I want to get a reference to item inside of the layer-list for changing some attributes programmatically, But I can't see any difference and seems it does not work.

This way, if you already have a reference to your LinearLayout you do the whole color change in just a single line. And you don't even need to call setBackground() for the change to show!

The easiest way is to set this background in the TextView:
android:background="?attr/selectableItemBackground"
And if you want to set a different color for the background, set that attr as foreground instead of background.

In case of complex ProgressBar like this,
use ClipDrawable.
NOTE : I've not used ProgressBar here in this example. I've achieved
this using ClipDrawable by clipping image with Animation.
A Drawable that clips another Drawable based on this Drawable's current level value. You can control how much the child Drawable gets clipped in width and height based on the level, as well as a gravity to control where it is placed in its overall container. Most often used to implement things like progress bars, by increasing the drawable's level with setLevel().
NOTE : The drawable is clipped completely and not visible when the level is 0
and fully revealed when the level is 10,000.

I'm trying to retrieve a RotateDrawable defined in XML but it causes an excetion when I call getDrawable(). Here are my XML and java files:

Can anyone tell me how I'm supposed to get a RotateDrawable from XML?
You have an extra > in line 2 from the bottom of myrotate.xml
android:pivotY="50%">>
Remove it.
