xamarin android push notification only works once - android

i'm developing an android app and i followed this link to use google push notification
my problem is that the first time that app starts, push notification work's fine but as I restart my app, push notification stops working and I cant receive notifications.
here is my code:
[Service(Exported = false)]
class RegistrationIntentService : IntentService
{
static object locker = new object();
public RegistrationIntentService() : base("RegistrationIntentService") { }
protected override void OnHandleIntent(Intent intent)
{
try
{
Log.Info("RegistrationIntentService", "Calling InstanceID.GetToken");
lock (locker)
{
var instanceID = InstanceID.GetInstance(this);
var token = instanceID.GetToken(
"my_id", GoogleCloudMessaging.InstanceIdScope, null);
Log.Info("RegistrationIntentService", "GCM Registration Token: " + token);
SendRegistrationToAppServer(token);
Subscribe(token);
}
}
catch (Exception e)
{
Log.Debug("RegistrationIntentService", "Failed to get a registration token");
return;
}
}
void SendRegistrationToAppServer(string token)
{
// some code
}
void Subscribe(string token)
{
var pubSub = GcmPubSub.GetInstance(this);
pubSub.Subscribe(token, "/topics/global", null);
}
}
[Service(Exported = false), IntentFilter(new[] { "com.google.android.c2dm.intent.RECEIVE" })]
public class MyGcmListenerService : GcmListenerService
{
public override void OnMessageReceived(string from, Bundle data)
{
Log.Debug("MyGcmListenerService", "From: " + from);
Log.Debug("MyGcmListenerService", "Message: " + message);
}
}
[Service(Exported = false), IntentFilter(new[] { "com.google.android.gms.iid.InstanceID" })]
class MyInstanceIDListenerService : InstanceIDListenerService
{
public override void OnTokenRefresh()
{
var intent = new Intent(this, typeof(RegistrationIntentService));
StartService(intent);
}
}
and i send notification with this method
public static void SendNotification(string MESSAGE, string token)
{
var jGcmData = new JObject();
var jData = new JObject();
jData.Add("message", MESSAGE);
jGcmData.Add("to", token);
jGcmData.Add("data", jData);
var url = new Uri("https://gcm-http.googleapis.com/gcm/send");
try
{
using (var client = new HttpClient())
{
client.DefaultRequestHeaders.Accept.Add(
new MediaTypeWithQualityHeaderValue("application/json"));
client.DefaultRequestHeaders.TryAddWithoutValidation(
"Authorization", "key=" + API_KEY);
System.Threading.Tasks.Task.WaitAll(client.PostAsync(url,
new StringContent(jGcmData.ToString(), Encoding.Default, "application/json"))
.ContinueWith(response =>
{
Console.WriteLine(response);
Console.WriteLine("Message sent: check the client device notification tray.");
}));
}
}
catch (Exception e)
{
Console.WriteLine("Unable to send GCM message:");
Console.Error.WriteLine(e.StackTrace);
}
}
do you have any idea?

Is this in the emulator? I had this issue with the emulator and fixed it by turning off the option to preserve application data/cache between deploys. In Visualstudio it's Tools->Options-Xamarin->Android Options. Now I get a new token on each deploy and it always works.
Why this happens I haven't figured out. Maybe it's a security feature that a different build of the app cannot use the same taken?

From the official documentation of Xamarin:
"If you force-close the app, FCM will stop delivering notifications. Android prevents background service broadcasts from inadvertently or unnecessarily launching components of stopped applications. (For more information about this behavior, see Launch controls on stopped applications.) For this reason, it is necessary to manually uninstall the app each time you run it and stop it from a debug session – this forces FCM to generate a new token so that messages will continue to be received."

