I'm getting errors for not extending AppCompatActivity.
How do I solve this?
I've market with HERE the places the errors are found
Can I replace the "this" with something else?
I have seen that you can make your own toolbar , would that work?

you can see the errors in this picure
You are using SupportMapFragment, so try with
getActivity() or getContext ().
getActivity()- Return the Activity this fragment is currently associated with.
getContext () Returns the context the view is running in, through which it can access the current theme, resources, etc.
Example
Toast.makeText(getContext(), "permission denied", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

I am trying to display a users current location using the google map activity. when the activity is launched the google map is displayed as it should be, but there is no marker and the users current location is not gotten. The map displays a view over many different countries. After putting Toast messages in every method i realise onLocationChange is not being called, as no Toast appears for this method.

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
In order to display user location you should add:
mMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true);
on your onMapReady callback, there's no need to use a LocationRequest.
Be aware that you'll be able to get user position after your app has achieved location permissions. To do so you can follow this guide or use a third party library like easy permissions
After hours of research the answer was in front of me, the location settings were disabled in the phone settings. Witting this so the next person inst as stupid as me.

I'm sorry sir. this is my main activity code. i am facing an exception in my application, the exception is related to com.google.android.gms.location.LocationListner. And the error is
cannot be cast to com.google.android.gms.location.LocationListener
I searched the solution for this errors but no one does not help.
As from the dependencies you added in question, you are doing some mistakes,
First of all, if you are using Gradle v3.0 or above then use implementation instead of compile and testImplementation or androidTestImplementation instead of testCompile. compile and testCompile is deprecated now (Gradle v3.0 or above).
Second, is that you are not using same version or google-play-libraries, replace this,
compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-location:11.0.2'
with
implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-location:11.0.8'
Finally your dependencies looks like,
dependencies {
implementation fileTree(dir: 'libs', include: ['*.jar'])
implementation 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:26.1.0'
implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps:11.8.0'
implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-location:11.8.0'
testImplementation 'junit:junit:4.12'
testImplementation 'com.android.support.test:runner:1.0.1'
testImplementation 'com.android.support.test.espresso:espresso-core:3.0.1'
}
Edit -- To set drawable for marker,
BitmapDescriptorFactory.fromResource(R.drawable.your_icon)

In the AndroidManifest.xml, I've added these part:
<meta-data
android:name="com.google.android.geo.API_KEY"

And of course in strings.xml, I have something like this:
<string name="google_maps_key" templateMergeStrategy="preserve" translatable="false">xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx</string>
When the app is run, there is not map drawn at all. Blank. I tried to debug the code a few times, and couldn't find any significant line in logcat (maybe I missed that). What could be possibly wrong here?
The first issue I see with your code is you need to call the mv.onCreate(this) before calling mv.getMapAsync().
I am looking into your code further to see if there are any other issues.
Lifecycle of a MapView https://developers.google.com/android/reference/com/google/android/gms/maps/MapView
Also the only time you call mGoogleMap.moveCamerais in onLocationChanged can you try setting an initial location in onMapReady and see if the map shows up. Something like this
I am trying to make an app that can track the GPS location of my bike. To start off, I've been trying to read the GPS location of my own phone. My app keeps crashing whenever I try to launch the fragment below. I have put in a Google API key for the App and placed the line " " in my manifest file. What are some good ways to debug this issue? I am new to Android Studio so I would love to hear any sort of feedback.

You need to use GoogleApiClient for FusedLocationApi.Here is a working code
protected synchronized void buildGoogleApiClient() {
mGoogleApiClient = new GoogleApiClient.Builder(this)
.addConnectionCallbacks(this)
.addOnConnectionFailedListener(this)
.addApi(LocationServices.API)
.build();}
return;
}
Call buildGoogleApiClient method on onCreate().And implement required interfaces. GoogleApiClient.ConnectionCallbacks, GoogleApiClient.OnConnectionFailedListener,
LocationListener
#Override
public void onConnected(#Nullable Bundle bundle) {
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, android.Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, android.Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
// TODO: Consider calling
// ActivityCompat#requestPermissions
// here to request the missing permissions, and then overriding
// public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, String[] permissions,
// int[] grantResults)
// to handle the case where the user grants the permission. See the documentation
// for ActivityCompat#requestPermissions for more details.
return;
}
Location mLastLocation = LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.getLastLocation(
mGoogleApiClient);
if (mLastLocation != null) {
//place marker at current position
// Log.e("x", mLastLocation.getLongitude() + "");
//Log.e("y", mLastLocation.getLatitude() + "");
currentLocation = mLastLocation;
}
LocationRequest mLocationRequest = new LocationRequest();
mLocationRequest.setInterval(5000); //5 seconds
mLocationRequest.setFastestInterval(5000); //3 seconds
mLocationRequest.setPriority(LocationRequest.PRIORITY_BALANCED_POWER_ACCURACY);
mLocationRequest.setSmallestDisplacement(50F); //1/10 meter
LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.requestLocationUpdates(mGoogleApiClient, mLocationRequest, this);
}
#Override
public void onConnectionSuspended(int i) {
}
#Override
public void onConnectionFailed(#NonNull ConnectionResult connectionResult) {
}
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
currentLocation = location;
}
And define this parameters
private GoogleApiClient mGoogleApiClient;
private Location currentLocation;
Btw if you are using Android 6.x or 7.x version. You need to grant permission at runtime.Check here
#FnR you're talking about the old version of the fusedlocationapi, a new one came out with the version 11 of the playservices, it's supposed to be much simpler, look here : https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2017/06/reduce-friction-with-new-location-apis.html
I got the same issue there seems to be a conflict between the new fusedlocationapi and the map activities.
I'm able to get my current location with this new technique in an empty activity with no map but the exact same code used in a map activity returns a null result.
Google didn't even provide any example of this with a map, which is crazy since getting the location is 99% of the time coupled with a map
I'm new to android and i'm trying to develop an android application which includes tracking the user location details and showing it on a google map and the location should be updated in the map whenever it is changed. I'm unable to understand how to get this through google maps v2. They mentioned to change dependencies but i'm unable to find where to do that can anyone explain the usage of this with a simple example i tried to implement the steps given in below link but i'm unable to find project properties to edit
https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=19nQzvKP-CVLd7_VrpwnHfl-AE9fjbJySowONZZtNHzw
If you want to show location of user on map when the change their location you need to take, Location API and Google Map API,
here is dependency link put in your app level gradel,
dependencies {
compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps:10.0.1'
compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services:10.0.1'
}
Then after you need to start location service for update location on map also you need to initialise your map,
Here i consider You initialised your map show I am just showing how to use location api,
