What does “x” character represent in android versions? - android

In this official Android source page (https://source.android.com/setup/start/build-numbers) that contains the code names, API levels and versions numbers some of the versions contain the character x in its version number for example:
Froyo: the version number is 2.2.x
Honeycomb: the version number is 3.2.x
So what does x character represents in the version numbers?

I believe that the "x" stands for all the versions for the specified version. For example, 2.2.x stands for 2.2.1, 2.2.2, and 2.2.3.
Wikipedia page for the different Android versions.

It is the API coverage.
As an example:
Honeycomb Versions start from 3.0 to 3.2.6.
3.0 API 11
3.1 API 12, NDK6
3.2.x means that all versions starts with 3.2 are API 13. Also x is the patch level of API 13 for honeycomb.

In my opinion,
X is mean all of something. Like 3.0.x mean all of 3.0.1,3.0.2,etc. And new version update of android studio, we got. androidX. I guess its mean, They put all feature of pre version in one.

The X in the Version Number suggests the Patch Update version. The First number stands for the Android Version Start (i.e 3 for HoneyComb and moving forward), the Second Number stands for the Sub-Android Version of the Base Version(i.e. 3.1) and the X then stands for the Patch Update Number(3.1.1).

downgrade min sdk version results too many errors on Android Studio

Actually I'm new to Android and I built my project targeting version API 25, compile 25, min 25 version, and now i need my app to be accessible for more devices like sdk 14!
I changed min SDK version to 14 and it raised lots of errors.
Note that I'm using RecyclerView, DrawerLayout, FloatingActionbar and BigContentNotification in my application!
I used min SDK 19 and trying to install in android 4.0.4!!
But actually there was some points too:
Use that library's versions that are Compatible (same) with your target api (Recommended)
If you put wrong(Incompatible) versions together, Your application might crash; so it's better to read This first

Selected activity template has a minimum SDK level of 9

I can't create a new window on Android Studio. Error message shown in red "Selected activity template has a minimum SDK level of 9" how can I solve this issue ?
You have to open build.gradle and change the minSdkVersion to 16. Then, you have to rebulid the project. I fix that issue by this way
Chose an higher minimum API level (at least 14 for this template). Go back to the first step and change the minimum api level.
Selected Activity template has a minimum SDK level of X
Android Studio says so, because you've selected Minimum SDK version to be less than X. in you case SDK version less than 9 in the previous option.
See this:
I'd get the same error as yours, as I've set Minimum SDK to be : Android 1.1.
FIX:-
Choose an SDK version higher than 9.
In your case, it's ideal to choose API 16: Android 4.1(Jelly Bean) and above as more features would be supported from this version onwards.
Go to app level gradle file. You can find it from the gradle scripts -> build.gradle(Module:app). In android{defaultConfig{minSdkVersion}}} put 16 and Sync project from top right. This should solve your problem. This happens because the API Level expressed by an application will be compared to the API Level of a given Android system, which may vary among different Android devices. Why android reference does not list "Android 2.3.5–2.3.7" as API 10?

In the android documentation there is nothing about Android 2.3.5, 2.3.6, 2.3.7: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/manifest/uses-sdk-element.html#ApiLevels
Wikipedia however lists those as API 10 and other answers say it's API 10. Which is the logical thing since API 11 starts with Android 3.0 and there is no such thing like API 10,5...
So did they simply forget to mention it in the android reference? Or is that some kind of "unofficial Android" ?
Here is the thing, android's latest version kitkat(4.4) is api19.
After some minor update, the current kitakt version stands at 4.4.2, however the api version remains the same at 19.
Similarly, all the minor versions of android will not have a corresponding api verison.

How to enumerate android version in res/values?

I made two versions of the theme for my app.one for the android version below 4 and the second for the android version is greater than 4.
Placed them in res/values and res/values-v14.
Do I need to enumerate res/values-v15, res/values-v16 or res/values-v14-v15 ?
Noope, res/vales-v14 applies to all version equal to or greater than 14, as per Android's documentation (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/providing-resources.html):
The API level supported by the device. For example, v1 for API level 1
(devices with Android 1.0 or higher) and v4 for API level 4 (devices
with Android 1.6 or higher).

Build Target and Min SDK version in Android

While creating an android project if i say that the Build Target of my Android porject is 2.2 (API Level is picked as 8) and in the text box for Min SDK version. If i put some value apart from the API level (smaller or greater than 8) of the build target then what happens?
Does the build happen according to the build target specified, but the application developed is compatible with the smaller android versions (if i specify API level < 8 ). Or the application developed is only compatible for the higher android version (if i specify API level > 8 ).
Can anyone please explain?
There is a similiar question already posted with an excellent answer:
Read the post by Steve H.
Android Min SDK Version vs. Target SDK Version
Say you set the manifest API level to 4, then the app will work on any api 4 device provided. BUT the project will be built to API level 8 so if you have any post-level 4 api methods in your code then the app will crash.
You can only put min SDK version less than your target version,it tell that your application can support to that min SDK version, but you should confirm that your application should run under min SDK version supported devices since the Build target versions may use new APIs which are available for that specific version and those APIs may not available in min SDK versions
ok.. if you have developed an application using particular sdk for instance Android 2.2 and your minSDKversion is < 8 then application is falsely declaring to android system that It can be installed in Android device having sdk version less than Android 2.2. In that case if application happens to install on Android 2.1 and if you re using API that are exculsiviely avaialbe in Android 2.2 platform and not on Android 2.1 then your application will crash on the device. if your minsdkversion > 8 then application won't get installed on the device having Android sdk 2.2 or lower version
