What is the difference between notificationManager.notify and startForeground in Android? - android

I am just curious to know what are the differences between NotificationManager.notify and startForeground in Android.

Using NotificationManager.notify you can post as many updates to a notification as you like including adjustments to progress bars via Noticiation.Builder.setProgress in this way you only show one notification to the User, and its the one required by startForeground.
When you want to update a Notification set by startForeground(), simply build a new notication and then use NotificationManager to notify it.
The KEY point is to use the same notification id.
I didn't test the scenario of repeatedly calling startForeground() to update the Notification, but I think that using NotificationManager.notify would be better.
Updating the Notification will not remove the Service from the foreground status (this can be done only by calling stopForground.
Here is an example:

Is there any Android notifications setContentTitle and setContextText magic values?

I'm currently working on a library with android support.
I'm being asked to notify user on foreground service start.
The notification must contain "ApplicationName" as title, and "ApplicationName is running" as text. The notification icon has to be the same as the launcher one.
The target API level is 26.
The notification did not work because the previous developper forgot to open the notification chanel. This is now fixed, we have the notification that pops correctly. And the label are matching expectation.
But now i'm questioning why the notification contains the expected values. I could not find any reference in the javadoc.
The following code will display the notification as expectecd the application's name as title and the text "ApplicationName is running" :

How to make android lollipop notification dismissable on lockscreen?

On lollipop, If the user has a pin set then some notifications aren't able to be swiped away. they act like a persistent notification when attempting to be dismissed.
Some apps notifications are able to be swiped away on the lockscreen without unlocking.
I have only tested this with hide sensitive notification content, does a flag set change this ability?
How do I achieve this?
This flag makes your notification stick:
Notification.FLAG_ONGOING_EVENT;
If you leave it out you can remove it. If you put it in, it sticks.

This is how you can remove the notification from within the code:

As you see, you can get the notification from the NotificationManager by the NOTIFICATION_ID you used to make it. This is just a number i made up.

This is quite simple. You have to call cancel or cancelAll on your NotificationManager. The parameter of the cancel method is the ID of the notification that should be canceled.

You can also call cancelAll on the notification manager, so you don't even have to worry about the notification ids.

does't work canceling the Notification & notification still appears in the status bar. In this particular case, you will solve these by 2 ways:
1> Using stopForeground( false ) inside service:
stopForeground( false );

2> Destroy that service class with calling activity:

NotificationManager.cancel(id) is the correct answer. Yet you can remove in Android Oreo and later notifications by deleting the whole notification channel. This should delete all messages in the deleted channel.
Here is the example from the Android documentation:
