this.findViewById(R.id.my_canvas);
final View childView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.sample_component, canvas, false);
canvas.addView(childView);
((Button)childView.findViewById(R.id.addKey)).setOnClickListener(AddDeviceActivity.this);
}
And then change your initial code to use
addKey.setOnClickListener(this);
instead of an anonymous inner class.
I haven't tested this, but don't see why it wouldn't work.
check out this, pass null instead of canvas object in inflate() method
addKey.setOnClickListener(new Button.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
final RelativeLayout canvas = (RelativeLayout) AddDeviceActivity.this.findViewById(R.id.my_canvas);
final View childView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.sample_component, null, false);
// TODO: Look up the 5 different signatures of the addView method,
// and pick that best fits your needs
canvas.addView(childView);
}
});
I am trying to read a EditText box and send its contents to another method from within a Custom dialog box. My current code causes a Force Close. The logcat is very vague... however I know the uncaught exception takes place in this method:
public void getName(){
Dialog dialog = new Dialog(main.this);
dialog.setContentView(R.layout.customdialog);
dialog.setTitle("New Game");
dialog.setCancelable(true);
//there are a lot of settings, for dialog, check them all out!
final EditText inputBox = new EditText(this);
//set up text
final TextView text = (TextView) dialog.findViewById(R.id.TextView01);
text.setText("Enter Your Name...");
//set up button
final Button button = (Button) dialog.findViewById(R.id.namebutton);
button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
String str = inputBox.getText().toString();
setName(str);
}
});
//now that the dialog is set up, it's time to show it
dialog.show();
}
Here is the custom XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/linearLayout1">
<TextView android:text="#+id/TextView01" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/nameprompt"></TextView>
<EditText android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:id="#+id/editText1" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:inputType="textPersonName" android:text="Player">
<requestFocus></requestFocus>
</EditText>
<Button android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/namebutton" android:text="Ok" android:layout_width="fill_parent"></Button>
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
Any ideas???
You have the EditText in your XML for the Dialog's layout... and you're properly using findViewById() to instantiate your TextView...
You need to do the same for the EditText, also use findViewById() to instantiate it.
final EditText inputBox = (EditText) dialog.findViewById(R.id.editText1);
Something is up with the inputBox object. You create it in this method, but I don't see you actually adding to the layout anywhere. When this method completes, you'll be displaying the dialog box, but the input box won't be displayed anywhere. In fact, I think that inputBox might be garbage collected since there are not references to if around after the getName() method completes. Therefore when you call get input on it, it might be null.
I think what you meant to do was this:
final EditText inputBox = (EditText)dialog.findViewById(R.id.editText1)
