I have a status bar with 6 elements in a row in a linear layout. This looks ok on a newer display with high resolution. But when I start the app on my old smartphone only the first text of the Textview in the status bar is shown. The imageViews are cut off and the status bar gets higher without extra content.
What I want is, that if the content does not fit, the text in the first textView is shorten, so that the ImageViews can all be shown. Is this possible?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="2dp"
android:gravity="right|center_vertical"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/statusbar_text"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:text="Text der Statusbar" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/statusbar_text1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:text="TEXT1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state0"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state0" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state2" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state3" />
</LinearLayout>
Add weight for all elements . If weights are equal the Layout will be divided equally. if weight is twice the others then the division will be twice. if orientation is vertical and you had given weight then height should be 0dp and if it is horizontal , width should be 0dp
?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="2dp"
android:gravity="right|center_vertical"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/statusbar_text"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Text der Statusbar" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/statusbar_text1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:text="TEXT1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state0"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state0" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state2" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state3" />
</LinearLayout>
you should make your layout like this. adding weight to the views will fix their widths. So no matter the text length it won't disturb your imageViews.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="2dp"
android:gravity="right|center_vertical"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/statusbar_text"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="2"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:text="Text der Statusbar" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/statusbar_text1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:text="TEXT1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state0"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.5"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state0" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.5"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.5"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state2" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/some_state3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.5"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/stat_some_state3" />
</LinearLayout>

I am making chat activity and having issues with right chat bubble. As you can see in the image below. TextView stretches height wise. According to my thinking it should be stretching width wise first then if space is full it should stretch height wise. Please suggest me if it is possible with xml or not. I have seen java code solution but i want to find a solution in xml first.
layout.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="right"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:paddingBottom="10dp"
android:paddingTop="10dp">
<View
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="1dp"
android:layout_weight="20" />
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="80"
android:gravity="right">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="20dp"
android:background="#drawable/ic_bubble_sent"
android:gravity="right">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txt_msg_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_toStartOf="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:textSize="16sp"
android:text="Lorem"
android:visibility="visible" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/txt_msg_content"
android:layout_marginTop="-9dp"
android:text="00:33"
android:textColor="#color/colorAppGray"
android:textSize="12sp"
android:textStyle="normal" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
Replace your two TextView with this,
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txt_msg_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="16sp"
android:text="Lorem"
android:visibility="visible"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_toStartOf="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_marginRight="32dp"
android:layout_marginEnd="32dp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="00:33"
android:textSize="12sp"
android:textStyle="normal"
android:layout_alignBaseline="#+id/txt_msg_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentEnd="true" />
I removed all unnecessary alignments from first TextView.
UPDATE
The overall layout looks like,
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:paddingBottom="10dp"
android:paddingTop="10dp">
<View
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="1dp"
android:layout_weight="20" />
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="80"
android:gravity="right">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="20dp"
>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txt_msg_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="16sp"
android:text="Lorem"
android:visibility="visible"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_toStartOf="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_marginRight="32dp"
android:layout_marginEnd="32dp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txt_message_time"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="00:33"
android:textSize="12sp"
android:textStyle="normal"
android:layout_alignBaseline="#+id/txt_msg_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentEnd="true" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
Note : I removed your background for testing.
Here is the situation :
I'm only using LinearLayouts (see code below), and I need the right box to be always stuck to the far right side of the screen. If i use my device in portrait mode, it's fine, but when i turn to landscape or simply go on a larger device, its just ugly.
What can I do? I've tried a 100 things with gravity/layout_gravity/relative layouts and it just does not work.
Note :
This will end as a row in a list.
The problematic linear layout contains two textview which are pretty small (~30dp wide) and on top of each other.
Here is the code for the above screenshot :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="5dp" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imgCtrl"
android:layout_width="68px"
android:layout_height="68px"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:contentDescription="#string/imgTransport"
android:src="#drawable/ic_launcher" />
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:padding="5dp" >

android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:textSize="18sp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/lbStop"
android:layout_width="180dp"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:layout_weight="8"
android:hint="TestValueForStop"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:textSize="16sp" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:padding="5dp" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/lbTime"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="0dp"

How to block 1st TextView to not narrows others ?
You can use layout_weight property to tell android how much space each textView takes on the screen. If you want all of them to have the same space you can add the layout_weight of 1 for all of them.
You will also need to readjust your layout_width too. You will have to trade off for the layout_heght. For example if i want 4 textviews in a horizontal line holding equal space "Horizontally" i would do something like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="This is verrry long text" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="maybe not" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="let us see" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView4"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="ok" />
I am trying to make a linear layout scrollable by using a scrollView so that the images put into the imageViews don't push the other views and functions off of the screen like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/personalizetextView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/customize"
android:textSize="30sp"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_marginTop="20dip"/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/personalizetextviewChangeBackground"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/customizebackground"
android:gravity="center" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:maxWidth="100dp"
android:maxHeight="100dp"
android:scaleType="fitCenter"
android:contentDescription="#string/descForBackground"
/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/btnChangeImage"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/change_background" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/set_background"
android:id="#+id/btnSetBackground" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/personalizetextviewChangeIcon"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/change_icon"
android:gravity="center" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView2Icon"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:maxWidth="100dp"
android:maxHeight="100dp"
android:scaleType="fitCenter"
android:contentDescription="#string/descForIcon"
/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/btnChangeImageForIcon"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/change_icon" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/set_icon"
android:id="#+id/btnSetIcon" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btnLinkToFeedback"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="40dip"
android:background="#null"
android:text="#string/Send_Feedback"
android:textColor="#21dbd4"
android:textStyle="bold" />
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
But it just makes it so that my first textView shows up and nothing else.
What can I do to fix this?
Put
android:orientation="vertical"
in LinearLayout and not in ScrollView ;)
The default orientation for LinearLayout is horizontal and your TextView probably spans across multiple lines.
In my application I am showing list of datas from database in a list view. For that listview i have 1 header with 4 text views arranged horizontally..But i want this to be arranged with some space exactly between and also it should fit into every screen. Please help me.Thanks in advance.By the following code it is arranging 1 after the other without space.
My code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:background="#ffffffff">
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdate"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Date"/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdateasc"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdes"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Item"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdritemasc"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrprice"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Price"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrpriceasc"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textColor="#000000"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrtot"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Total"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrtotasc"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textColor="#000000"
/>
</LinearLayout>
You can use layout margin for spacing between view like
android:layout_marginLeft="5dp"
android:layout_marginRight="5dp"
To fit them on the screen you can use layout_weight.Give every view weight 1 so all will be equal. You already use fill_parent for the width of your LinearLayout.
android:layout_weight="1" for every view
try this use android:layout_weight="1"in all TextView
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:background="#ffffffff">
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdate"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:textColor="#ff00ff00"
android:text="Date"/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdateasc"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="gffgfg"
android:textColor="#ffff0000"
android:layout_weight="1"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdes"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:textColor="#FF4500"
android:text="Item"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdritemasc"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="gdgdfgsg"
android:textColor="#ff0000ff"
android:layout_weight="1"
/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrprice"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:textColor="#ff00ff00"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Price"
/>
</LinearLayout>
Instead of wrap_content for widht you should use weight on your textview and weightsum on linear layout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:background="#ffffffff"
android:weightSum="100.0">
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdate"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="100/number of text views"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginLeft="2dp"
android:layout_marginRight="2dp"
android:text="Date"/>
....
</LinearLayout>
If you do not want to use exact values for your margins you should add some blank text views and set the weight smaller than the one of the ones in which you have text.
Here is the code,
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:background="#ffffffff">
<TextView android:id="#+id/hdrdate"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