Firebase cloud messaging subcribe to topic and send message Kotlin [duplicate]

I have been trying to read the official docs and guides about how to send message from one device to another. I have saved registration token of both devices in the Real Time Database, thus I have the registration token of another device.
I have tried the following way to send the message
RemoteMessage message = new RemoteMessage.Builder(getRegistrationToken())
.setMessageId(incrementIdAndGet())
.addData("message", "Hello")
.build();
FirebaseMessaging.getInstance().send(message);
However this is not working. The other device doesn't receive any message. I am not even sure, if I can use upstream message sending to conduct device to device communication.
PS: I just want to know if device-to-device messaging is possible using FCM? If yes, then is the code I used have some issue? If yes, then what is the correct way.
Update:
My question was to ask whether device to device messaging without using any separate server other than firebase could messaging is possible or not, if yes than how, since there's no documentation about it. I do not understand what is left to explain here? Anyways I got the answer and will update it as an answer once the question gets reopened.
Firebase has two features to send messages to devices:
the Notifications panel in your Firebase Console allows you to send notifications to specific devices, groups of users, or topics that users subscribed to.
by calling Firebase Cloud Messaging API, you can send messages with whatever targeting strategy you prefer. Calling the FCM API requires access to your Server key, which you should never expose on client devices. That's why you should always run such code on an app server.
The Firebase documentation shows this visually:
Sending messages from one device directly to another device is not supported through the Firebase Cloud Messaging client-side SDKs.
Update: I wrote a blog post detailing how to send notifications between Android devices using Firebase Database, Cloud Messaging and Node.js.
Update 2: You can now also use Cloud Functions for Firebase to send messages securely, without spinning up a server. See this sample use-case to get started. If you don't want to use Cloud Functions, you can run the same logic on any trusted environment you already have, such as your development machine, or a server you control.
Warning There is a very important reason why we don't mention this approach anywhere. This exposes your server key in the APK that
you put on every client device. It can (and thus will) be taken from
there and may lead to abuse of your project. I highly recommend
against taking this approach, except for apps that you only put on
your own devices. – Frank van Puffelen
Ok, so the answer by Frank was correct that Firebase does not natively support device to device messaging. However there's one loophole in that. The Firebase server doesn't identify whether you have send the request from an actual server or are you doing it from your device.
So all you have to do is send a Post Request to Firebase's messaging server along with the Server Key. Just keep this in mind that the server key is not supposed to be on the device, but there's no other option if you want device-to-device messaging using Firebase Messaging.
I am using OkHTTP instead of default way of calling the Rest API. The code is something like this -
public static final String FCM_MESSAGE_URL = "https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send";
OkHttpClient mClient = new OkHttpClient();
public void sendMessage(final JSONArray recipients, final String title, final String body, final String icon, final String message) {
new AsyncTask<String, String, String>() {
#Override
protected String doInBackground(String... params) {
try {
JSONObject root = new JSONObject();
JSONObject notification = new JSONObject();
notification.put("body", body);
notification.put("title", title);
notification.put("icon", icon);
JSONObject data = new JSONObject();
data.put("message", message);
root.put("notification", notification);
root.put("data", data);
root.put("registration_ids", recipients);
String result = postToFCM(root.toString());
Log.d(TAG, "Result: " + result);
return result;
} catch (Exception ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
}
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
try {
JSONObject resultJson = new JSONObject(result);
int success, failure;
success = resultJson.getInt("success");
failure = resultJson.getInt("failure");
Toast.makeText(getCurrentActivity(), "Message Success: " + success + "Message Failed: " + failure, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
} catch (JSONException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
Toast.makeText(getCurrentActivity(), "Message Failed, Unknown error occurred.", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
}
}.execute();
}
String postToFCM(String bodyString) throws IOException {
RequestBody body = RequestBody.create(JSON, bodyString);
Request request = new Request.Builder()
.url(FCM_MESSAGE_URL)
.post(body)
.addHeader("Authorization", "key=" + SERVER_KEY)
.build();
Response response = mClient.newCall(request).execute();
return response.body().string();
}
I hope Firebase will come with a better solution in future. But till then, I think this is the only way. The other way would be to send topic message or group messaging. But that was not in the scope of the question.
Update:
The JSONArray is defined like this -
JSONArray regArray = new JSONArray(regIds);
regIds is a String array of registration ids, you want to send this message to. Keep in mind that the registration ids must always be in an array, even if you want it to send to a single recipient.
I have also been using direct device to device gcm messaging in my prototype. It has been working very well. We dont have any server. We exchange GCM reg id using sms/text and then communicate using GCM after that. I am putting here code related to GCM handling

