using android 2.3.3 and Android API 25.
having 3 activities activity_main , activity_details and activity_settings.
I've used android studio auto generating for creating these activities as blank activity with fragment, So manifest code is generated automatically.
activity_main and activity_details have menu option Settings that's for opening the activity_settings.
clicking on Settings option menu for activity_details works and opens activity_settings but not working for activity_main
and here is my code:

I am trying to get an action bar within my android app to show up with icons. No matter what I do, I only see the overflow icon with a dropdown, while I want to see the Home and Logout icons next to each other on the action bar menu. I have read through most posts on SO for a solution but am unable to find a solution. Can anyone please help ?

This means that you are using the native action bar, not the backport offered by appcompat-v7. In that case, replace the app: prefixes in your menu resource with android:, and you will have better luck.

That is surprising. Your question is the first time I have ever seen anyone use that theme. I didn't even know it existed until I looked it up as part of checking your question. Most likely, you will want to use more modern themes.
I'm attempting to write unit tests for a very simple app. Here is the menu_main.xml

I have unit tests that descend from ActivityInstrumentationTestCase2, one of which checks the menu_main.xml.

R.id.action_settings obviously exists because the code compiles, but when the tests run, they do not find item. They do find elements from activity_main.xml. I've tried getting the action bar via activity.getActionBar(), it is null. I thought maybe the action bar was owned by the application, not the activity, but Applications don't even have getActionBar().
How do I find menu items so I can test them in unit tests?
I think you have to declare activity class with theme in Manifest file which have action bar default like..

I always use the same menu, and sometimes icons fits on the ActionBar and sometimes not. I don't get why it is happening.
It's nothing to do about the size because it has space for fitting.
Any idea of why it is happening will be appreciated.
Actually try displaying only icon without text..because ActionBar allocates some fixed space in it for App Title even though it is small..so in small phones it cant display two icons....and even change order in Category to set the same to both the items..

I added "android:showAsAction="always|withText" and it worked. Not really sure why is it working, something related with support libraries I guess. Anyway it gives an XML error but it compiles and works.

In my case when I enter in the activity for the first time the menu items don't show in any fragment. If I rotate the device everything works fine.

I am using ActionBarSherlock to implement ActionBar for both Pre/post versions of Android HoneyComb.
My problem is that when I tap top-left icon on Android version 4.0.4, it did not respond.

So now when I test the application on Pre-HoneyComb version, the Up arrow is never shown which is correct since ABS can't respond at all if icon was tapped to navigate up.
But when I tried the application on Post-HoneyComb version like 4.1 on Emulator, the Up arrow is shown and when I tapped it, it works as expected and navigates up normally.
My problem is that when I tried the application on Android 4.0.4 emulator , the Up arrow is shown as expected but when I tapped it, it do nothing
I have found the fix:
Simply I should avoid set the Icon Home as Up using xml attribute: homeAsUp but instead I should have used setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true) explicitly as follows:

Apologies for what I am sure is a common question, but after Googling for a while it seems I don't know the proper Android term for what I want and so am stuck.
I would like to know how to work with the main pop-up menu associated with a view...that is, if you are sitting at some activity doing nothing and press the menu key on the phone, how to work with that menu that commonly opens on many apps containing "Settings", "Exit", etc.
I am not sure what this is called, but if someone can point me to the appropriate portion of the SDK, that would be appreciated. Also, if someone knows how to work this menu within the context of the Eclipse ADT plugin, that'd be great, too.

As CaseyB says, it's just called a menu.
For a quick start on using it, you could create a subfolder in the res folder of an eclipse project and call it "menu" add in some xml for the view, and the call a MenuInflator from the onCreateOptionsMenu function.
Ok, that might be a bit confusing, so i've included some sample code that should get you started. This code should make it so when you press the menu button you can select one of two new activities to get loaded.
In Main Activity add:

It's just called the menu. Here is a tutorial to get you started. Things get a little weird in 3.0+ but once you get the basics down it shouldn't be too hard to pick up.
On versions prior to 3.0, these are menus. Menus are being replaced by the ActionBar in the more recent versions of Android.
