I am starting out with android studio. Unfortunately I can not even get started. In the design mode I cannot display a preview. In the picture attached you can see I do not have an option of android device. I assume this is one of the reasons.
Can anyone help me trouble shoot this. I have downloaded nexus 5 and 4 in the AVD manager. their screen resolution is 1080p and 768p - My laptop only has 720p could this be an issue?
Very frustrating as I cannot even play around with it.
Thanks in advance

Check that answer , if this is not work please reinstall your android studio or make sure all important sdk tools are download on your device.
Make sure XML representation of layout is error free.
Try changing the API levels in the design views.
Clean build your project by going to Build > Clean build
Ensure you don’t have any file from SDK that is missing
If everything is proper still if android studio is not able to render your layout invalidate cache and restart android studio by going to File > Invalidate Cache/Restart

I'm currently using Android Studio version 4.2.1 (mac OS). While opening a Kotlin file, it shows "Analyzing" in the top right corner as shown in the attached image, forever! Here're what I already did
Clean / Rebuild the project, no luck
Restart the program, no luck
Invalidate cache and restart, no luck
and here're what I will certainly not do (please do not recommend me to do the following)
reinstall the program
format the computer
It's a stable version by the way. Thanks in advance.
I have recently updated to Android Studio 3.3 and have noticed that my layout preview is at a low resolution.
Is there any solution to fixing this? This issue occurs only with the preview and in the design tab (excluding the blueprint) - running the app is fine.
Thanks
UPDATE: I deleted all of my Android Studio files, including the SDK (which was somehow installed on my other SSD). Then I re-downloaded Android Studio 3.3 and opened my project, only to find that the issue still remained.
A lot of users are facing problems until now with Android Studio 3.3. I don't think it's a problem with graphic card, maybe they will release a new update fixing the problems in the near future. For the moment would suggest you to work with design/blueprint, and test by running the app.
I solved the problem by adding this line to my IDE custom properties:
hidpi=false
Just go to Help -> Edit Custom Properties (Create new file if it doesn't exits)
Then add the following line and restart your IDE.
I've been updating my project to target sdk-api28 and I started setting up the latest MaterialComponents, but I'm now having issues with the layout Previewer within Android Studio.
The Preview just won't display the correct design for the material components, eg. adding style="#style/Widget.MaterialComponents.TextInputLayout.OutlinedBox" on a TextInputLayout view won't change the design (no outlines) in the emulated preview, but it does look okay when running on a phone (got outlines).
Here's how it should and does look when running on phones:
But here's a screenshot of how it looks in the Android studio's Preview.
I'm having this issue on any project, and even on the Shrine tutorial app with the same setup from MDC Codelabs (MDC-103(Java) - Shrine).
This happens only on the preview. Any of these projects, when running on a phone or on the emulator within Studio, look okay.
As much as I could 'think through' this, the issue is I believe somehow connected to my Android Studio, emulator, or maybe build tools versions? Please, could someone point out if I'm missing something very simple?
My Android Studio (sdk, tools etc) versions that I have installed:
Android Studio 3.2.1
Android Emulator 28.0.16
Android Platform Version: API 28: Android 9 (Pie) revision 6
Android SDK Platform-Tools 28.0.1
Android SDK Tools 26.1.1
This issue happaned to me in android studio 3.2.
after one day everything gose fine.
what i do was invalidate and restart. reset android studio default settings
the clean. and exit android studio and open it again. and it works fine
this is a bug not related to you only.
While some users who experienced similar issues, could solve this with cleaning out Android Studio cache and config, this didn't work for me.
After looking into various possible fixes and tips, I solved this by updating to Android Studio 3.4 Canary which is the latest non-guaranteed-stable version of Android Studio, which you can get by either downloading a Preview release (here: developer.android.com) or changing your update preference (within Android Studio) ie. Update channel to Dev channel or Canary channel within Android Studio Settings > Appearance & Behaviour > System settings > Updates
I do think that this might not be a proper fix, but it's the only thing that worked out for me and solved the layout (design) preview not being able to display correct design.
If someone else runs into a similar issue, make sure to first try out clearing cache, using the Invalidate and restart under File menu or any other method. The Invalidate and restart feature clears out cache and restarts android studio, after which it will have to sync again and check for all dependencies, Sdk, tools etc.
Also to avoid this issue, before trying out anything else make sure you have proper and latest SDK Build-tools, Emulator, SDK Platform-tools, SDK Tools versions installed.
I'll leave this here as an answer for now, and update it if any new solutions come around.
Sorry, I'm here 3 years late... But this was my solution for this render problem... It has Material.Light theme by default. If you change it to Light.Bridge the problem is solved!
