The requestLocationUpdates to get GPS not work - android

I am new to Android and try to have one example to get GPS location.
I surf through the web and have following code.
The program will crash once I click the button to get a GPS.
I found it seems something wrong when I call locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(commandStr, 1000, 0, locationListener);
I trace it into requestLocationUpdates and found it crashed at Looper class
public final class Looper {
Looper(boolean quitAllowed) {
throw new RuntimeException("Stub!");
}
public static void prepare() {
throw new RuntimeException("Stub!");
}
public static void prepareMainLooper() {
throw new RuntimeException("Stub!");
}
public static Looper getMainLooper() {
throw new RuntimeException("Stub!");
}
public static void loop() {
throw new RuntimeException("Stub!");
}
Following are the complete code, ,dose anyone know which part of program is wrong
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
private TextView tvLocation;
private Button btGetLocation;
private LocationManager locationManager;
private String commandStr;
private static final int MY_PERMISSION_ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION = 11;
public LocationListener locationListener = new LocationListener() {
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
tvLocation.setText("經度" + location.getLongitude() + "\n緯度" + location.getLatitude());
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String s, int i, Bundle bundle) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String s) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String s) {
}
};
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
commandStr = LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER;
// LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER //使用GPS定位
// LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER //使用網路定位
tvLocation = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView);
btGetLocation = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button);
btGetLocation.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
locationManager = (LocationManager) getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE);
// LocationManager可以用來獲取當前的位置,追蹤設備的移動路線
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(MainActivity.this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(MainActivity.this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
// TODO: Consider calling
// ActivityCompat#requestPermissions
// here to request the missing permissions, and then overriding
// public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, String[] permissions,
// int[] grantResults)
// to handle the case where the user grants the permission. See the documentation
// for ActivityCompat#requestPermissions for more details.
ActivityCompat.requestPermissions(MainActivity.this,
new String[]{Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION},
MY_PERMISSION_ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION);
return;
}
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(commandStr, 1000, 0, locationListener);
// 事件的條件設定為時間間隔1秒,距離改變0米,設定監聽位置變化
Location location = locationManager.getLastKnownLocation(commandStr);
if (location != null)
tvLocation.setText("經度"+location.getLongitude()+"\n緯度"+location.getLatitude());
else
tvLocation.setText("定位中");
// location.getLongitude() //取得經度
// location.getLatitude() //取得緯度
// location.getAltitude() //取得海拔高度
}
});
}
}

Here some code example:
public class Activity extends AppCompatActivity{
//variables for GPS data
private LocationManager locationManager;
private Location location;
private int minTime = 1000 //=1s
private int minDistance = 5 //=5m
private List<String> providers;
private final ActivityLocationListener locationListener = new ActivityLocationListener();
#Override
protected void onCreate(){
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.your_layout_file);
locationManager = (LocationManager) getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE);
providers = locationManager.getProviders(true);
//this will print you the available providers in your LogCat
//in some virtual devices network is not available
Log.d(NoteMapActivity.this.getClass().getSimpleName(), "available providers:\n" + providers);
}
public void onButtClick(View view){
this.requestLocationUpdates();
}
public void requestLocationUpdates(){
locationManager = (LocationManager) getSystemService(LOCATON_SERVICE);
//with this following code you will call onLocationChanged()
if (providers.contains("gps")){
//"permisson check"
try {
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates("gps", minTime, minDistance, locationListener);
} catch (SecurityException ex){
Log.e(getClass().getSimpleName(), "no permisson: " + ex.toString());
}
//if gps is not available you can use "network" or "passive" instead, maybe with if-else conditions
}
//create a class inside of this one!
class ActivityLocationListener implements LocationListener{
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
currentLocation = location;
Log.d(NoteMapActivity.this.getClass().getSimpleName(), "received location:\n" + currentLocation.getLatitude() + ", " + currentLocation.getLongitude());
addCurrentLocationMarkerToMap();
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {
}
}
}

