I've set up a popup menu and setted an onMenuItemClickListener all fine, I want to have a 'Block' item in the menu and when clicked it should change its title (or set visibility to gone) to 'Unblock', I'll be grateful for any help .
In the onMenuItemClickListener method you should write following piece of code and you're done.
if(item.getVisibility==View.VISIBLE) {
item.setVisibility(View.GONE)
} else {
item.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE)
}
Support that you have a menu file in res/menu folder.
main_menu.xml
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item
android:id="#+id/item_block"
android:title="Block"/>
</menu>
MainActivity.java
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main_menu, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.item_block:
// Set title to "Unblock"
item.setTitle("UnBlock");
// Or set visibility to GONE
// item.setVisible(false);
return true;
default:
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}

I have added two menu item . Both of them works good but whenever i press menu button new menu items appear beside the old one . Like below u can see
below is my menu item xml
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto">
<item
android:title="Search"
android:icon="#drawable/search_white_24dp"
android:id="#+id/searchmenu"
app:showAsAction="always">
</item>
<item
android:icon="#drawable/settings_white_24dp"
android:title="Setting"
android:id="#+id/settingmenu"
app:showAsAction="always"
/>
</menu>
and here is my code
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.searchmenu:
editText = DuwaManager.openSearchBox(this,
getSupportActionBar(), "DuwaListView");
break;
case R.id.settingmenu:
break;
case R.id.home:
NavUtils.navigateUpFromSameTask(this);
break;
}
please help where i am wrong ?
Sorry this will get to long but , I have second Question
2) My second question i have another menu. xml in which there is share icon in place of search icon , But when i am trying to show on action bar with same code menu item does not show on action bar . below is my another menu xml
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
>
<item
android:title="Share"
android:icon="#drawable/share_white"
android:id="#+id/share_tarika"
app:showAsAction="always"
/>
<item android:title="Setting"
android:icon="#drawable/settings_white_24dp"
android:id="#id/settingmenu"
app:showAsAction="always"/>
</menu>
and its code
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.tarika_menu, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.share_tarika:
break;
case R.id.settingmenu:
break;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
Try this
#Override
public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu ) {
menu.clear();// use menu.clear
MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
inflater.inflate(R.menu."your current activity name ", menu);
return true;
}
use menu.clear()
The best to do is as this :
#Override
public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu ) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu."your current activity name ", menu);
return true;
}
if you have just one menu. Then set menu from Activity page and return true then no need to clear menu. and no duplicate menu will appear.
But if you use two fragment and have to change activity menu as per fragment then only need to clear menu and reset it with new one.
And if you are using onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) in fragment then remove them.
Trying to add actionar icons to actionbar and i'm using support library here is link i'm following developerspage
and here is my code to implement it
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu items for use in the action bar
MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
inflater.inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
if (item != null && item.getItemId() == R.id.toggle) {
if (mDrawerLayout.isDrawerOpen(Gravity.RIGHT)) {
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(Gravity.RIGHT);
} else {
mDrawerLayout.openDrawer(Gravity.RIGHT);
}
}
return true;
}
and menu.xml is
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<item
android:id="#+id/toggle"
android:icon="#drawable/menu"
android:orderInCategory="100"
android:title="menutoggle"/>
In your xml, you can include this in each item you want to be clickable:
android:onClick="aRandomMethod"
Then in your activity, you must implement a method that supports the click, in this case, a method called aRandomMethod, like this:
public void aRandomMethod(MenuItem item){
/// stuff to do when you click in the button
}
If you want your icon to be always displayed in the action bar, add:
android:showAsAction="always"
The onOptionsItemSelected method that you have in your code is when you have the settings icon (three small dots) and then a submenu in the icon; is to handle the submenu.
The problem is, that if I press the hardware button for the OptionsMenu, the app freezes and after a half second the fragment view disappears. There is no LogCat error, this is some kind of confusing me. The menu is not working in one out of six fragments. Same problem happens in every fragment.
I want to create an OptionsMenu with the following code.
The OptionsMenu is created in the activity, where the fragments get shown.
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu items for use in the action bar
MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
inflater.inflate(R.menu.main_activity_actions, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// call ActionBarDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(), if it returns true
// then it has handled the app icon touch event
if (actionBarDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
//return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
// Handle presses on the action bar items
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.action_add:
add();
return true;
case R.id.action_logoff:
Intent i = new Intent(this, Login.class);
startActivity(i);
return true;
default:
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}
XML: main_activity_actions.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item android:id="#+id/action_add"
android:title="#string/action_add"
android:showAsAction="ifRoom" />
<item android:id="#+id/action_logoff"
android:title="Ausloggen"
android:showAsAction="ifRoom"/>
</menu>
I tried switching around the return statment to true and super.onOptionsItemSelected(item); but nothing changes. The App is developed for Android 2.3
Maybe there are some problems with the hardwarebutton and Fragments in Android version < 3.0.
Here is a guide, how to implement a Actionbar with a softwarebased solution:
http://hmkcode.com/add-actionbar-to-android-2-3-x/
Try to return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu) instead true
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
inflater.inflate(R.menu.main_activity_actions, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
I have the following in my activity (sorry new to Java/Android):
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.options, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
switch(item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.selectItem:
// menu.add(...) --> how to get the menu instance?
return true;
default:
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}
I am wondering, how can I access a menu object in onOptionsItemSelected? For example, how would I go about adding a new view to the options menu based on the selection of an existing menu item? Is the answer related to "onPrepareOptionsMenu"?
you should use SubMenu for such things ... remeber that you cant add submenu to another submenu ... so only Menu->Submenu is possible you can't do stuff like this Menu->Submenu->Submenu (while Submenu is Dialog with choices)
Hi i'm trying to show the menu when the user presses the menu button. I'm using the code from the Documentation but the options menu won't show up. I guess i should have a listener for this menu button, but how?? This is my class so far:
public class AppMenu extends Activity {
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.about);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
inflater.inflate(R.menu.appmenu, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle item selection
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.hello:
sayHello();
return true;
case R.id.bye:
finish();
return true;
default:
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}
}
Here is my xml file
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item android:id="#+id/hello"
android:title="Hello"
android:icon="#drawable/icon"/>
<item android:id="#+id/bye"
android:title="Bye" />
</menu>
Thanks !
This answer is in response to the comment discussion on the question.
You can't have to menu appear outside of your Activity. That means you have to start your Activity and then from inside your Activity you'll be able to get the menu appear on a menu button press.