According to the new documentation which was updated on October 2, 2018 you must send post request as below
https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send
Content-Type:application/json
Authorization:key=AIzaSyZ-1u...0GBYzPu7Udno5aA //Server key
{
"to": "sent device's registration token",
"data": {
"hello": "message from someone",
}
}
To get device's registration token extend FirebaseMessagingService and override onNewToken(String token)
For more info refer to doc https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging/android/device-group
I am late but above solutions has helped me to write down this simple answer, you can send your message directly to android devices from android application, here is the simple implementation I have done and it works great for me.
compile android volley library
compile 'com.android.volley:volley:1.0.0'
Just copy paste this simple function ;) and your life will become smooth just like knife in butter. :D
public static void sendPushToSingleInstance(final Context activity, final HashMap dataValue /*your data from the activity*/, final String instanceIdToken /*firebase instance token you will find in documentation that how to get this*/ ) {
final String url = "https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send";
StringRequest myReq = new StringRequest(Request.Method.POST,url,
new Response.Listener<String>() {
#Override
public void onResponse(String response) {
Toast.makeText(activity, "Bingo Success", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
},
new Response.ErrorListener() {
#Override
public void onErrorResponse(VolleyError error) {
Toast.makeText(activity, "Oops error", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}) {
#Override
public byte[] getBody() throws com.android.volley.AuthFailureError {
Map<String, Object> rawParameters = new Hashtable();
rawParameters.put("data", new JSONObject(dataValue));
rawParameters.put("to", instanceIdToken);
return new JSONObject(rawParameters).toString().getBytes();
};
public String getBodyContentType()
{
return "application/json; charset=utf-8";
}
#Override
public Map<String, String> getHeaders() throws AuthFailureError {
HashMap<String, String> headers = new HashMap<String, String>();
headers.put("Authorization", "key="+YOUR_LEGACY_SERVER_KEY_FROM_FIREBASE_CONSOLE);
headers.put("Content-Type","application/json");
return headers;
}
};
Volley.newRequestQueue(activity).add(myReq);
}
Note
If you want to send message to topics so you can change parameter instanceIdToken to something like /topics/topicName.
For groups implementation is the same but you just need to take care of parameters. checkout Firebase documentation and you can pass those parameters.
let me know if you face any issue.

Auto send push notification from app server

Is there any way to send a push notification from server when a user complete a task? For example: A todo app will notify on that date with push notification. I want to use firebase and firestore for storing user tokens.
Alarm manager can be a solution that I have found but I don't wanna use it.
Yes, you can use scheduler to send notification from server to your app:
You may follow my working code:
Emplement IJob:
public class SendNotificationViaFcm: IJob
{
public void Execute(IJobExecutionContext context)
{
bool isNotificationSent=false;
try
{
var taskToSendNotification = FirebaseCloudMessaging.SendMessage();
Task.WaitAll(taskToSendNotification);
isNotificationSent = taskToSendNotification.Result;
}
catch (Exception exception)
when (
exception is ObjectDisposedException || exception is ArgumentNullException ||
exception is AggregateException)
{
}
catch (Exception exception) when (exception is InvalidOperationException)
{
}
catch (Exception exception)
{
// ignored
}
}
}
Call FCM Api from your server:
public class FirebaseCloudMessaging
{
private static readonly Uri FcmUri = new Uri(
uriString: #"https://fcm.googleapis.com",
uriKind: UriKind.Absolute);
private const string FcmApiKey = "Your Legacy Server Key";
public static async Task<bool> SendMessage()
{
using (var httpClient = new HttpClient())
{
httpClient.BaseAddress = FcmUri;
httpClient.DefaultRequestHeaders.Clear();
httpClient.DefaultRequestHeaders.TryAddWithoutValidation("Authorization",
"key=" + FcmApiKey);
var response = await httpClient.PostAsJsonAsync(#"/fcm/send", new
{
to = "/topics/global",
priority = "high",
data = new
{
title = "Warning",
message = "Please start app to track movemoent!"
}
//to = "/topics/global",
//priority = "high",
//notification = new
//{
// title = "Warning!",
// body = "Please start app to track movemoent!"
//}
});
Debug.Write(response.Content.ReadAsStringAsync());
var ck = response.IsSuccessStatusCode;
return response.IsSuccessStatusCode;
}
}
}
Implement schedular for your time interval:
public class Scheduler
{
public static void Start()
{
try
{
IScheduler scheduler = StdSchedulerFactory.GetDefaultScheduler();
scheduler.Start();
// scheduler.Shutdown();
var sentCloudNotification = JobBuilder.Create<SendNotificationViaFcm>().Build();
var cloudNotificationTrigger = TriggerBuilder.Create().WithSimpleSchedule(x => x.WithIntervalInMinutes(1).RepeatForever()).Build();
scheduler.ScheduleJob(sentCloudNotification, cloudNotificationTrigger);
}
catch (SchedulerException exception)
{
Debug.Write(exception.Message);
}
catch (Exception exception)
{
Debug.Write(exception.Message);
}
}
}
Finally Run in from your Global.asax.cs
protected void Application_Start()
{
Scheduler.Start();
}
It sounds like you're looking for a tool that allows you to schedule transactional notifications. What sort of server technology are you using?
From a high level you could do something like this:
1) user adds a task in the Android application
2) android application sends request to server to save the task
3) you have some code that runs in some sort of on task save callback that schedules a block of code to run in the future using crontab, celery or something similar.
4) the block of code that runs in the future is an api call to twilio to send a push notification

