Setting visibility of a view when a menu item is selected and when we are done with the menu item

I have implemented a menu item to search a list view. I need to make a view invisible when the menu item is selected. This is easily done with this code in my fragment:

I can't figure out how to set the visibility back when I am done with the search (I am using SearchView). I tried to use onOptionsMenuClosed (Menu menu) but that is not being called for some reason.

Try using setOnActionExpandListener():
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.your_menu, menu);
menu.findItem(R.id.action_search).setOnActionExpandListener(new MenuItem.OnActionExpandListener() {
#Override

public boolean onMenuItemActionCollapse(MenuItem item) {
addButton.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
return false; // change to true if `false` wont work for your case
}
});
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);

onMenuItemActionCollapse() will be called when SearchView is collapsed or closed.

How to handle back arrow event in a SearchView

How can I handle the click event on the back arrow in the searchview widget:
I tried this code but it doesn't work:
searchtollbar.setNavigationOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {

Log.d(TAG, "back arrow clicked");

also I tried this one:
MenuItemCompat.setOnActionExpandListener(item_search, new

The problem with the above code is that calling onMenuItemActionCollapse() method also executes onQueryTextChange() which is undesirable.
So some help please.

To handle that you have to override onOptionsItemSelected method.
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle item selection
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case android.R.id.home:

return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}

How can I remove the three dots to the right of my SearchView ?

How do you "deflate" menus in android?

I have a contextual action bar, where I have a setting called "DELETE". When I press that button I want the CAB menu to disappear.

I was thinking about calling the onDestroyActionMode() right after the _root.removeView(view);, but I don't know what arguments to pass in.

If you are trying to hide the item being selected, you can call
menuItem.setVisible(false);
Alternatively, if you want to remove all items from the menu, you can call
optionsMenu.clear();
in the onActionItemClicked() method.
You can save your menu to a field in your onCreateOptionsMenu method as follows:
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(final Menu menu) {
optionsMenu = menu
}

Call actionMode.finish(). This will invoke the onDestroyActionMode() callback.

his hook is called whenever an item in your options menu is selected.
The default implementation simply returns false to have the normal
processing happen (calling the item's Runnable or sending a message to
its Handler as appropriate). You can use this method for any items for
which you would like to do processing without those other facilities.
