I have a single activity wear application with singleInstance set as launchMode.
When I swipe right or put the palm over the watch, the application goes to the background (pause/stop), then when I tap on its icon it opens again (resume) but it shows a new main activity and not the original one.
I would like the app to only have 1 main activity.
I did unsuccessfully try other values for the launchMode and I also unsuccessfully tried to set flags.
I do not post the code since it is just simple wear app with a TextView and a Button on the main activity. When the button is pressed a counter increases and updates the text. When the app resumes the counter shows zero as if the button was never pressed.
You lose your data since the old activity gets destroyed when going to the background and gets restored when coming back. This is the normal behavior.
When you want to keep your data, you need to save and restore it e.g. save in onSaveInstanceState() and restore it in onCreate().

So my scenario is as such.
Let's say there is a MainActivity, which only job is to start, call installSplashScreen().setKeepOnScreenCondition { true } to show the Splash screen using the new backward compatible APIs, and then after checking some state it does startActivity(SomeActivity); finish()
Now we're on the SomeActivity and if we press the home button, the app is gone on the background. Then if we click on the launched icon, the SomeActivity is launched correctly, and the MainActivity's onCreate is never called, therefore the splash screen does not show again, and the SomeActivity shows instantly.
But if instead of pressing the home button, we press the back button, and the app is backgrounded that way, then when we click on the launcher icon, the MainActivity's oncreate is called again, and the splash screen icon flashes for a tiny fraction too making it look jarring.
My question is, does this sound like it's some wrong configuration on my part, or am I stuck with this behavior as long as I am not on a single activity architecture?
You are confused. Pressing the BACK button does not "send the app to the background". The default behaviour of the BACK button (assuming that you don't override this and provide your own behaviour) is to finish the current Activity. Normally this will take the user to the previous Activity in the current task. In your case, there is no other Activity in the task stack, so the current task is empty. This may appear to the user as "the app is sent to the background", but in reality there is nothing in the background. Your app's task is empty and so it is gone.
When the user then taps the app icon on the HOME screen or taps on the app's task in the list of recent tasks, there is no existing task to bring to the foreground, so the app is started again by creating a new task and launching the root Activity (in your case MainActivity) into the newly created task.
If you want the BACK button to just put your app into the background (instead of calling finish() on SomeActivity, which is the default behaviour) then just override onBackPressed() in SomeActivity and do this instead:
moveTaskToBack(true);
It seems like there is no solution to what I am facing as long as the Activity I want to resume to is not the Launcher activity.
From the the docs:
"Root launcher activities are activities that declare an Intent filter with both ACTION_MAIN and CATEGORY_LAUNCHER. These activities are unique because they act as entry points into your app from the app launcher and are used to start a task.
System behavior on Android 12 and higher
The system moves the activity and its task to the background instead of finishing the activity. This behavior matches the default system behavior when navigating out of an app using the Home button or gesture."
Reading the docs about the new back behavior on Android 12 and onwards tells us that pressing back when you got nothing else on the stack will act as if you pressed the home button.
There's a big exception here, and that is that when you re-open the application, if the one you just popped was not the launcher activity, it will then still need to launch that launcher activity and can't resume from where you left off in a hot state, exactly the reason why I am seeing the splash screen again.
So I think my best bet is to either ignore this for now, or fix my app to be a single-activity app, or at least keep the launcher activity be the top-level one that you exit the app from by pressing back
To indicate a couple of examples, if one wants to experience what I mean, the reproduction steps are to:
Open the app
Press the back button which will send you out of the app to the home screen
Click on the app icon again
As of today, apps like Google Photos, and Google Podcasts don't show the splash again. In contrast, apps like Google Maps, Twitter, Spotify do show the splash again for a brief second.
to call the launcher activity every time you have to clear the stack that means you have to use a flag in your manifest to tell your app not to keep activity in background try android:launchMode="singleTask" inside your activity tag in manifest the activity that you want to be killed everytime you go to background, and as far as how much time splash should be showing you can use timer for that after the timer is finished then your someActivity will be called.
I have an activity, DogActivity, with a slider. When the user slides view PawsView to a certain degree, I start another activity, CatActivity, using startActivity(intent). If the user clicks the back button, normally the user returns to DogActivity. Here is my problem: if in Developer options I set Do not keep activities then when the user clicks the back button and thus returns to DogActivity, the slider is not asserted and so PawsView is back to its original position; however, if I don't have that option selected, upon returning to DogActivity the slider is still asserted (the sliding already occurred).