Is it possible to send notification from android device to all android devices using firebase without 3rd party server [duplicate]

I have been trying to read the official docs and guides about how to send message from one device to another. I have saved registration token of both devices in the Real Time Database, thus I have the registration token of another device.

Warning There is a very important reason why we don't mention this approach anywhere. This exposes your server key in the APK that

The code is something like this -
public static final String FCM_MESSAGE_URL = "https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send";
OkHttpClient mClient = new OkHttpClient();
public void sendMessage(final JSONArray recipients, final String title, final String body, final String icon, final String message) {
new AsyncTask<String, String, String>() {
#Override
protected String doInBackground(String... params) {
try {
JSONObject root = new JSONObject();
JSONObject notification = new JSONObject();
notification.put("body", body);
notification.put("title", title);
notification.put("icon", icon);
JSONObject data = new JSONObject();
data.put("message", message);
root.put("notification", notification);
root.put("data", data);
root.put("registration_ids", recipients);
String result = postToFCM(root.toString());
Log.d(TAG, "Result: " + result);
return result;
} catch (Exception ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
}
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
try {
JSONObject resultJson = new JSONObject(result);
int success, failure;
success = resultJson.getInt("success");
failure = resultJson.getInt("failure");
Toast.makeText(getCurrentActivity(), "Message Success: " + success + "Message Failed: " + failure, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
} catch (JSONException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
Toast.makeText(getCurrentActivity(), "Message Failed, Unknown error occurred.", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
}
}.execute();
}
String postToFCM(String bodyString) throws IOException {
RequestBody body = RequestBody.create(JSON, bodyString);
Request request = new Request.Builder()
.url(FCM_MESSAGE_URL)
.post(body)
.addHeader("Authorization", "key=" + SERVER_KEY)
.build();
Response response = mClient.newCall(request).execute();
return response.body().string();
}
I hope Firebase will come with a better solution in future. But till then, I think this is the only way. The other way would be to send topic message or group messaging. But that was not in the scope of the question.
Update:
The JSONArray is defined like this -
JSONArray regArray = new JSONArray(regIds);
regIds is a String array of registration ids, you want to send this message to.

