I have an xml screen with three children linear layouts in a parent linear layout of vertical orientation. First child contains an image view and when running the application I can not view any image. Why? is the image size too big?? If so.. how to scale it? However Image is view able in my design tab. of android stdudio. Below is my complete code for xml file.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

1. Add attribute android:gravity="center_horizontal" to LinearLayout, to show ImageView in center.
2. Update ImageView width to android:layout_width="wrap_content" and remove attribute android:layout_gravity="center".
3. Use android:scaleType="fitXY" instead of android:scaleType="centerInside"
Try this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/activity_sign_up"

OUTPUT:
what are the dimens values for these parameters?
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
and why you are using separate linearlayout for imageView even with parent layout as linear?
kindly remove that
have you checked the size of image you are using as a background in ImageView? if size is large than probably image is pushing your rest of your views out of the screen.try to give fixed width and height let's say 100dp for both and see if you are able to see anything.
If you wanna make imageView centre horizontally use in ImagView view
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
above line of code will not work with separate linear layout for ImageView. If you are gonna use separate layout for ImageView anyway, use below line of code inside that linearlayout
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
Note: sorry I'm not able to leave a comment.
Try this for your ImageView:
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:scaleType="centerInside"
android:src="#android:drawable/btn_minus" />
I think you missed scaleType of ImageView, Follow the steps to make your image center
1. Add attribute android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal" to show ImageView in center.
2. Set ImageView layout_width="match_parent" and
layout_height="#dimen/fixed_height"
==> height will be fixed but width will automatically adjust
according to device size
3. and set scaleType="fitEnd" or scaleType="fitCenter"
==> fitEnd is ( Scale the image from the end of the container ) and
possible to have space on top
if image is different each time.
==> fitCenter is (Scale the image from center) and possibility to
have space in top and bottom
Example:
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/cover_image"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="#dimen/fixed_height"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:scaleType="fitEnd" />

I'm struggling with making a coordinator layout work. Can someone help me with this?

Those two text views will appear in the design tab if you can notice. But the problem is you haven't specified any constraints as to their placement like you have done for your other views. Place constraints to position them on screen where you want it to for example set left, right,top and bottom margins or align it below some images you already have.Hope that helps.
This is what I'm trying to achieve:
However, I don't know how I can tell the left hand side view to grow to at least a minimum height, but also be as the right view. This is what I get when I set height to 'match_parent' and a 'minHeight':
As you can see for the first item the images view is cropped. When I use 'wrap_content', everything is shown from both right and left views, but I can't get the design I want (chart to be put at the bottom, with empty space between images):
What am I missing? This is the XML layout used for list items:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/list_item_main"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:padding="4dp">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/list_item_left_layout"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:minHeight="98dp"
android:orientation="vertical">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/avatar"
android:layout_width="40dp"
android:layout_height="40dp"
android:src="#drawable/avatar"/>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/list_item_overlay_layout"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:gravity="bottom"
android:orientation="vertical">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/chart"
android:layout_width="40dp"
android:layout_height="58dp"
android:src="#drawable/chart"/>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/item_text"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:maxLines="8"
android:paddingLeft="8dp"
android:paddingRight="8dp"/>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
You can use following code for your design.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"

android:textColor="#android:color/darker_gray" />

You can use Imageview.setTranslationX() or ImageView.setTranslationY() to move chart Imageview to new position.
Making a layout expandable is explained in this article from the blog. here[enter link description here][1]

Hope it helps ..
I found a trick, thanks to Mayur's answer. This is not the solution, but I can use it as a workaround until I find the right way.
Calculate the minimum height of the left view, and set the
minHeight of the right view to it. As a result, if the text in the
right hand side is so small it will still use a minimum amount of
height.
Set the height of the left layout to match_parent. Now this
view will expand to fill all the available space if the right view
grows to provide room for bigger text.
This is how it will look like:
And here is the code changes I had to make:
$ diff -U 5 list_item_layout_original.xml list_item_layout.xml
--- list_item_layout_original.xml 2015-12-03 09:13:35.000000000 +1100
+++ list_item_layout.xml 2015-12-03 09:11:42.000000000 +1100

<TextView
android:id="#+id/item_text"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"