Since I don't want to depend on the user selecting or deselecting Do not keep activities, I need to do this programmatically. So does anyone know how to do this? I have tried putting the appropriate code inside onResume but that has no effect. It's as if finishing CatActivity has no effect on DogActivity. BTW, the view I am using to display PawsView is a custom view.
I already tried using a handler with postDelayed to pull PawsView back to normal, but the handler always executes before the startActivity is executed. If on the other hand I start a proper Thread to run the call to close the slider, I get an error about the wrong thread trying to change the layout.
Another way of asking the question may be: How do I force onResume to be called even when Do not keep activities is NOT selected on a user's device.
You could try to launch CatActivity using startActivityForResult and then handle the result in onActivityResult and do the necessary setup from there. It's sort of like forcing onResume.
I have activities in sequence as Activity A calling Activity B,When I am on Activity B I press Home button and start another Application (for example Map). If i stay on this second application for a long time say 5-10 minutes and then press Home Button again and choose to Start my application again, then Activity B is started again and works fine. But when i Press Back key - I return to my Activity A again (which is also correct) but it shows a Blank Screen. Ideally in correct version it should show me Acitivty A with the XML data is ListView form.
Alternatively, in the above description, when the other Map Application is started and if the user stay on it only for 1-2 minutes then the above problem doesnt not occur.
Can anyone suggest a solution on the same.
Is it that i need to check in Activity B whether Activity A is still there in Activity Stack (How do i do the same) and If its not in my Activity stack then re-create it.
I tried doing alwaysRetainTaskstate in my Android manifest file for Activity A. But it doesnt work at all
You don't have to do any of that, Android takes care of the technicalities for you - it will recreate your Activity A.
You just need to remember to save A's state when B is opened (take a look at Activity.onSaveInstanceState). When A is restarted, your saved state will be passed to onCreate.
You should really read about Activity Lifecycle
This should help.
My Application have 20 activities. Here i want to implement the how to exit from the application when you click on the button(like Logout). it means if you click on the menu button any where of our application then it shows the one button. if click on that then directly comes out from the application. how to implement it.
thanks
Well naresh you can do something like that
first finish the activity from which you are closing application this.finish(); secondly and most impotantly always set a flag i.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
this clear top when you switch from one activity to another activity and as you know every activity is kept in stack to so this flag remove old activity from top and push new activity in top so around your whole application only one activity is kept in stack
and if this does not work put the whole application in background by avtivityname.moveTaskToBack(); this will move your whole app in back ground but only one drawback when you start your activity it will show your that activity from which you have moved back
System.exit(0);
should work, don't forget Java common functions work on android, there isn't only the android library!
As for the button being in the menu in every activity, you could create a class derived from Activity which creates and handles the menu properly, and make every other activity inherit that derived activity.
First finish the activity from which you are closing application: this.finish();. Secondly and most impotantly always set a flag i.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP); This clears top when you switch from one activity to another activity. As you know every activity is kept in a stack to so this flag removes old activity from the top and pushes new activity to the top so around your whole application only one activity is kept in the stack.
If this does not work, put the whole application in background with avtivityname.moveTaskToBack();. This will move your whole app to the background. One drawback: when you start your activity it will show your that activity from which you have moved back.
I have two buttons on my application. One button starts a new Game (lets say solitair).
When ever this button is pressed it will always start a new game
My problem is that I would like a second button to go back to the game that has already started if the user clicks back.
How do I go about recalling that activity that has already been created
Thanks
I assume that the game is from a third party. As I see it you don't even need second button. Just click the first one again and you will get back to the game.
If the game intercepts Back it may intentionally destroy it's state so there is no way to jump back to the place that you were before hitting Back.
You have to save the state of the activity
onSaveInstanceState() and onRestoreInstanceState() are used to handle the activity state
onSaveInstanceState() method gets called for an activity when user leaves the activity. Note this method is only called when activity is present in the History state and user can come back to the activity.
onRestoreInstanceState() restores the state of the views.
see the following link
How to manage activity state
You have to read manual about activity stack
Your application can has more than one task and more than one activity back stack
