Management web-app and mobile version - android

I am building a management web application based on php + mysql, developed with CakePhp framework.
Now I have been commissioned to develop the mobile version, mainly for android and ios devices (no windows, until now...)
leaving apart that right now i have to study from scratch mobile apps development, the questions are:
I figured out that mobile version of the app cannot be written in php...i know that android is based upon java, but what about ios?
it seems that I have to develop the mobile twice (waiting for windows os request...), so the second question is if there is a tool that could help to write once and to port everywhere (it seems the original java definition...)

Cake, even early version of it, takes to themes very gracefully. Just add to your existing website a mobile-friendly template, customized a bit for your brand look, and you won't need to learn a thing about mobile apps.

Can i build an android and ios app with jquery mobile

Please, am a web developer. I just built a web app for a school to manage their results and fees.
Now, i intend to build an app on android and ios so its 'easier' for both staff and students to get notifications and interact better.
Is JQuery mobile the asnwer?
Thanks for your reply
jQuery Mobile doesn't create an application for Android nor for iOS, it only makes websites look better on said platforms.
To create a real, native, application for Android you should use Android Studio. To do the same for iOS you need XCode and MAC OS X.
But, if you prefer to write websites, Apache Cordova does what you need. Allows you to create apps for any platform using your usual HTML, CSS and Javascript.
I'll drop the link here so you can check it out.
https://cordova.apache.org/
Another approach is creating a basic Android and iOS app that simply opens a web page (your website), but it is most of the time lacking in performance. If this last approach interests you, just look up "WebView" for Android, "UIWebView" for iOS (Obviously you'll need Android Studio and XCode)
EDIT
This is an old answer, now a ton of different technologies exist to build multiplatform applications, without even losing out on performance (for example, see react-native)
If you have already built the app using JQuery mobile and want to make it into an app I recommend looking at Cordova (PhoneGap) https://cordova.apache.org/
For notifications etc I found https://www.pushwoosh.com/ to have the best integration

Start making IOS app from Android app

I've been working hard to finish making my Android app, and now it's time to make an IOS version too.
I've noticed that Mac computer is needed to start with IOS apps, so I came into few questions since I don't have any Mac device in my home:
1) What is the most affordable developement enviroment for IOS developement?
2) Is there any tool or guide for Android --> IOS?
3) What is Xamarin? Does it allow to build apps for android & IOS together? and how effective it will be since I already made my Android app via Android Studio?
Looking for answers,
Thanks in advance.
I did not find answer to this questions in the web. what I found is 5 years old aged irrelevant answers.
congratulations for your new app.
1) You can have a look for OS X servers http://www.macincloud.com but in the long term I think it would be time and money saving to just buy a second hand Mac computer or a Mac Mini for 500 dollars or so.
2) They use different syntax and different APIs, so you won't be able to reuse most of your knowledge, I'd recommend you to have a look to the iTunes University Stanford videos.
3) Xamarin is a mobile cross platform framework, the main advantage is that your code is converted into native one, so the final touch uses real native components. In that case you have to use C# for the development and, of course, redo the whole project.

mobile simple application, drag and drop

i didn't want to ask a question, but i don't have any solution at all.
i've not seen such a kind of problem. i decided to write applications on mobile platforms (android and iOS), but nothing found.
lots of tutorials and documentations
lots of samples
lots of libraries and frameworks
but nothing found... i'm fed up, still looking for difference between mobile web application and desktop. i wanted to write simple drag and drop calculator, searched and found phonegap + jQM. first, i installed eclipse + ADT + cordova and created project. when i started writing, i decided to use jQuery (cause i needed drag and drop effects), and suddenly found that i needed applaud plugin and so on... as i understand applaud app and native phonegap app are differenet. when i searhed, i found that phonegap + jQM are web apps and needed NET to start application. I don't want to write web app, i only want 3 - 4 line to undestand what' going on... what is difference between web and client app in mobile and how i can write simple drag and drop calculator NOT WEB. i'm really fed up with these tutorials and documentations, i only need correct starting way and then i will do myself. damn, i'm tired...
A web app is an HTML5, JavaScript, CSS app running in a mobile browser typically published on a web server but can be run locally on a device without a network connection in some cases.
A native app is downloaded and installed on the mobile device and must be published to an external app store of some sort. There are also hybrid apps that combine both characteristics.
Native and hybrid apps have more complete access to the device platform and can be more performant than web apps but require more specialized language skill (Objective C, Java, C#).
Web apps can be as simple as a web site displayed on a mobile device and require much more broadly utilized skills such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.
The requirements of your drag and drop calculator are not specified but I would suggest that a very simple web app could meet your needs.
This IBM article might be overkill for you but it also happens to discuss the offline web app option. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/web/library/wa-offlineweb/index.html

