I have an app on the Google Play Store. I've found an interesting bug here - when I'm sending my app to background (by pressing home) and then clicking on the app icon again, it opens the main screen.
I read some article (https://medium.com/#elye.project/three-important-yet-unbeknown-android-app-launcher-behaviors-part-2-139a4d88157) about it, tried all application states, but the behavior remains the same. However, If I will open my ADB app (or from Studio) all works just fine.
How to solve this? My manifest file looks like following:
<uses-feature
android:name="android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch"
android:required="false" />
<uses-feature
android:name="android.hardware..accelerometer"
android:required="true" />
<uses-feature
android:name="android.hardware.telephony"
android:required="false" />
<application
android:name=".MyApplication"
android:launchMode="singleTop">
<activity
android:name=".ui.main.MainActivity"
android:configChanges="orientation|screenSize"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:launchMode="singleTop">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE" />
<data
android:host="signin"
android:scheme="appprefix" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name=".ui.view.Acitivity2"
android:configChanges="orientation|screenSize"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:launchMode="singleTop"/>
<activity
android:name=".ui.view.Acitivity3"
android:configChanges="orientation|screenSize"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:launchMode="singleTop"/>
A possible workaround for market launches. The market launches the main activity on top of other activities. We never want this to happen. Instead, we should check if we are the root and if not, we finish the current. Add following code on your launcher activity onCreate()
if (!isTaskRoot()) {
final Intent intent = getIntent();
if (intent.hasCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_LAUNCHER) &&
Intent.ACTION_MAIN.equals(intent.getAction())) {
finish();
return;
}
}

Is there a way to make my app the only running app in a device, what I mean is the only visible and open app? Once the device booted, the app will launch automatically while any tap to settings at status bar, back, home and recent apps button are disabled. Probably a custom Android OS is required or rooting the device will be enough? We plan to have a set of devices where users can only operate with one app. Thanks
You need to be able to remove current launcher app to the system part of the device.
Then it's as simple as:
Adding android:launchMode="singleTask" to activity tag in AndroidManifest.xml
Adding <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" /> and
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" /> to your intent filter
The end result should look similar to this:
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.app.MainActivity"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
I have created an android app using android studio. When i run my code on the IDE, its runs as expected on the connected phone. The problem is, it does not leave behind an icon on my phone to use it next time. I will again have to run from android studio to use the app. This was fine initially, i don't realize what made the icon vanish. The app is also present in the settings.
When i go to
Settings->apps
i can very well find my app over there. It is not disabled. I tried uninstalling the app and trying again. It still doesn't give me the icon.
I cleared defaults, forced closed and tried everything possible. Nothing is helping me.
Please help.

You should specify a different for every intent that can launch your app. So one for the BROWSER category with your url data, and one for the LAUNCHER category.
From the App Manifest Guide.
Components advertise their capabilities — the kinds of intents they can respond to — through intent filters. Since the Android system must learn which intents a component can handle before it launches the component, intent filters are specified in the manifest as elements. A component may have any number of filters, each one describing a different capability.
Your code would become something like:
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE" />
<data
android:host="www.chillumapp.com"
android:pathPrefix="/chillum"
android:scheme="http" />
</intent-filter>
I am developing an application which is replacement of Google Now.
My application is already being launched when swiped up.

Some application in market can do this and there is a feature in Cyanogenmod already. So it is possible, but how?
Thanks
EDIT :
After a few restarts it shows icon properly. I may need find a way to force it. Maybe i could restart SystemUI but how ? :)

I have created app to act like an home launcher. So when user clicks on the home button I get Complete action using Launcher or my app's name say for example "myhomelauncher".
When I click on home button and click myhomelauncher my application loads everything from first perfectly fine. Now when I am in the second screen in my application say I am looking at activity 2 in my app and now I click on Home button and click myhomelauncher I endup getting the same activity 2 windows it is not reloading. (It should reload and show up activity 1 rather than 2)
I have seen lot of apps that can reload everytime I click their launcher. Why not mine?
Here is what I have done in my manifest.xml
<activity
android:name=".MyLauncher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:persistent="true"
android:screenOrientation="landscape">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
I am not sure where is the mistake?
Please have a look into the documentation - what can be of interest to your problem are the following settings:
android:clearTaskOnLaunch
android:launchMode
I would suspect setting android:launchMode to singleTask could solve your problem, altough be careful which side effects this will cause.
So:
<activity
android:name=".MyLauncher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:persistent="true"
android:screenOrientation="landscape"
android:launchMode="singleTask">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
should do the trick.
Look up launchMode. But be careful, with great power, comes great responsibility.
This is the relevant section in a menifest that seems to work for me. Note that I have put singleInstance in the launch mode because I don't want more than one of my app, ever.
<application android:icon="#drawable/icon" android:label="#string/app_name">
<activity android:name=".usbEffects"
android:theme="#android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar.Fullscreen"
android:windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysHidden"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:launchMode="singleInstance"
android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
My application is never shown in the RECENT APPS list whenever I put the following piece of code in my activity's manifest entry
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
If I remove above line it works fine. I've also made sure that the following flags are set to false-
android:noHistory="false"
android:excludeFromRecents="false"
But still its never displayed even if I launch app manually.
In case anybody wants to have a look the manifest, its-
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="8" />
<application
android:name="com.raj.poc.copypaste.MainApplication"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<activity
android:name=".CopyPasteActivity"
android:launchMode="singleTop"
android:noHistory="false"
android:excludeFromRecents="false"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<action android:name="android.intent.action.SEARCH_LONG_PRESS" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
It may also happen if you set
<activity... android:label=""/>
for your main Activity
This is the only activity in your application, right?
You are using the category tag twice. You have written in your code
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
so you have already selected the category. When you add a new activity then you will write the Default category tag.
