Right now, I have a normal looking Toolbar. What I want to do is add a custom layout between the Toolbar and the TabLayout, as shown in the picture below:
On the left is what my Toolbar looks like now, and on the right is what I want it to look like.
As you can see, I want to add an ImageView and two TextViews to the layout.
How can I achieve this?

AppBarLayout extends LinearLayout, so you can add any number of views to your AppBarLayout: there's no reason to add the views specifically to your Toolbar.
You'll want to make sure you use the same layout_scrollFlags as your Toolbar if you want them to scroll the same.
Toolbar is just a ViewGroup, you can customize is as much as you want.

I can't, however, use this pattern since my "Scrollable view" is a ListView inside a Fragment that is rendered inside the ViewPager. I use the following code in my app:

I've tried putting the ViewPager inside the AppBarLayout, and the Toolbar and TabLayout in a CollapsibleToolbarLayout. However, if I do that, the ViewPager layout isn't even shown and the ActionBar is permanently hidden.
What do I do?
CoordinatorLayout doesn't work with listview. So either replace the listview with a recyclerview (which i would highly recommend) or put your listview inside a NestedScrollView. The xml code you posted is ok. If any of these is not working then post your fragment's xml code and hit me up again
I have a TabLayout that I'm using along with AppBarLayout, ToolBar, and ViewPager in order to have scrollable tabs. At the moment, I have a single tab, but rather than being left aligned the tab is centered.

Then I populate my ListView with items whose layout is defined in another xml file. My problem is with the ViewPager layout_height: it is now set to match_parent, but the element extends over the bottom of the screen, with the result that the last element of the ListView is covered by the navigation buttons.

How can I make the element stop before the navigation buttons?
I faced this issue too. It's because of AppBarLayout behavior in CoordinatorLayout. By default when you create a project from a template it will set up layout with hiding Toolbar. You can run your example and check it - just swipe toolbar up and it will hide and ViewPager will move up and then correctly sticks to the bottom of the screen.
It's not a solution for some cases so you can disable this behavior by removing app:layout_scrollFlags attribute from your Toolbar. After this, the toolbar will become unhideable and the ViewPager will calculate own height correctly.
I solved using a LinearLayout as the only child of the CoordinatorLayout, so everything else becomes a children of the LinearLayout. It seems to me to be just a simple workaround, not a final solution, but now it works. This is now the layout of my main activity:

Your layout, in its current definition, does not make much sense. I think the problem here is that the CoordinatorLayout has been assigned fitsSystemWindows=true. This makes it report its bottom from the very top of the status-bar. On the other hand, the RelativeLayout expects the bottom value from the bottom of the status-bar. This makes your EditText overlap the Toolbar by 25dp - the standard height of a status-bar. You can kind of confirm this by assigning android:fitsSystemWindows="true" to your RelativeLayout with id create_post. In this case, the bottom for CoordinatorLayout will be reported correctly, and the EditText will not overlap the Toolbar.
Usually, the CoordinatorLayout is set to be the parent, and the content (in your case the RelativeLayout) resides as a child of the CoordinatorLayout:

I recently started messing around with the new components of AppCompat 21 and implementing Material Design. Currently, I have an ActionBarActivity with a Toolbar and am trying to have it host a fragment containing a RecyclerView of TextView items (just to test out Recycler). I have items being displayed, but the text in each view is cut off and the entire Recycler is covering the Toolbar like so:
As you can see, there are three TextViews. Their text is cut off halfway and it's overlaying the Toolbar (no Title I know). The TextView item layouts are contained within a RecyclerView layout, which is the layout of the Fragment. The parent Activity has a FrameLayout -> Toolbar, FrameLayout. I am inserting the Fragment into the Activity's sub FrameLayout. Here's the XML:

Use RelativeLayout instead of FrameLayout as top parent. Then just add dependencies like layout_above for the Toolbar or layout_below for the fragment container.
