We are starting to develop a Web App that can work in different devices and still be connected between them even if there is no internet connection, but a working local network.
We need to send notifications between devices in the same local network with no internet, and we would really like to develop a PWA, if not possible work with native mobile apps.
If anybody knows how to make Service Workers work this way, we would appreciate it.

I am working on a Phonegap application and I want a means by which two people with this app installed can share some information offline, but on the same network like a wifi or tethered hotspot.
I have tried to search the web for possible libraries or ways of doing it, but all I see are libraries that pass the data through their servers before sending it to the peer, meaning they must be online.
So please can someone point me to the right direction on how to do this or to the valid resources available.

I've used sockets-for-cordova for communicating between a cordova app and an Arduino. However, seeing as it's TCP it wouldn't support broadcasts - you'll need a UDP socket for that.
There is also cordova-plugin-chrome-apps-sockets-udp which does appear to support broadcasts. I've no experience with it though.
I am creating a multiplayer android game as a part of my coursework. This is my first game. I intended to allow users to connect to the game over a simple network. I don't want to use internet at all hence I wont be using the android game services. How do I go about this. I have no clue at all. I have tried various tutorials but all of them are using a central game server. I just want to create a simple Client - Server network. One user will host a game and others will join.
it's my first time answering a question here. I usually just read here in stackoverflow. I'm also currently working on my first game. It connects devices using wifi peer-to-peer or WifiDirect (without a wifi hotspot). It requires high version of android OS (4.0 or 4.1?) but I believe you can also try the other way on which the devices needs to connect in the same wifi hotspot for lower OS version requirements. The latter, I haven't tried yet.
After I connect the devices on the same network (peer-to-peer), I use sockets to exchange data between them. I use serializable objects for sending data. I don't know if it's the best way but it works for me.
My game can connect more than two players in wifi peer-to-peer. One device acts as the network owner (and also the game server).

Also, Sockets must be used with Threads so you also need to read about it if haven't.

I finally got the solution and made the Android application. Simply used java socket programming. It works on Hotspot. This works on client - server framework.

I want to send notification from one android device (android tv without bluetooth, telephony) to another android device (phone/tablet). Both are on same wifi network. Through the notification, I want to launch an app or open a page in phone/tablet browser.
I went through GCM messaging and also saw some options where we can have a kind of http server on the phone running but could not understand implementation.
Can someone help with idea and if possible, some piece of code as well.
As I need it for demo, so even any hack solution is fine for me :-)

Your best bet as a hacky solution is to do simple Socket connection between two devices. Since they are on same Wifi, it will be simpler and won't have any firewall restrictions.
Avoid GCM, it requires setting up a GCM Server and then complex registration. It also makes your solution dependent upon Internet connectivity & Google ofcourse.

Basically one device such as TV can be a socket listener. The phone/tablet can connect to that socket and then you can initiate a notification on either device based on your requirements and data exchange.
So I am developing an APP and I need to connect multiple android and multiple Iphone to send text data without any internet connection or service provider data network.
So one of the phone will have to act as a server to relay information between them. But the app will have to decide which phone will be the server and if a phone that is the server leaves the conversation then another phone will pickup as the server this will all be done with some smart programming but before I get there.
I know Android WiFi direct can do a one to many connection setup which makes it easy to connect android phone and accomplish the task between android phone only. But the problems comes when I need to connect Iphone with the android phones. Since the Iphone must be able to act as a server as well.
I would like to know a few things:
Can I connect Android and Iphone via WiFi Direct?
Can I connect Android and Iphone using Multipeer connectivity feature on Iphone?
Is there anyway to create a soft access point using Iphone? I know android can do this via WiFi direct feature.
If non of these can work can you suggest something.

I wonder though if both OS allow enough control over the WiFi transceiver if you couldn't just write an app that could what you are asking and just bypassing the built in software architecture all together. I would think Bluetooth would be too weak except in extremely dense device saturation environments, but just for proof of concept that could be another route to take. My guess though is that you just wouldn't get that level of control over any of the radios inside a phone through the current OS.
what is the best framework that I should use to make a remote control app for Android. What I want to do is something like Tony Fadel's app for Android and Iphone where you control your house thermostat temperature remotely with a smartphone app.
I was going to use sockets programming, but not sure if that is the best way. If it is then i will use it, but wanted some feedback before i get started.
If I make one android device the server and the other device the client I will still have to manually set the IP address every time I want to connect the client to the server.
I am trying to avoid having to make a web-app and having to make a php website to act as a server for this. Having to keep a server running is too much overhead. would rather make something like two android phones or tablets that can send message to each other over the internet or wifi router without too much setup and effort.
Would appreciate any ideas on this. I can't figure out how the nest thermostat works (http://www.nest.com/) but that is kind of the functionality that I am looking to copy. I wonder if they have to use a centralized server for all of the remote controls. If there is a way to do this peer to peer that would be great. that way all i would need is two Android tablets.
The other examples I can think of is VOIP like skype and google talk. I am sure these don't use a centralized server for voice calls. My needs are much more simple. no voice or video, only sending text messages from one android device to another over the internet. Each android device will probably be using wifi exclusively.
