I just installed Android Studio 2.3.3 and I followed the steps given on Tutorials Point website for this installation. The install process was successful. I then created a new project as shown in the screen below. In the install instructions, it was shown that I will see the mockup as shown in screenshot below. However, it does not show the mobile mockup in design view. What am I missing? Or how do I get the mockup in design view?
AFAIK, viewing the XML design preview of your app with a mobile device frame around it is deprecated for the latest stable versions of Android Studio.
Please Follow below steps:
View -> Tool Windows -> Preview.
Select Preview.

This week I updated Android Studio till 4.0 version.
Its new LayoutInspector certainly has many useful features, it's great!
but in previous versions of Android Studio i had the opportunity to open a few tabs of different screens using layout inspector.
Does anybody know how to do it in Android Studio 4.0?
Because now in version 4.0 LayoutIspector has another view in separate window and no any tabs.
Thank you very much!
Finally i've figured out my problem.
In fact Live Layout Inspector of version 4.0 provides complete information about app's UI structure and hierarchy for emulator/device with API level 29 or higher.
But if you need the previous version's view of Layout Inspector, then you just have to disable Live Layout Inspector:
File -> Settings -> Experimental, and check the box next to Disable Live Layout Inspector.
At developer.android.com I found a tutorial called "Build a simple user interface". Unfortunately, it is based on an older version of Android Studio. It tells the user to open activity_main.xml. If one does this, the user cannot find the right icons in the toolbar. I searched and someone said open content_main.xml instead. This indeed posts the right icons in the toolbar, but as one continues in the tutorial, more and more errors appear. My question is: Is there a newer Android Studio User Interface tutorial that is appropriate for the latest Android Studio, version 3.6.1?
I really want to learn how to build interfaces via Android Studio and not clumsily play directly with XML code. Thanks for any ideas!

I am very new to android apps, I do mostly VS2013, and I was just trying to do a hello world or anything basic. Why is there a tiny "hello world" on my design for my .xml file, but the button I added shows on the AVD? I'm really confused.
EDIT: To clarify, this is a brand new project. My question specifically is how can I make sure I can see on the design/text tabs what is going to be on my emulator? All I have done is drag/drop from the Palette onto the screen, and see nothing. What should I be doing instead?
The design device is the same as my AVD.
All: The solution was an issue with the rending, and is apparently a bug with the newest version of the Studio. This link I found had the information and solutions to help me with it:
Rendering problems in Android Studio v 1.1 / 1.2
By saying visual I mean if there is a sort of option of seeing how the app might look on your phone while developing it using android developer tools kit downloaded from android website? I hope you got the question clear
Yes. You are building the layout with XML.
While you are developing you can switch between XML view and a graphical view.
This is in eclipse. Android studio hase something similar.
There is an layout preview in Eclipse where you could choose from a variety of predefined "devices". Also you could add your own.
I installed Mono for Android with the intention of using Visual Studio 2010 to design android apps. I am able to compile and deploy applications, but I am not able to view the layout designer. When I double click on an .axml file it opens in source view and there is no context menu option such as "View in designer." I am able to use MonoDevelop to create the layout, but I shouldn't have to do that.
Here are some screen caps:
Any tips?
It seems to simple but right clicking on the Main.axml in Visual Studio and select and choose Open with. Then select Android Designer should do the trick.
Despite that Android Designer can be set as Default it appears not to be working like that. I should say that's a BUG in VS and/or Monofor Android.
Are you shure to have the latest Mono for Android installed? (Version 4.2.4)
The Open With Dialog should have an entry "Android Designer".
Select this now and click "Set as Default".
Did a full uninstall, reinstall and reboot.
At first it didn't seem to have fixed it - my existing hello world project still wouldn't open the designer.
I tried creating a new project and ta-da all good now! Very odd.
I've very pleased to have gui designer. It really helps level the learning curve when learning a new platform - nice work Xamarin.
I did 3 installs until it finally took. I uninstalled then reinstalled and it still didn't work. I then just did a repair and it finally worked. Just keep reinstalling and you'll get it.