How to send user location data to server every five second using restful API even app is closed in android?
Please help me
you can create a background service that it works when user lock screen or close your app from background
you must create service with this way:
first create a Service class like this:
public class LocationService extends Service implements GoogleApiClient.ConnectionCallbacks {
public static double latitude;
public static double longitude;
private int retryGPS = 0;
private int retryNetwork = 0;
private Handler handler;
private Runnable runnable;
private GoogleApiClient mGoogleApiClient;
private LocationManager mLocationManager;
private LocationListener[] mLocationListeners = new LocationListener[]{
new LocationListener(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER),
};
private static final int LOCATION_INTERVAL = 0;
private static final float LOCATION_DISTANCE = 1;
private static final String TAG = "LocationService";
#Override
public void onCreate() {
buildGoogleApiClient();
initializeLocationManager();
locationRequest();
handler = new Handler();
runnable = new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
sendLocation();
}
};
sendLocation();
}
protected synchronized void buildGoogleApiClient() {
mGoogleApiClient = new GoogleApiClient.Builder(this)
.addConnectionCallbacks(this)
.addApi(LocationServices.API)
.build();
}
private void initializeLocationManager() {
if (mLocationManager == null) {
mLocationManager = (LocationManager) getApplicationContext().getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
}
}
private void locationRequest() {
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
return;
}
mLocationManager.requestLocationUpdates(
LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, LOCATION_INTERVAL, LOCATION_DISTANCE,
mLocationListeners[0]);
}
private void sendLocation() {
//TODO: you can use location here
handler.postDelayed(runnable,5000);
}
#Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) {
return null;
}
#Override
public int onStartCommand(final Intent intent, int flags, int startId) {
if (!mGoogleApiClient.isConnected())
mGoogleApiClient.connect();
return START_STICKY;
}
#Override
public void onConnected(Bundle bundle) {
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
return;
}
Location location = LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.getLastLocation(mGoogleApiClient);
if (location != null) {
latitude = location.getLatitude();
longitude = location.getLongitude();
} else {
try {
Thread.sleep(3000);
onConnected(null);
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
#Override
public void onConnectionSuspended(int i) {
}
#Override
public void onDestroy() {
handler.removeCallbacks(runnable);
if (mLocationManager != null) {
for (LocationListener mLocationListener : mLocationListeners) {
try {
mLocationManager.removeUpdates(mLocationListener);
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
super.onDestroy();
}
private class LocationListener implements android.location.LocationListener, ActivityCompat.OnRequestPermissionsResultCallback {
Location mLastLocation;
public LocationListener(String provider) {
Log.d(TAG, "LocationListener: " + provider);
mLastLocation = new Location(provider);
}
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(final Location location) {
mLastLocation.set(location);
latitude = location.getLatitude();
longitude = location.getLongitude();
Log.d(TAG, "onLocationChanged: { latitude: " + latitude + " ,longitude: " + longitude + " , accuracy: " + location.getAccuracy() + " }");
}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {
Log.d(TAG, "onProviderDisabled: " + provider);
}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {
Log.d(TAG, "onProviderEnabled: " + provider);
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {
Log.d(TAG, "onStatusChanged: " + status);
}
#Override
public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, #NonNull String[] permissions, #NonNull int[] grantResults) {

}
}
then register service in manifest:
<service
android:name=".service.LocationService"
android:enabled="true"
android:process=":process" />
then start service from any activity or fragment :
public static void mStopService(Context context) {
context.stopService(new Intent(context, LocationService.class));
}
public static void mStartService(Context context) {
context.startService(new Intent(context, LocationService.class));
}
if you want to make your code run even when the app is closed you need to use services, services can run in the background even if the app is closed, and you may need to use a broadcast receiver with the service to keep running it every time it finishes.
this is the Service:
public class myService extends Service {
public static int counter = 0;
public myReceiver myReceiver = new myReceiver();
#Override
public void onCreate() {
super.onCreate();
//this line register the Receiver for the first time
myService.this.registerReceiver(myReceiver, new IntentFilter("com.example.myApp"));
}
#Override
public int onStartCommand(Intent intent, int flags, int startId) {
//Here you have to put the code that gets the location and send it
}
#Override
public void onDestroy() {
super.onDestroy();
//here you sent a broadcast message to start the reciever
//note that the broadcast message that you send has to be unique writing you package name will be fine ex: com.example.myApp
Intent sendBroadCast = new Intent("com.example.myApp");
sendBroadcast(sendBroadCast);
}
#Nullable
#Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) {
return null;
}
and this is the broadcast receiver:
public class myReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {
#Override
public void onReceive(final Context context, Intent intent) {
if("com.example.myApp".equals(intent.getAction())){
//the handler is used as a timer here
Handler handler = new Handler();
handler.postDelayed(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
Intent myServ = new Intent(context, myService.class);
try {
context.startService(myServ);
}catch (Exception e){
}
}
},5000);
}
}
}