Hope it helps some one
I have a project i have worked on for a few weeks now. I went in to optimize some png's and was able to take a few mb's off the file size. However, when i generate the apk its the exact same file size.
I remember in eclipse i could go into the gen folder to delete those images and it would then recognize the new ones. I tried to go into the build folder in studio and do that but it still produces an apk the same file size. Is there something im missing?
I have taken one of the optimized images out of the produced apk and compared to the old and its the same size so its not picking up the new one for whatever reason.
Is there something else im supposed to do?
I know this is a very old thread but the answer to this question was never accepted.
So the problem here is in the emulator and not your computer or the software.
When you update the images the file names and paths stay the same. So it doesn't change the files on the emulator. I think it's just the way the android system works, if nothing changes then the app on the phone doesn't update.
So the solution is to simply uninstall the app from your emulator, then run the app from Android Studio.
Try rebuilding your app after refreshing the workspace, it works in eclipse but not sure about studio.
Go to Project->Clean. Uncheck "Start a build immediately". Go right click on your project and choose build. Then Run as - Android Application.
In IntellijIdea :
http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/webhelp/cleaning-system-cache.html
How to clean project cache in Intellij idea like Eclipse's clean?
For me it works to choose Build -> Rebuild Project on the main menu to do a full rebuild whenever I only change assets (i.e. when no source code has changed).
On top panel of xml designer there is Refresh Button.
I have recently set up my Android development environment. Every thing is alright but when I run my emulator it takes to much time with an error dialog on the emulator screen says- "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" and no application runs on it.
I have recently shifted to 64bit windows7 and using JDK7 and eclipse juno for 64bit.
My emulator configuration is given below:
can anyone suggest me what is wrong with it?
This is still "unanswered", but it probably has been resolved.
I just want to share my experience and clarify a few things, some of which may not matter. Anyway, if this helps someone else that's great.
I had this problem on one machine (a new, but slower machine), but not another (the faster one) when running a 4.0.3 emulator. It is not a hardware problem though, and CPU speed doesn't make a difference.
Both machines are fully up-to-date ADT (Eclipse 4.2.x and Android 4.2.2 (API 17) SDK environments.
Editing, or even Deleting the emulator and then recreating it did NOT fix it.
The best solution is to locate and update the config.ini file. In Windows 7 (x64) I found the config.ini file in %USERPROFILE%\.android\avd. It was located in a folder ICS_4.0.3_API_15.avd [*see AVD names below].
NOTE: First make sure you have “show hidden files, folder, or drives” turned on in Explorer or you won't see the ".android" folder.
Not sure it matters, but my entry said hw.mainKeys=no, not hw.mainKeys=false as some have suggested. Changing it to hw.mainKeys=yes seems to have fixed the problem.
AVD Names - Your AVD name will be different from mine. I just add the Release name/API level in the name so I can quickly scan the list and go to a release, such as Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, etc. (e.g., ICS_4.0.3_API_15.avd)
There's more information in another thread at < Unfortunately System UI has stopped >. It starts by asking a seemingly tangential question, but gets to the same place.
This issues has happened to me a few times, and has always been resolved by cold booting the emulator.
On OS X:
Open Android Studio. Navigate to Configure > AVD Manager.
Under Actions > dropdown triangle on the right > Cold Boot Now:
Here is a photo of what the menu looks like
I'm not sure what this looks like on Windows, maybe someone can confirm that it is similar?
What seems to have worked for me and others is to change the hw.mainKeys setting in your config.ini to true:
hw.mainKeys=true
Close avd and eclipse then Delete .android file created in your user folder then try to create a new emulator this help me most of the time.It may helps you
My case. Android SDK was placed here D:\android-sdk\ for a nearly year ago. After one of recently SDK updates I'v got "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped". I'v created number of divices with different RAM amount, VM heap size, screen size, API level(problem seems to be only on API14+), etc. At finish i noticed that new devices was created at the location C:\users\XuserX\.android\avd
After reading this post solution was simple: create ANDROID_SDK and ANDROID_SDK_HOME system variables with value d:\android-sdk\
Hope this post helps somebody.
just switch off and on hte button in emulator ... it can remove that problem
This is also happening if your device definition name has " character in the name, like Kindle Fire HD 7".
Once I removed the apostrophe symbol, error was gone.
In Android Studio Tools -> AVD manager -> Actions -> dropdown▾-> Wipe Data
Go AVD Manager and just click "Wipe Data" for your emulator in Android Studio.
It might be a little late, but I used to face this problem every time I started my AVD. Also the cold boot option was just a temporary fix for me.
I checked the android version that I had installed on my emulator, and noticed the ABI version was x86.
I downloaded the X86_64 version and I have not faced that annoying error anymore.
