Iam new to programming... still a beginner in Android...
I have a Login Activity, when I clikc submit it goes to another Activity.
I have an EditBox which it enters.
I want to detect if the EditBox is empty
If it is empty I want to avoid clicking a button which I am clicking using the
etNumber.setOnFocusChangeListener(new View.OnFocusChangeListener()
This will save the data to a csv file...
The idea is that any empty editText will not be saved... and thus have empty lines in the csv...
There are many ways to do it. But for the above problem statement the below code should work.
<Your EditText>.setOnFocusChangeListener(new OnFocusChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onFocusChange(View v, boolean hasFocus) {
if(!editText.getText().toString().trim().isEmpty()){
//Your code
}
}
});
EditText editText = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.edittext);
if(TextUtils.isEmpty(editText.getText().toString())) {
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "EditText is Empty", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
else {
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "EditText is Not Empty", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
If you are using Kotlin (which you should) then below 1 line statement uses the kotlin inline extension to check for the emptiness,
editText.text.isNotEmpty().apply {
//do something
}
here editText is id of your edit text , which you can get with below code,
val editText= findViewById(R.id.et_message) as EditText

I want to perform many task in one Edittext. Like when I edit the first number in edittext it store in string value and edittext may be null after that when I enter 2nd number in same edittext 2nd number may also save in another string. Then after some action perform answer show in Textview.
Please help me out...
private void save_on_cick_listen(){
button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
if(save == 0){
// save first string
editText.getText().clear(); //or you can use editText.setText("");
save+;
} else if (save == 1){
// save second string
editText.getText().clear(); //or you can use editText.setText("");
save+;
}
}
});
}
Sorry taking your time, am asked a question in a very wrong way.
So what I doing now, a small notepad program where the title and content saved of the note to the SQLite database.
This part working as should, but I don't have any input check and the app saving the note with empty title and content.
there is my current code for this :
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
dba = new DatabaseHandler(MainActivity.this);
title = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.titleEditText);
content = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.wishEditText);
saveButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.saveButton);
saveButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
saveToDB();
}
});
}
private void saveToDB() {
MyNote wish = new MyNote();
wish.setTitle(title.getText().toString().trim());
wish.setContent(content.getText().toString().trim());
dba.addWishes(wish);
dba.close();
//clear
title.setText("");
content.setText("");
Intent i = new Intent(MainActivity.this, DisplayNotesActivity.class);
startActivity(i);
How can I implement a basic input checking and avoid the saving of empty notes?
my first idea was to check the emptiness of the input and drop a toast message, tried several solutions from not, but not worked me.
many thanks
C
You have to be sure you're using the same EditText variable which in this case I think is title.
EditText title = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.titleEditText);
if(title.getText().toString().isEmpty()) {
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "Input Text Is Empty.. Please Enter Some Text", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
else {
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, title.getText().toString(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}
});
U need to specyfi your question.
But from what i undestood u don't know how check editText is empty and don't know why can't write into text box.
First easy method is just check length of string if it bigger than 0 that's meen it's not empty
EditText title = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.IDEDITTEXT);
if(String.valueOf(title.getText()).length()>0){
//do something
}else{
//do something
}
And about second (i thing question) is check your xml file (layout) does your editText is enabled and not is textViev.
Btw your code is hard to read like your question:)
EditText title = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.titleEditText);
if(title.getText().toString().length()<=0) {
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "Input Text Is Empty.. Please Enter Some Text", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
else {
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, title.getText().toString(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}
});
try this code...
I want to append text to an android EditText view but I want that text to not be present in the popup editor. To be clear I want to put units in the EditText. So for example "10 gallons" but when the popup editor is displayed I only want to see and edit "10". Then when the value is returned I want the " gallons" appended back on to the view.
Is this possible in an automatic way or do I have to track onTouch() events and have a listener for the keyboard and manually append the units again?
I believe the onFocusChange method for EditText views would detect when a user is editing the text field. Try something like this..
EditText et = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editText);
et.setOnFocusChangeListener(new View.OnFocusChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onFocusChange(View view, boolean b) {
if (b) {
((EditText)view).setText(String.valueOf(value));
} else {
value = Integer.valueOf(((EditText)view).getText().toString());
((EditText)view).setText(value + " gallons");
}
}
});
I have certain edit text fields. I save the data entered in these fields to my database, which opens in another activity.
But I have a problem when I navigate back to the first activity (Using the back button on the hardware of the emulator) to add next record, the edit field data is retained.
I tried onPause() and myEditText.setText("") also. But the dat simple clears off the edit fields but as soon as I click the fields to enter data again the previous data reappears.
I also tried using finish() and everything works except I have to go through all the activities again to enter the data.
Try this one also.
submit.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
String uid=editText1.getText().toString();
String pwd=editText2.getText().toString();
editText1.setText("");
editText2.setText("");
}
});
}
Just to make sure that I understood you clearly. You enter text in EditText boxes. Then press a button which takes you to a new activity. But, when you go back to the old activity the text in the EditText boxes doesn't get clear. Try to do editText.setText(""); when you click the button. I know you said that you tried it, but did you try it inside the function which listens for the button click?
public EditText editText;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
editText = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.editText1);
editText.setOnClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// As soon as button is clicked, set is as empty
editText.setText("");
}
Try and see if it makes a difference.
you can use this library to clear text by a clear icon
http://droidparts.org/widgets.html#clearableedittext
Use this:
editText.getText().clear();
after onclick of any action do below step
((EditText) findViewById(R.id.yoursXmlId)).setText("");
or else
write this in XML file
EditText
android:hint="Enter Name" />
i did this way.try
You can use:
myEditText.setText(null);
I'm making an app for Android, and if you click the calculate button on one of the pages, without anything entered in the text boxes, it force closes. Some users were wondering if this could be fixed, so I was wondering if there was a way to make the onClickListener execute only if there is something inside the EditText.
You have to check it yourseft, such as:
final EditText editText = ...; // your edit
// check in your onClickListener
if (editText.getText().toString().isEmpty){ // Check if your EditText is
}else{ // If your EditTexit is not null
}
Please, search google before asking any question!
You can try following code,
suppose you have a EditText txtNum1 & txtNum2 , so onClickListener() method you can write following condition
public void onClick(View v)
{
if ( v == cmdCalculate )
{
if ( !txtNum1.getText().equals("") && !txtNum2.getText().equals("") )
{
// your calculation code
}
else
{
// post error msg code
}
}
}