Rearchitecting existing Desktop application to technology that support multiple platforms

We recently confronted a challenge where we got to port an Existing Desktop (.NET 3.5) application (Which communicates a WCF service and a Webservice) to the technology that can meet following:
Should support IPAD
Should Support IPhone
should support Android
Should Support Window Mobile
Should be on WEB based, so that can run on DT.
Optimized in Performance.
Cool UI.
With so many technologies available to support them all. Its become a challenge for us to finalize one upon other. So far, we are thinking about a Web based application in ASP.NET MVC-4 (As we are .NET engineers). We are open for suggestions.
Thanks for your suggestions and time you devote in helping me.
Regards
Sumeet
Take a look into the MONO Project it is a open source project that aims to bring the .net framework to linux/mac os Mono Website mobile development does come with a licensing fee in order to deploy to a device or distribute the application tho there is also phonegap which lets you use javascript and html5 markup to create native cross platform applications for mobile platforms PhoneGap Website

Cross platform non-browser development for tablet PCs?

I have to develop an app for the Ipad. It has to be non-browser based. That's a requirement and I can't change it.
I think it likely that the app would be useful on other tablet PC types and have a good chance of a second app which requires IPad and Android at a minimum; Windows and Linux would also be useful.
If it makes any differences these are "desktop" apps for tablet PCs and it is not envisaged that there will be any handphone development.
Is there a “Grand Unifying Theory” of cross-platform desktop app development? Is there a good IDE, preferably FOSS? I'd rather code C++ or Java and am less keen on Ruby or Python (through lack of experience) but would accept if there is no alternative.
I need a GUI builder, something like Borland Delphi or MSVC or the Eclipse Android plugin and I need a way of executing different code on different platforms (#ifdef Android … etc)
Any ideas, or should I just go ahead and code the current project for Ipad only and stick to browser based HTML5 + CSS3 with Jquery/Ajax for cross platform apps (the problem being that some will need to execute native system calls, like en/de-crypting a file and at least one app has to work in “local mode” if there is so internet access, so I guess I would have to bundle a web server (Apache) if I go browser based (in order to serve the web pages), which would not be necessary with a “desktop app”.
Any recommended IDEs, Web sites? Books? Thanks
The "grand unifying theory" is that core business logic should reside in the cloud; that allows your iOS and Android implementations to be just a thin GUI on top of this shared logic. Unfortunately, there isn't really a way to reuse the GUI, and even if you did, it would go against the intuition of users on one or both platforms, since you wouldn't be using the paradigms of those specific platforms.
Google App Engine provides a way for implementing your core business logic in Java on top of Google's cloud computing infrastructure at reasonable costs (development is free, cost is proportionate to usage, and one can put caps on how much one is willing to pay). There is an Eclipse plugin for developing App Engine applications. When developing for Android, you will similarly want to use Eclipse (there is a plugin specifically for Android development), although the Android SDK can be used just from the commandline (which is good for setting up a continuous build and test system).
For iOS, you will want to use the standard Xcode and the iOS SDK. Xcode is an IDE, but it is possible to build Xcode projects directly from the commandline using the xcodebuild command (also good for continuous building). The standard language for iOS applications is Objective-C.
You should take a look at jQuery Mobile. I used it to cross develop between Android and Playbook. I know that it also does iOS.
Maybe for you the downside is that you have to program in JavaScript.