{
"to": "sent device's registration token",
"data": {
"hello": "message from someone",
}
}
public static void sendPushToSingleInstance(final Context activity, final HashMap dataValue /*your data from the activity*/, final String instanceIdToken /*firebase instance token you will find in documentation that how to get this*/ ) {
final String url = "https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send";
StringRequest myReq = new StringRequest(Request.Method.POST,url,
new Response.Listener<String>() {
#Override
public void onResponse(String response) {
Toast.makeText(activity, "Bingo Success", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
},
new Response.ErrorListener() {
#Override
public void onErrorResponse(VolleyError error) {
Toast.makeText(activity, "Oops error", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}) {
#Override
public byte[] getBody() throws com.android.volley.AuthFailureError {
Map<String, Object> rawParameters = new Hashtable();
rawParameters.put("data", new JSONObject(dataValue));
rawParameters.put("to", instanceIdToken);
return new JSONObject(rawParameters).toString().getBytes();
};
public String getBodyContentType()
{
return "application/json; charset=utf-8";
}
#Override
public Map<String, String> getHeaders() throws AuthFailureError {
HashMap<String, String> headers = new HashMap<String, String>();
headers.put("Authorization", "key="+YOUR_LEGACY_SERVER_KEY_FROM_FIREBASE_CONSOLE);
headers.put("Content-Type","application/json");
return headers;
}
};
Volley.newRequestQueue(activity).add(myReq);
}
Note
If you want to send message to topics so you can change parameter instanceIdToken to something like /topics/topicName.
For groups implementation is the same but you just need to take care of parameters. checkout Firebase documentation and you can pass those parameters.

How to send one to one message using Firebase Messaging

I have been trying to read the official docs and guides about how to send message from one device to another. I have saved registration token of both devices in the Real Time Database, thus I have the registration token of another device.
I have tried the following way to send the message
RemoteMessage message = new RemoteMessage.Builder(getRegistrationToken())
.setMessageId(incrementIdAndGet())
.addData("message", "Hello")
.build();
FirebaseMessaging.getInstance().send(message);
The code is something like this -
public static final String FCM_MESSAGE_URL = "https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send";
OkHttpClient mClient = new OkHttpClient();
public void sendMessage(final JSONArray recipients, final String title, final String body, final String icon, final String message) {
new AsyncTask<String, String, String>() {
#Override
protected String doInBackground(String... params) {
try {
JSONObject root = new JSONObject();
JSONObject notification = new JSONObject();
notification.put("body", body);
notification.put("title", title);
notification.put("icon", icon);
JSONObject data = new JSONObject();
data.put("message", message);
root.put("notification", notification);
root.put("data", data);
root.put("registration_ids", recipients);
String result = postToFCM(root.toString());
Log.d(TAG, "Result: " + result);
return result;
} catch (Exception ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
}
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
try {
JSONObject resultJson = new JSONObject(result);
int success, failure;
success = resultJson.getInt("success");
failure = resultJson.getInt("failure");
Toast.makeText(getCurrentActivity(), "Message Success: " + success + "Message Failed: " + failure, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
} catch (JSONException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
Toast.makeText(getCurrentActivity(), "Message Failed, Unknown error occurred.", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
}
}.execute();
}
String postToFCM(String bodyString) throws IOException {
RequestBody body = RequestBody.create(JSON, bodyString);
Request request = new Request.Builder()
.url(FCM_MESSAGE_URL)
.post(body)
.addHeader("Authorization", "key=" + SERVER_KEY)
.build();
Response response = mClient.newCall(request).execute();
return response.body().string();
}
I hope Firebase will come with a better solution in future. But till then, I think this is the only way. The other way would be to send topic message or group messaging. But that was not in the scope of the question.
Update:
The JSONArray is defined like this -
JSONArray regArray = new JSONArray(regIds);
regIds is a String array of registration ids, you want to send this message to.

Google cloud message 'Not Registered' failure and unsubscribe best practices?

