Normally when the back button is clicked it goes to the previous activity and if the current activity is the first activity, the application closes.
I have a splash screen (that is logically my first activity) and then the menu activity loads.
I want to close the program when the back button is pressed on my menu activity (as if it is the first activity) and avoid going back to the splash screen again, but I know that I should not exit the program.
I was wondering what is the functionality of back button on the first activity?
does it put the program to pause?

Instead of using your splash as the main activity, use menu activity as the main one, and in onCreate() chain off the splash activity, which will close and disappear forever.
When new Activity is launched from first Activity, first Activity is executed until onStop() method, then it stops and waits for relaunch, unless you killed it by calling .finish(), in that case launched Activity becomes first Activity and back button will minimize application on back button press. In order to control what application does on back button press you can override this method in your Activities and implement your own custom behaviour:

While you are on the SplashScreen, on the method calling your menu activity I assume you are doing something like startActivity (new Intent (this, MenuActivity.class)); in Java or startActivity(Intent(this, MenuActivity::class.java)) for Kotlin just after that call finish() this will remove your SplashScreen from the back stack
add this attribute to your splash activity (in manifest):
android:excludeFromRecents="true"
pressing back in per activity, transfer control to prev activity in stack (back stack) that not excluded from "Recents".

I would expect only onResume() to be called since I have this in Manifest:

This is expected behavior of activity life cycle. When you press back button then activity get destroyed, it will start from onCreate method.
This is because when you press back, it destroyes the activity.
I think that what you want is to keep the state when you come back to this activity, not really to have one instance of it. So you should save the information you need and then restore them in onCreate.
Single instance only means (if I remember it well) that if you launch multiple activities without finishing them, the ones that have singleInstance will go back to front when you will call startActivity() and will not call onCreate. But this means you can't have this behavior by pressing back.
Maybe you can override onBackPressed and start another activity (the one you should go back to) instead of calling super.onBackPressed(). this should do what you want but if think it will be kind of difficult to manage.
By the way remember that Activities might be killed by the system itself, so you should not rely on the fact that your activity as not been killed
My app starts with the MainActivity, which is nothing but a simple menu with buttons for sub menus:
Start
Options
Help
etc...
Each sub menu option starts a new activity.
These new activities (submenus) will have a Back button on the top in the Title bar.
When I press these back button on the top, it goes back to the Main Menu activity as expected, but it calls onCreate function of the Main Activity.
This is not good, it equals to an app restart in my case.
If I press the physical back button and I implement the onBackPressed function,
it can resume to the Main Menu without calling the onCreate function,
which is my desired behaviour.

When you press the Up button the parent activity is called. Sort of like a startActivity call, which creates a new instance of the chosen activity.
To prevent that, you can specify that only a single instance of your Start activity can be created. Set this in your manifest:
android:launchMode="singleInstance"

If you start an activity (via intents or any other way) which was already started and is on the stack , then Android just takes that same instance of the activity and places it on top of the stack. A new instance is not created. Ofcourse this happens if you did not manually kill the activity (by calling finish() in it).

Its not recommended to override the back button to quit the application in every activity(Unless your app has strong reasons to do so). generally the app should let the user go back to the previous activity when he presses the back button (which is what a user might be expecting).
If you still would like to quit with the back button then you can override the back button function and launch the intent that leads to the home screen:

Its very simple.
Don't call finish() on Home/Main activity.
For Ex: Say you have 4 activities.. If your requirement is like this .. Act1-->Act2-->Act3-->Act4-->Act1 . So, don't call finish() on Act1. But call finish() on Act2, Act3 while you are going to other activity. So when you click on logo in Act4, just call finish(). So, automatically you will come back to Act1 which is your Main activity.
If you have logo in Act2, Act3 also then call finish() on click of logo to go back to Main. But remember to call finish() on Act2 while you are going from Act2 to Act3
I want to know How an activity is visible once i press home button and relaunch the activity
for eg. If an application went in background and lauch again then MyActicity.java should be visible and not the same screen on which I quit.

As you can see in the documentation the onPause() method is called, whenever your Activity is paused. Just put this code in your Activity code:
public void onPause() {
this.finish();
}
If you do so, the Activity will be closed, whenever it is paused.
I don't know if I understood well your questions but if you have 2 activities A and B. if you are in B and press home button and then when you return to the app you want to go to A.. you have to call finish() method inside onPause() method on Activity B.
I have two activities A and B. What I want is to show activity A as an intro, the user will be unable to navigate back to it. Is there some flag I can set to activity A to do this? Can I block the back button for one activity only? Activity A is of course my main activity which automatically starts activity B after some "hard work".

you do not need to block the back button, but just call finish() on your A activity after firing an intent to start B. Back button pops the previous activity from activity stack and it won't be able to pop A if it is already finished.
For this you don't need to block the Back button. Simply, start the second Activity and quit the first one. And now if user presses the Back, they will be taken to the Android home screen not on your apps home screen.
Updates: By the way if you want to intercept the Back button for any reason, simply override the onBackPressed() method of Activity class. See this for details.

You should call finish() in Activity A right after starting Activity B (calling the Intent).
it works but the application terminates and i'm redirected to android's applications screen. I would like to stay in activity B if back button is pressed, i don't want to exit the app. here's is what i got :