How to lock my screen and my app will continue running

I have an app that records users location and draws a polyline.I want to know how to do that when the user locks his screen.I've implemented a foreground service so the user can do whatever he wants in his phone but it doesn't work if the user turns the screen off.Any ideas?I've seen the wake lock but they are only for not letting the screen turned off.

Here is the foreground service that runs when the user presses a button from the activity

How can I get continuous location updates in Android like in Google Maps?

I'm building a friend tracking android app. While my friend activated the app and goes away along with his GPS and cellular data on, I need to track him on my device. That's the concept.
I've implemented LocationListener class and now I can get the last updated location either from Gps or Network but is not updated unless I launch Google Maps and return to my application. After googling, I learned that location cache is updated only by GMaps.!
Is there an alternate way to continuously update location?
What if when I need to get continues location after the device locked without making use of Wakelock?
This is my location listener class:
package com.amazinginside;

This my onCreate() method:
#Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
//CREATE A BUTTON HANDLER
Button start_btn=(Button)findViewById(R.id.start_location_streaming);
//ON BUTTON CLICK EVENT
start_btn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener()
{
#Override

//REPEAT A METHORD AT SPECIFIC INTERVALS
Timer myTimer = new Timer();
myTimer.schedule(new TimerTask()
{
#Override

{

}
}, 0, 8000);
}
}); }
These are other methods:
private void TimerMethod()
{
//START METHORD
this.runOnUiThread(Timer_Tick);
}
//LOCATION REPORTING METHORD
private Runnable Timer_Tick = new Runnable()
{
public void run()
{

}
};

//CREATE A LOCATION CLASS INSTANCE
AmazingLocation gps = new AmazingLocation(this);
//RETRIVE LOCATION
double latitude = gps.getLatitude();
double longitude = gps.getLongitude();
//RETURN LOCATION
LatLng loc=new LatLng(latitude,longitude);
return loc;
}
Now the problem is, the toast just shows previously known the location and not updating unless I opened Google Maps and returned.
Any help will be great for me.
Use Fused location provider in Android set your interval in that:
For an example create your activity like this:
public class LocationActivity extends Activity implements
LocationListener,
GoogleApiClient.ConnectionCallbacks,
GoogleApiClient.OnConnectionFailedListener {
private static final String TAG = "LocationActivity";
private static final long INTERVAL = 1000 * 10;
private static final long FASTEST_INTERVAL = 1000 * 5;
Button btnFusedLocation;
TextView tvLocation;
LocationRequest mLocationRequest;
GoogleApiClient mGoogleApiClient;
Location mCurrentLocation;
String mLastUpdateTime;
protected void createLocationRequest() {
mLocationRequest = new LocationRequest();