I'm developing an Android app using Xamarin Forms that's primary purpose is receiving push notifications of events. I've had some seemingly random trouble receiving Not Registered failures when sending a notification, after the device successfully calls GcmPubSub.getInstance().subscribe(). This was happening a week or 2 ago and I thought I had the problem resolved by always using the main application context for token generation and the getInstance() call.
Yesterday around noon EST the problem reoccurred and then just as suddenly started working around 4:00 - 4:30. Afternoon was full of commenting code to simplify things and other random things like removing and re-adding NuGet packages. Now I'm back to the code that I had in place just before it stopped working yesterday and everything is happy as a clam.
When this problem happens it's only when the subscribe() call is made over wifi. If I debug the app on my phone on the cellular network I never receive the Not Registered failure.
I'm currently calling unsubscribe() when the user logs off in the app, and I've been able to unsubscribe and re-subscribe successfully (this morning).
Is unsubscribing on log off a best practice for push notifications when the notifications are user specific? I thought that there may be a possibility that this was making the GCM servers confused in some way.
Any suggestions on why I might be receiving the Not Registered failures would be awesome too.

public class MainActivity : global::Xamarin.Forms.Platform.Android.FormsApplicationActivity
{
public static string NotificationTopic = "MyEvent";
protected override void OnCreate(Bundle bundle)
{
base.OnCreate(bundle);
global::Xamarin.Forms.Forms.Init(this, bundle);
LoadApplication(new App(DeviceType.Android));
if (IsPlayServicesAvailable())
{
var intent = GcmRegistrationService.GetIntent(this, NotificationTopic);
StartService(intent);
}
}
public bool IsPlayServicesAvailable()
{
var resultCode = GoogleApiAvailability.Instance.IsGooglePlayServicesAvailable(this);
if (resultCode != ConnectionResult.Success)
{
if (GoogleApiAvailability.Instance.IsUserResolvableError(resultCode))
ToastHelper.ShowStatus("Google Play Services error: " + GoogleApiAvailability.Instance.GetErrorString(resultCode));
else
{
ToastHelper.ShowStatus("Sorry, notifications are not supported");
}
return false;
}
else
{
return true;
}
}
}
The server side sending of a notification. The Device.CloudMessageToken is populated by the DeviceService.UpdateCloudMessageToken (token) call in the registration service above:
public async Task SendNotificationAsync(Device device, string message, Dictionary<string, string> extraData = null)
{
if (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(device.CloudMessageToken))
throw new Exception("Device is missing a CloudMessageToken");
var apiKey = _appSettingsHelper.GetValue("GoogleApiKey");
var gcmBaseUrl = _appSettingsHelper.GetValue("GoogleCloudMessageBaseUrl");
var gcmSendPath = _appSettingsHelper.GetValue("GoogleCloudMessageSendPath");
using (var client = new HttpClient())
{
client.BaseAddress = new Uri(gcmBaseUrl);
client.DefaultRequestHeaders.TryAddWithoutValidation("Authorization", "key=" + apiKey);
client.DefaultRequestHeaders.Accept.Add(new MediaTypeWithQualityHeaderValue("application/json"));
var messageInfo = new MessageInfo
{
to = device.CloudMessageToken,
data = new Dictionary<string, string>
{
{"message", message}
}
};
if (extraData != null)
{
foreach (var data in extraData)
{
messageInfo.data.Add(data.Key, data.Value);
}
}
var messageInfoJson = JsonConvert.SerializeObject(messageInfo);
var response =
await
client.PostAsync(gcmSendPath,
new StringContent(messageInfoJson, Encoding.UTF8, "application/json"));
response.EnsureSuccessStatusCode();
var content = await response.Content.ReadAsStringAsync();
var contentValues = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<Dictionary<string, object>>(content);
if ((long)contentValues["failure"] == 1)
{
var results = (JArray)contentValues["results"];
throw new Exception(results[0]["error"].ToString());
}
}
}
So yes, the changing of the token seems to have truly fixed my issue. As I was testing the new logic I had a scenario where a token that the InstanceId wanted to use what returning as Not Registered. After I deleted the InstanceId and re-generated a new token I was successfully able to send a message to the device.
