After searching for some time, I still didn't find the solution to my problem and since I'm a beginner, I don't really know what to do. I want to change the layout/fragment file when I click on another tab but it should still be connected to my MainActivity. The code is the Android Studio example code.

I don't think you need to add mTabLayout.onTabSelectedListener, just try removing that and try again.
On clicking tabs, it should immediately change the tabs, but on swiping it should swipe smoothly.
Title strip which indicates the selected tab does not automatically move to the next tab on one swipe. It moves accordingly to the swipe gesture for instance if you swipe just a little strip will move just a little even if it indicating the same tab.
I want to implement tab layout in fragment as user will be navigating on this page from navigation drawer.

If the fragments are empty this behaviour is observed. So just add your layouts in the respective fragments and it will resolve the issue.
I would like to implement a ListFragment in an Activity that uses a TabLayout, so that I can swipe between the different lists. In the end it should become a booking application so that you can choose between different disciplines and book a certain time slot withing it. However so far I only achieve to do either a ListActivity OR the tabbed activity (the standard one from android studio) but not both. Would be glad if someone could help on this.

What is the correct way to have multiple fragments in an activity?
You can do it by using SectionsPagerAdapter (Swipe View) or by NavigationDrawer (Navigation drawer). I have used swipe view for one of my applications. Here is the codes.

From what I understand from this thread, fragments can be easily replaced with another.
However in my case, I have 2 fragments combined in scrollable Activity, so when I say "move", I mean going from the fragment left to the right or right to the left without replacing any fragment with another. Is this somehow possible?
you could use ViewPager for that. And on your adapter class you will have to switch between the fragments via getItem(). Eclipse/new AndroidProject/ swipe with/out tabs. And check the example code generated by Android.