Google play services required:
To get continiuos location update, you can refer to the above provided answers .
But You can also make use of LocationServices which is faster than other approaches and much easy and efficient to get location.
This approach is quit long but kindly follow all the provided steps
So let me provide a brief working :
Add these two dependencies in your gradle app file
implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps:17.0.0'
implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-location:17.0.0'
Add these permissions in the manifest file outside applicationtag
Declare variable outside onCreate
private FusedLocationProviderClient fusedLocationClient;
private LocationRequest mLocationRequest;
private LocationCallback mlocationCallback;
private LocationSettingsRequest.Builder builder;
private static final int REQUEST_CHECK_SETTINGS = 102;
Now inside onCreate :
fusedLocationClient = LocationServices.getFusedLocationProviderClient(this);
fetchLastLocation();
mlocationCallback = new LocationCallback() {
#Override
public void onLocationResult(LocationResult locationResult) {
if (locationResult == null) {
return;
}
for (Location location : locationResult.getLocations()) {
// Update UI with location data
// ...
Log.e("CONTINIOUSLOC: ", location.toString());
}
};
};
mLocationRequest = createLocationRequest();
builder = new LocationSettingsRequest.Builder()
.addLocationRequest(mLocationRequest);
checkLocationSetting(builder);
No define fetchLastLocation method
private void fetchLastLocation() {
if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.M) {
if (checkSelfPermission(Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && checkSelfPermission(Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
// TODO: Consider calling
// Activity#requestPermissions
// here to request the missing permissions, and then overriding
// public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, String[] permissions,
// int[] grantResults)
// to handle the case where the user grants the permission. See the documentation
// for Activity#requestPermissions for more details.
// Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "Permission not granted, Kindly allow permission", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
showPermissionAlert();
return;
}
}
fusedLocationClient.getLastLocation()
.addOnSuccessListener(this, new OnSuccessListener() {
#Override
public void onSuccess(Location location) {
// Got last known location. In some rare situations this can be null.
if (location != null) {
// Logic to handle location object
Log.e("LAST LOCATION: ", location.toString()); // You will get your last location here
}
}
});
}
Now define other two method for permission request
#Override
public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, #NonNull String[] permissions, #NonNull int[] grantResults) {
switch (requestCode) {
case 123: {
// If request is cancelled, the result arrays are empty.
if (grantResults[0] == PackageManager.PERMISSION_DENIED) {
// permission was denied, show alert to explain permission
showPermissionAlert();
}else{
//permission is granted now start a background service
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(getApplicationContext(), Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) == PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED
&& ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(getApplicationContext(), Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) == PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
fetchLastLocation();
}
}
}
}
}
private void showPermissionAlert(){
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(MainHomeActivity.this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED
&& ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(MainHomeActivity.this, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
ActivityCompat.requestPermissions(MainHomeActivity.this, new String[]{Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION}, 123);
}
}
now define createLocationRequest method and checkLocationSetting method :
protected LocationRequest createLocationRequest() {
LocationRequest mLocationRequest = LocationRequest.create();
mLocationRequest.setInterval(30000);
mLocationRequest.setFastestInterval(10000);
mLocationRequest.setSmallestDisplacement(30);
mLocationRequest.setPriority(LocationRequest.PRIORITY_HIGH_ACCURACY);
return mLocationRequest;
}
private void checkLocationSetting(LocationSettingsRequest.Builder builder) {
SettingsClient client = LocationServices.getSettingsClient(this);
Task<LocationSettingsResponse> task = client.checkLocationSettings(builder.build());
task.addOnSuccessListener(this, new OnSuccessListener<LocationSettingsResponse>() {
#Override
public void onSuccess(LocationSettingsResponse locationSettingsResponse) {
// All location settings are satisfied. The client can initialize
// location requests here.
// ...
startLocationUpdates();
return;
}
});
task.addOnFailureListener(this, new OnFailureListener() {
#Override
public void onFailure(#NonNull final Exception e) {
if (e instanceof ResolvableApiException) {
// Location settings are not satisfied, but this can be fixed
AlertDialog.Builder builder1 = new AlertDialog.Builder(mContext);
builder1.setTitle("Continious Location Request");
builder1.setMessage("This request is essential to get location update continiously");
builder1.create();
builder1.setPositiveButton("OK", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int which) {
ResolvableApiException resolvable = (ResolvableApiException) e;
try {
resolvable.startResolutionForResult(MainHomeActivity.this,
REQUEST_CHECK_SETTINGS);
} catch (IntentSender.SendIntentException e1) {
e1.printStackTrace();
}
}
});
builder1.setNegativeButton("Cancel", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int which) {
Toast.makeText(mContext, "Location update permission not granted", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
});
builder1.show();
}
}
});
}
#Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, #Nullable Intent data) {
if (requestCode == REQUEST_CHECK_SETTINGS) {
if (resultCode == RESULT_OK) {
// All location settings are satisfied. The client can initialize
// location requests here.
startLocationUpdates();
}
else {
checkLocationSetting(builder);
}
}
}
now atlast define startLocationUpdates and stopLocationUpdates method :
public void startLocationUpdates() {
if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.M) {
if (checkSelfPermission(Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && checkSelfPermission(Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
// TODO: Consider calling
// Activity#requestPermissions
// here to request the missing permissions, and then overriding
// public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, String[] permissions,
// int[] grantResults)
// to handle the case where the user grants the permission. See the documentation
// for Activity#requestPermissions for more details.
return;
}
}
fusedLocationClient.requestLocationUpdates(mLocationRequest,
mlocationCallback,
null /* Looper */);
}
private void stopLocationUpdates() {
fusedLocationClient.removeLocationUpdates(mlocationCallback);
}
Note : Replace context with your class context and call stopLocationUpdates() inside onDestroy method of your class
Note : For any futher information or doubt you can refer to :
https://developer.android.com/training/location/retrieve-current
https://developer.android.com/training/location/change-location-settings
https://developer.android.com/training/location/receive-location-updates
You will get your location in Logcat.
Hope this will hope you or somebody else !
I believe rather than reinventing the wheel, you can use one of the third party libraries that are easy to implement and in this case, battery efficient. One of the library I found is SmartLocation. You can add the following dependency in your build.gradle (app) to start using the library.
compile 'io.nlopez.smartlocation:library:3.2.9'
After adding the dependency, you should rebuild the project to get the references.
As an example you can try the following code in your Activity.
Button start_btn=(Button)findViewById(R.id.start_location_streaming);
Context context = start_btn.getContext();
Handler handler = new Handler();
start_btn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
SmartLocation.with(context).location().start(locationListener);
}
});
OnLocationUpdatedListener locationListener = new OnLocationUpdatedListener({
#Override
public void onLocationUpdated(Location location) {
double lat = location.getLatitude();
double lng = location.getLongitude();
handler.postDelayed(locationRunnable,8000);
}
});
Runnable locationRunnable = new Runnable({
#Override
public void run() {
SmartLocation.with(context).location().start(locationListener);
}
});
You can stop location tracking in onStop() method
#Override
public void onStop() {
SmartLocation.with(context).location().stop();
super.onStop();
}
SmartLocation library will give you more than what is expected, just try that once.
Note: Make sure your application does have ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION (both) to have accurate results. Don't forget to ask for permissions at runtime for Android 6.0 and above.
You should use android services, rather than the app itself. This way you will achieve to run code continuously in the background and you will receive the location even if the app closes.