As a side note, I also removed the unsubscribe() call from the logout logic. Thanks for the link #gerardnimo
To accomplish this I created a new service which deletes the token and the InstanceId (though I probably only need to delete the InstanceId), and then calls the GcmRegistrationService
/// <summary>
/// Gcm reregistration service to delete and recreate the token.
/// </summary>
[Service(Exported = false)]
public class GcmReregistrationService : IntentService
{
private static readonly object Locker = new object();
public GcmReregistrationService() : base("GcmReregistrationService") { }
public static Intent GetIntent(Context context, string token, string topic)
{
var valuesForActivity = new Bundle();
valuesForActivity.PutString ("token", token);
valuesForActivity.PutString ("topic", topic);
var intent = new Intent(context, typeof(GcmReregistrationService));
intent.PutExtras(valuesForActivity);
return intent;
}
protected override void OnHandleIntent(Intent intent)
{
// Get the count value passed to us from MainActivity:
var token = intent.Extras.GetString("token", "");
var topic = intent.Extras.GetString("topic", "");
var instanceId = InstanceID.GetInstance(Forms.Context);
instanceId.DeleteToken (token, GoogleCloudMessaging.InstanceIdScope);
instanceId.DeleteInstanceID ();
var subscribeIntent = GcmRegistrationService.GetIntent(Forms.Context, topic);
Forms.Context.StartService(subscribeIntent);
}
}
I encountered the same Xamarin issue myself, apparently when you deploy using Xamarin Studio it somehow replaces the APK without triggering whatever is necessary for GetToken() to produce a new token.
The proper solution would be to detect if a Xamarin Studio deployment has occurred and use DeleteInstanceID() to force a token refresh.
The closest I came up with was to detect if the APK has been replaced (either via regular update or Xamarin Studio deployment) and force token refresh only in those cases.
private bool IsForcedTokenRefreshNeeded()
{
DateTime actualWriteDT = GetAPKLastWriteDT();
DateTime? storedLastWriteDT = RetrieveAPKLastWriteDT();
bool forceTokenRefresh = false;
if (storedLastWriteDT.HasValue)
{
if (actualWriteDT != storedLastWriteDT)
{
forceTokenRefresh = true;
StoreAPKLastWriteDT(actualWriteDT);
}
}
else
{
StoreAPKLastWriteDT(actualWriteDT);
}
return forceTokenRefresh;
}
private void StoreAPKLastWriteDT(DateTime lastWriteDT)
{
var prefs = Application.Context.GetSharedPreferences("MyApp", FileCreationMode.Private);
var prefEditor = prefs.Edit();
prefEditor.PutLong("APKLastModified", lastWriteDT.Ticks);
prefEditor.Commit();
}
private DateTime? RetrieveAPKLastWriteDT()
{
//retreive
var prefs = Application.Context.GetSharedPreferences("MyApp", FileCreationMode.Private);
long value = prefs.GetLong("APKLastModified", 0);
if (value == 0)
{
return null;
}
return new DateTime(value);
}
private DateTime GetAPKLastWriteDT()
{
string packageName = Android.App.Application.Context.PackageName;
Android.Content.PM.ApplicationInfo appInfo = this.PackageManager.GetApplicationInfo(packageName, 0);
string appFile = appInfo.SourceDir;
return new FileInfo(appFile).LastWriteTimeUtc;
}
and the main GcmRegistrationService method:
protected override void OnHandleIntent (Intent intent)
{
Log.Info("GcmRegistrationService", "Calling InstanceID.GetToken");
string token;
bool forceTokenRefresh = IsForcedTokenRefreshNeeded();
try
{
lock (m_lock)
{
InstanceID instanceID = InstanceID.GetInstance (Android.App.Application.Context);
if (forceTokenRefresh)
{
Log.Info("GcmRegistrationService", "Forced token refresh");
instanceID.DeleteInstanceID();
}
token = instanceID.GetToken(SenderID, GoogleCloudMessaging.InstanceIdScope, null);
Log.Info("GcmRegistrationService", "GCM Registration Token: " + token);
}
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
Log.Debug("GcmRegistrationService", "Failed to get a registration token: " + ex.Message);
return;
}
try
{
SendRegistrationToAppServer(token);
}
catch(WebException)
{
if (forceTokenRefresh)
{
// this will force a refresh next time
StoreAPKLastWriteDT(DateTime.MinValue);
}
}
try
{
Subscribe(token);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
Log.Debug("GcmRegistrationService", "Failed to subscribe: " + ex.Message);
return;
}
}