+ android:minHeight="98dp"
android:maxLines="8"
android:paddingLeft="8dp"
android:paddingRight="8dp"/>
</LinearLayout>
I'm targeting API level 21 and min is also 21 (I support Lollipop only for now, it's a pet project to learn).
I'm having problems with a custom ListView item layout. Here is my XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/test_list_item_icon"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_marginEnd="10dp"
android:background="#FF0000"
android:src="#drawable/ic_test"
tools:ignore="ContentDescription"/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/test_list_item_name"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toEndOf="#id/test_list_item_icon"
android:textSize="50sp"/>
</RelativeLayout>
And here is what it looks like (the icon's red background color is only to see how big the actual view is):
I would like the image view to behave like the following: take up the available vertical space at the 'start'/left of the layout, have the image scale proportionally, and have the width be grown so that the image can be fully shown, like this (pardon my gimp skills):
Is it possible?
Try this for your ImageView
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/test_list_item_icon"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_marginEnd="10dp"
android:background="#FF0000"
android:src="#drawable/ic_test"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:scaleType="fitXY"
tools:ignore="ContentDescription"/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/test_list_item_name"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toEndOf="#id/test_list_item_icon"
android:textSize="50sp"/>
</RelativeLayout>
In the end I decided to create one more icon size, xxxhdpi, and it all looks nice now.
Many thanks to #corsair992 for information about the bug in one of the comments.
HI wujek the reason for your problem is you set height as wrap content for your relative layout . so it will take the textview's height as its height .then image view will use this as its height .so change relative layout height to match parent. Please try and let me know thanks
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"

try this
if u want to image should capture imageview size use background insted src.
if red background is mandatory use another relative layout as parent for imageview.
hope it works fo u..

I am solving a problem with image and text in one scroll view. The main problem is, that I get different image height from server side . But the place with image should be all the time same.
Now the height of image place is dynamic. The text should be scrollable with the image.
Is there any possibility how to make the image height static?
Thank you!

If you declare the ImageView with a fixed width and height it will remain static all the time.
Try something like:
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
/>
Put this ImageView inside a ScrollView and ofcourse put your TextView inside the same ScrollView.
you can use layout weights for your linearlayout. Set the width to 0 and let the weight determine actual size. Setting weight to 0.33 each gives each images 1/3 of the screen.
Or you could set one to 0.5 and the others to 0.25 each or whatever makes sense for your app.
Set the 3 images as:
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/article_image_back"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.33"
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical"
android:src="#drawable/sipka_l" />
I tried many times to draw 2 Relative layout aligned horizontally and divided in half screen.
I design the image with paint to explain a bit better what i mean.
Any suggestion?
Another way to accomplish the same task without needing to use a LinearLayout is to put a center-aligned "shim" in the middle of the parent layout, then align other elements to it. If you set the half-width element's width to match_parent, but align both their left and right sides, they'll end up shrinking themselves to fit.
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context="com.example.EqualWidthExample" >
<!-- An invisible view aligned to the center of the parent. Allows other
views to be arranged on either side -->
<View
android:id="#+id/centerShim"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:visibility="invisible"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"/>
<!--Set width to match_parent sets maximum width. alignParentLeft aligns
the left edge of this view with the left edge of its parent. toLeftOf
sets the right edge of this view to align with the left edge of the
given view. The result of all three settings is that this view will
always take up exactly half of the width of its parent, however wide
that may be. -->
<Button
android:id="#+id/btLeft"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/centerShim"
android:text="Left Button" />
<!--Same deal, but on the right -->
<Button
android:id="#+id/btRight"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/centerShim"
android:layout_below="#+id/tvLeft"
android:text="Right Button" />
</RelativeLayout>
You can put these 2 RelativeLayouts inside a LinearLayout with horizontal orientation, then use the weight for both RelativeLayouts. This will divide the LinearLayout in 2 equal parts.
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:baselineAligned="false">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1">
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1">
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
now you can do it easily using PercentRelativeLayout
<android.support.percent.PercentRelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:padding="16dp"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<Button
android:id="#+id/button"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:text="Button"
app:layout_widthPercent="50%"/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/button2"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_toRightOf="#id/button"
android:text="Button 2"
app:layout_widthPercent="50%"/>
</android.support.percent.PercentRelativeLayout>
don't forget to add the gradle dependency
dependencies {
compile 'com.android.support:percent:25.3.1'
}
code in github
Update
PercentRelativeLayout is Deprecated since API level 26.0.0
You could use an non-recommended structure with nested wieghts
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:baselineAligned="false"
android:weightSum="5">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"

I see 4 relativelayouts in your drawing...?
If you mean the two in the middle put them into one LinearLayout (horizontal orientation), let all of them have a width of match_parent and give both relative layouts a weight of 1