Why LocationManager is null after initialization? I'm trying to removeUpdates()

I have a class "OldLocationService" (generally I'm using fused location from GoogleApiClient but I keep that class in case of old Google Play):
public class OldLocationService {
static Location loc;
private static final String TAG = MainActivity.class.getSimpleName();
protected LocationManager service;
private final LocationListener mLocationListener = new LocationListener() {
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(final Location location) {
Log.d(TAG, "New location: " + location.toString());
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {
}
};
public void EnableGPS(String provider, Context ctx) {
service = (LocationManager) ctx.getSystemService(ctx.LOCATION_SERVICE);
boolean enabled = service.isProviderEnabled(provider);
if (enabled) {
service.requestLocationUpdates(provider, 10000, 0, mLocationListener, Looper.getMainLooper());
}
else
{
Log.d(TAG, "GPS is not enabled");
}
}
public void DisableGPS() {
try {
if (!(service==null)) {
service.removeUpdates(mLocationListener);
} else {
Log.d(TAG, "service is null");
}
} catch(Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
Somewhere in another class I'm calling:
OldLocationService OLS = new OldLocationService();
OLS.EnableGPS(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, mContext);
And I'm getting locations correctly. However, when I'm trying to disable GPS:
OldLocationService ols = new OldLocationService();
ols.DisableGPS();
Then in logcat I get:
service is null
Why I can't remove GPS updates? How to do that?
Sorry for my English errors,
Defozo
First of all don't make 2 instances of your OldLocationService class.. you must remove updates from the same instance from which you started them.. because each instance has its own copy of variables/fields, in your case protected LocationManager service;
OldLocationService ols = new OldLocationService(); // declare it globally
// in middle of some code
OLS.EnableGPS(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, mContext);
// more code here
If you're removing Location updates from a Service then you must put the code in it's onDestroy() method from the same instance:
public void onDestroy(){
ols.DisableGPS();
super.onDestroy();
}

