I've been working on a project for a few weeks in Android Studio. All of a sudden when I opened it today, the project structure is all messed up.
Usually, it looks something like this:
A standard Project Structure.
However, upon opening, My Project Structure looks like this:
My Project Structure.
Any help on reformatting my project structure would be great. I really can't navigate it and find my Layout XML's etc..
You have selected "Project" rather than "Android"
Just select "Android" above the application name, and you are good to go.
Nothing is messed up. You are just in a different view i.e. project view.
What you want to see is Android View.
Change the view to "Android View" by clicking on the dropdown at the top of the box.
I also experienced this issue, but after upgrading Android Studio from version 2.1 to 3.2.
I had to manually update my the gradle.buld (Module: app) file to the current 'buildToolsVersion' (which is not required after the upgrade).
I also updated 'compileSdkVersion' and 'targetSdkVersion' to the latest while I was at it.
I then proceeded with importing the project and was prompted to upgrade Gradle followed by correcting issues that lint complained about.
If anyone is interested in these details- ask and I will post.

I don't know what happened to Android Studio, but after update Design preview of the project is not working property. Look what happend:
I have noticed that after update, SDK has been changed so I installed back SDK used in project but the result is the same. Also I have tried to reinstall android studio but with no result too.
If you are worried about where the code pane is, that is now at the top right corner. You have the option to switch between code, design or both now.
If you are worried that the project is not refreshing to the artifacts such as colors as shown in the error above, then check what BaseTheme your project is implementing and try to clean and rebuild your project. Material Theme can cause such issues as it follows a different naming convention than AppCompat.
When I open layout file in my new Android-Studio file and press preview tab it'll show a message Waiting for build to finish... for infinite time.
Has anyone faced the same issue or any solution?
Cleaning and rebuilding my project solved the issue.
try different theme (may be from Appcompat) and API level from top
OR
If you have made some changes in the layout just undo it.
delete .idea and .gradle folder from root of the project
close android studio , restart it
click on gradle icon from right sidebar and click sync icon to refresh project.
now rebuild the project and it should work.
After a lot searching and I tried all solution which people give here, but any of them didn't solve my problem, I guess this problem is from studio's developers, and they may fix it in next patch.
so I simply re-installed my android studio and it's solved.
Try Clean and rebuild project.and Also try Invalidate caches/Restart.And this issue is also facing because of Low Ram in laptops.
After upgrading to Android Studio version 3.1, in the Project Structure dialog the build tools version was empty. Selecting a build tools version solved the problem for me.
Hope it helps for someone facing the same issue.
See my response on similar question posted:
Android studio error java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Resource name cannot be empty
This error can occur when you update to Android Studio 3.0. It doesn't affect your ability to build a project, but the error does not allow you to visually see your xml layout files. You will also get the error when committing files to GIT, but you can still commit and push.
What I found in one of my projects is that a file was added to the "menu" folder automatically upon Android Studio upgrade, and the file had no name. It was named simply ".xml". All you need to do is delete the file and clean your project, allowing a new build of the project. That should take care of the issue.
For me I had this problem with one file, so I simply created a new one with the same code.
Simply make a build from within AS - not the command line. I get this all the time because I'm mostly using the command line. It's been like this since early versions of AS so I recon it's not high on there list of issues.
Lately (3.2) there is a lot of new internal crashes and what not - not stable at all 🤐
I just installed android studio from old setup and updated it. Now while creating a new project there are no default templates other than these two.
Please help to get that back.
here is the screenshot.
You can see your templates in Android-Studio/plugins/android/lib/templates/activities. In your android-studio there are two activities. So you see two templates. For more templates you can add templates from old android-studio in this android-studio in above path.
"Seems like you have updated the Android Studio but you have not yet updated the SDK, Would you please try updating the Android SDK with latest one and all its components.. This might solve the problem..."
well I updated my studio, and while creating a new project I check marked "include c++ support"(New Feature), so because of this I was not able to see more default template.
So I just unchecked "include c++ support" and everything works good as before.
Thankyou
I have an android project in Eclipse I started developing in android version 2.2.? (i think). I want to update the project to run on my 2.3.3 device. Is there a way to upgrade the project or do I need to create a new one?
So based on your question... I just want to say that an Android 2.2 application will run on your 2.3.3 device without changes. (i.e., applications are forward compatible)
If you still want to change your platform version, read on.
Right click your project in the Project Explorer pane and select "Properties." The window that comes up will look like the following and you can select a different platform target.
If your project then reports some property related errors in the Problems pane, you can fix those by right-clicking your project again and selecting the Android Tools --> Fix Project Properties menu item:
There's a uses-sdk element in your AndroidManifest.xml file, the minSdkVersion attribute should always be set to something, especially if you're going to put your application in the Android Market. The corresponding API levels for Android are well documented.
I did this myself recently in the Eclipse IDE.
If you right click the project and view properties. There is a tag where you can select the target framework (2.2.?, 2.3.3, etc.) Unselect 2.2 and select 2.3.3.
At this point, if you were to save and reopen the project, it would tell you that some properties are messed up. If you right click the project again, and one of the last few menu buttons will have text along the lines of "Fix Project Properties". Click that option and afterwards everything should work correctly.
I can't add comments yet (apparently), but wanted to add to the above answer.
Yes, as noted above, you can edit project properties to bind to a new target android framework version. Under Properties, the heading on the left you want to pick is "Android". And you don't "unselect and select", you simply check the target framework you want (you can only have one active, they are really radio buttons, not checkboxes!).
How to change the version of android application. i did entire code in Android 2.2 version, if i want to install the apk in 2.1 version, it getting parse error. How to change the versions of application. I dont know how to solve this issue. pls guide me to solve this problem.
if you are using eclipse it's very easy
go in eclipse project explorer
then right click on properties
select android from tree view
select your appropriate version.
and then in
in menifest file change
minsdk to 2.1
If you are using eclipse change value in manifest and build target in project configuration (Right click on project->Properties->Android-> Select that one which you need.
You have to also know that there can be some problems because of different version.
