I'm having problems building apps on Android Studio. Things work fine when the project is on my ext4 partition, but when I created a new one on my NTFS, I encountered this:
Argument for #NotNull parameter 'message' of com/android/tools/idea/gradle/project/sync/GradleSyncState.syncFailed must not be null

The error disappeared when I restarted Android Studio, but after that I still cannot run my app (the project structure in the sidebar is not displayed properly).
I'm using Android Studio 3.2 on Ubuntu 18.04.1.
I figured it out. (By mistake, to be honest...)
Let's say you have an NTFS partition mount at /mnt/ntfs, and your project is at /mnt/ntfs/projects/project.
Your home partition (ext4) is mounted at /home, your home directory is /home/user and you have a symbolic link at /home/user/projects that points to /mnt/ntfs/projects.
The reason I (and hopefully you too) have encountered this error is that when using Android Studio's "Open Project..." option, I provided the symbolic link (/home/user/projects/project). When trying to provide the real path (/mnt/ntfs/projects/project) the gradle sync succeeded.
So to fix this for now, simply provide the real path. However, this should probably be addressed by IntelliJ or the developers of Gradle.

While I try to open Android studio, an error dialog box appears and it shows like

And also another dialog box appears as
Unable to save settings
Failed to save settings. Please restart Android Studio
On the top, in the configuration tab, it now shows Add Configuration where it showed app with an android icon previously.
The project explorer keeps on loading forever. The same problem occurs whenever I try to create a new project as well.
There is no modules.xml file and some folders in the .idea folder are missing which the previous projects have.
What I have tried so far
Invalidated caches and Restarted
Deleted .idea and .app folder and restarted
Created a new project to check if the same error occurs
Uninstalled and reinstalled Android studio
Clicked on Repair IDE and followed the steps
Installed previous android studio versions and checked
But none the above steps seem to help resolve the issue.
I know it's an old post, but it's relating to a similar issue and might still be of use:
Android Studio - Gradle sync failed: Already disposed
As stated,
As it turned out, the problem was that I was trying to open a project directory that was a symlink to the actual location (on the same partition). Gradle (on command line) had no issues building the project from the symlinked location, however, opening it in Android Studio resulted in the obscure and non helpful error described above.
Also, some have reported this worked for them:
Delete module folder and modules.xml file under .idea folder.
Close Android Studio
Reopen and sync
So it might effectively be because your module.xml file is missing
For me what helped was (ignoring the root cause of this issue)
removing the project from my local machine
and cloning it again. Then reopening it in AS.
I am on Mac btw.
(Try to restart AS (or Intelli) and clear cache first, before doing this.)
Basically:
Close Android Studio
rm -rf Project-Directory
git clone via commandline (or AS, both works)
reopen AS and import project
Since I don't have time to fiddle around with all the possible options
that you find on the net, to fix this issue, this was the fasted approach.
I just installed Android Studio and have started a new app (Basic App template with toolbar and floating button). I have enabled Virtualization in my BIOS and have added a Pixel 2 (version 29) emulator.
When I press the Run button, the emulator opens the Pixel 2 and powers on, but the app doesn't open and no icons appear (apart from the standard phone, sms, chrome, playstore icons). I press Run again and still nothing happens (apart from Gradle building).
There are no errors that I can see.
Edit: Every now and then when I press Run I see the following error message in Event Log:
8:52 AM Error during Sync: Remote object doesn't exist!
This only occurs sometimes. Other time, it just says:
8:44 AM Executing tasks: [:app:assembleDebug]
8:44 AM Gradle build finished in 3 s 972 ms
I have tried:
Deleting the emulator from AVD Manager then creating a new one (Pixel 2, version 29, everything else left as default).
Deleting the project and creating a new one
Uninstalling and reinstalling Android Studio
Restarting computer
Going to File > Invalidate Caches / Restart and invaliding then restarting
Edit 2:
I was just asked to check Logcat in a comment. There is a lot in there but this part is highlighted red and repeats throughout the logs:

This is a very undesirable kind of system bug. Well, the point is here that, sometimes even creating a simple data directory won't work. You would have to go to the source and create a folder yourself. This case is same. Attempting 'Invalidate caches and restating' isn't working, so you have to do it manually. This is how:
Solution:
Close Android Studio
Go to C:\Users\UserName\.android and rename:
build-cache folder to build-cache.bak
Go to C:\Users\UserName\.AndroidStudio3.4.2\system and rename these folders:
caches to caches.bak
compiler to compiler.bak
compile-server to compile-server.bak
conversion to conversion.bak
external_build_system to external_build_system.bak
frameworks to frameworks.bak
gradle to gradle.bak
resource_folder_cache to resource_folder_cache.bak
Open the Android Studio and open your project again.
Hope it solves your case also. Did for me when I faced the same problem around a year ago.

Make sure the root directory contains the AndroidManifest.xml file. Also, the root directory must contain either the .project and .classpath files or the res/ and src/ directories.
To reload a project do Import as a Project:
Start Android Studio and close any open Android Studio projects.
From the Android Studio menu click File > New > Import Project.
Alternatively, from the Welcome screen, click Import project.
Select the project folder with the AndroidManifest.xml file and click Ok.
See section Import as a Project.
After project imported
I have the same issue but with even something more strange: the missing locale resource is en_NL which should never exist and I have no idea where this is coming from.
The language settings are en_GB and en_US.
In the Android Studio 3.0 the resources.asrc is present and seems OK.
Update:
I managed to get rid of this error. The project I'm working on is a Cordova project.
I opened the generated .apk file in Studio. That caused to error to appear.
When opening .../platforms/android in Studio everything works fine.
Perhaps not related: I also went back to version 2.3.3 of Studio. I'll keep you updated for this last point.
Update:
Studio 3.0 works also.
I have recently updated my Android Studio to v 2.2 Preview 5. and as I tried to run my one of my project I am getting 2 Errors.

That directory has been invalid for several years. Most likely, the tools and Android just ignored it, or did not honor all of its qualifiers, and now the build tools are validating the directory names.
Change layout-xlarge-xhdpi-land to layout-xlarge-land-xhdpi. Qualifier rules have to appear in the directory name (left to right) in the order that they appear in "Table 2" (top to bottom).
Or, better yet, remove -xhdpi outright. Having a density qualifier in anything other than a drawable or mipmap resource directory is a code smell. It should not be necessary and may not be doing what you think it should be doing anyway.
I had the same InvalidPathException problem this morning, also after updated to v2.2 preview 5. I solved it by removing leading/trailing spaces and line-break on the concerned XML declaration.
Check if there is a ':' which should not be here.
It seems Android Studio is a bit more sensitive to XML values.
I am a new Fedora user (having previously always used ubuntu), and I am trying to download eclipse. Unfortunately, "sudo yum install eclipse" is returning "no package eclipse available". I assume this means that I am missing the correct repo, but I can't seem to find the right one / how to add it to my repo list for this version. My version of fedora is centos5 based, and my current repo list is the following:
$ yum repolist
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, security
repo id repo name status
amzn amzn-v0.9-Base 2,041
rpmforge RHEL 2010.11 - RPMforge.net - dag 10,733
repolist: 12,774
I am doing all of this just for the sake of being able to build android applications from the command line. As far as I understand, running tools/android update sdk requires eclipse (since it is currently giving me an error complaining that eclipse is missing) That said, I am perfectly happy to not install eclipse, if there is a way around it.
The error I am getting from /tools/android update sdk is:
No command line parameters provided, launching UI.
See 'android --help' for operations from the command line.

Download Eclipse from here:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads
You will get a fresher version than from Linux repo.
Eclipse is available on RPMFusion[1], so it'd be great if you install RPMFusion repo (they come in two versions: Free and non-free. I highly recommend installing both)
