I am very new to android, and I basically have almost no experience. Recently my client got an idea where he wants to have a custom map (in .png/.jpg/.jpeg format) on which, using GPS only, will be displayed his location using a marker, and location where he is supposed to get. Those two markers have to be connected with a "path", that will be like some sort of navigation from one marker to another. One of the requests is that it must be done without any usage of Google maps. My question here is - is that even possible to be done like this?
The only idea that I got is to get coordinate from GPS, make a proportion pixels on the image to coordinates and put a marker on where the user is supposed to be. Is there a better option than this?

Im readig for the last two days and not sure about this, would like to know if there is any way to read in my program (Android app) where the user is looking with the mobile (For example: User is looking to northeast with this degrees).
There is any API to do this or I have to program it with the compass and accelerometer of the mobile?

im new to augmented reality but what is meant by the term marker ? i have done a web search and it says the marker is a place where content will be shown on the mobile device but im not clear still. Here is what i found out so far:
Augmented reality is hidden content, most commonly hidden behind
marker images, that can be included in printed and film media, as long
as the marker is displayed for a suitable length of time, in a steady
position for an application to identify and analyze it. Depending on
the content, the marker may have to remain visible.
There are a couple of types of marker in Vuforia, there are ones you define yourself, after putting them in to they CMS online, ones that you can create at run time and set markers that just have information around the edge. When the app sees the marker it will work out the pose (position and rotation) of the marker and apply that to any 3d content you want to load, that way as you move around date marker the content stays in the same relative position to the marker.
And one final heads up, this is much easier in Unity 3D than using the iOS or Android native versions. I've done quite a lot and it saves a lot of time.
Marker is nothing but a target for your Augmented Reality app. Whenever you see your marker through the AR CAMERA, the models of your augmented reality app will be shown on!
It will be easy to understand if you develop your first app in augmented reality! :)

AR markers can be real-world objects or locations that trigger associated actions in your AR system when identified in sight, and usually result in some action, like displaying annotations (à la Rap Genius for objects around you).
Example:
Imagine you are gazing through your AR glasses. (You will see both what is displayed on the lenses, if anything, as well as the world around you.)
As you drive by a series of road cones closing the rightmost lane ahead, the AR software analyzes the scene and identifies several road cones in formation. This pattern is programmed to launch traffic notification software and, in conjunction with your AR's built-in GPS, obtains the latest information regarding what is going on here and what to expect.
In this way, the road cone formation is a marker: something particular and pre-defined triggers some action: obtaining and providing special information regarding your surroundings.
I am displaying an are of about 15km x 15km in a Google Map v2 in Android. In this area i have about 20 objects, displayed as markers. By clicking buttons the user can center the map on the different objects. This is achieved by animating the camera of the map to the position of the object.
However this is stuttering and insanely laggy due to google maps loading the map data (streetnames, background) while animating the camera to the next object.
Since it looks really really bad to have the camera stutter like this on a high end smartphone my question is this:
Is there a possibility to "preload" this 15 x 15 km area so that the animations can run smoothly over map content cached in memory?
Or is there another way to prevent the camera animations from stuttering?
Since all user interaction takes place in this 15 x 15km area there is no need for reloading all map data whenever the camera is animated.

Unfortunately there is no way to have map data preloaded when using Google Maps Android API v2.
The data is only cached on SD when user goes into that region.
You may also try using a different map provider.
I am new for Augmented Reality though I know Android development.
I am trying to create an app whose main aim is to overlay the camera preview with some image if the device camera is pointing to a particular building or place. The camera preview will be overlaid with some image if and only if camera is pointing to correct building and correct direction. The overlay image & its related data will be uploaded from back-end. I have gone through mixar but it is not giving the correct solution.
In this I am not getting the Elevation / altitude concept. From where I will get this. Which opensource sdk is better for this app? How to crack this application?
For altitude you should forget it. The altitude return by GPS is terrible. Just crossing from one side of the street to the other side, the altitude returned by GPS could be different by 50 meter. Also, the direction of the back camera using sensors will not be accurate enough for buildings close together. If you restrict your app for known buildings or places then you can adjust using some image recognition but still it is very hard.

I don't know of any opensource sdk but I used Wikitude SDK which is quite useful for you implementation.The main advantage about wikitude sdk is that you can use your own server for back-end data. Which is not possible with the other alternative that is layar. And #Hoan is right about getting altitude information from GPS data is really inacurate but you can give it a go as the inaccuracy is only visible if you are really near the Point of Interest. It works okay for a distance greater than 250 meters or so(not confirmed). The only problem you might get is from the compass deflections which are really great when you are near a high EM field or near metals. But that's a chance you'd have to take and nothing can be done about it.

We are developing an indoor application on iOS and Android using MapKit and Cloudmade for the mapping.
The mapping we have should be able to work both online and offline. My mapping expect is having troubles on how to make the map rotate to face the same way the user is facing.
So we are able to do real-time tracking and display it on a pre-plotted route on the map, but we need to have the direction the person is walking as displayed on the map to face the same direction the user is facing.
How can we do this ?