Location in Android always returned null

I am a begginer in Android programming and I encountered a problem with displaying the current location of my phone using the NETWORK PROVIDER, with which I need some help.
Here is the code:
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
txtLat = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.txtLat);
txtLon = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.txtLon);
Log.d("ADebugTag", "WTF");
LocationManager locationManager = (LocationManager) this.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
LocationListener locationListener = new LocationListener() {
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
txtLat.setText(String.valueOf(location.getLatitude()));
txtLon.setText(String.valueOf(location.getLongitude()));
}
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {}
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {}
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {}
};
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, locationListener);
Log.d("ADebugTag", "WTF END");
}
I try to set the latitude and longitude of the location into the TextViews, but my app crashes when i try tu run it.
Also, I tried to print a full stack trace, but I couldn't find a method to make it work..
UPDATE: Thanks for all the replies :D - After posting this I realized I should have also posted the layout of the main activity, just in case.
<TextView
android:id = "#+id/txtLat"
android:layout_width="200dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="LATITUDINE" />
<TextView
android:id = "#+id/txtLon"
android:layout_width="200dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/txtLat"
android:text="LONGITUDINE" />
Also, I have tried to print something in logcat when the onLocationChanged method gets called, but the message is not displayed when I run the app, meaning that the method is not called.
I am running this app on an older device, using Android 2.3.6, maybe that is useful information as well.
It's highly possible that you are lacking the corresponding app rights. Make sure you added following lines to your manifest file:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE" />
<uses-permission android:name="com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.READ_GSERVICES" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
I am not sure about the first 2, but for sure you must have the coarse and fine location permissions.
Here's an example that I reuse in m apps, using a custom class to wrap the LocationListener:
import android.content.Context;
import android.location.Location;
import android.location.LocationListener;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.util.Log;
public class MyLocationListener implements LocationListener {
// GLOBALS
float currentLatitude = 0;
float currentLongitude = 0;
float currentAltitude = 0;
float currentAccuracy = 0;
float currentSpeed = 0;
float currentBearing = 0;
String currentProvider = "";
public MyLocationListener(Context context) {
super();
}
// Define all LocationListener methods
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
currentLatitude = (float)location.getLatitude();
currentLongitude = (float)location.getLongitude();
currentAltitude = (float)location.getAltitude();
currentAccuracy = (float)location.getAccuracy();
currentSpeed = (float)location.getSpeed();
currentBearing = (float)location.getBearing();
currentProvider = location.getProvider();
}
public void onProviderDisabled (String provider) {
//currentProvider = "";
Log.v(TAG, "Provider is " + provider);
}
public void onProviderEnabled (String provider) {
//currentProvider = provider;
Log.v(TAG, "Provider is " + provider);
}
public void onStatusChanged (String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {
Log.v(TAG, "Status is " + status);
}
// Custom Methods
public String getCurrentLatitude() {
String lat = Float.toString(currentLatitude);
return lat;
}
public String getCurrentLongitude() {
String lon = Float.toString(currentLongitude);
return lon;
}
public String getCurrentAltitude() {
String alt = Float.toString(currentAltitude);
return alt;
}
public String getCurrentAccuracy() {
String acc = Float.toString(currentAccuracy);
return acc;
}
public String getCurrentSpeed() {
String spd = Float.toString(currentSpeed);
return spd;
}
}
... and then in onCreate
// GPS
locationListener = new MyLocationListener(this); // instance of above class
// Runnable
handler = new Handler();
runnable = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
handler.postDelayed(this, REFRESH_RATE);
// Get Data
float lat = Float.parseFloat(locationListener.getCurrentLatitude());
float lon = Float.parseFloat(locationListener.getCurrentLongitude());
// Update Text
ActualLatitude.setText(locationListener.getCurrentLatitude());
ActualLongitude.setText(locationListener.getCurrentLongitude());
}
};
handler.postDelayed(runnable, REFRESH_RATE);
.. and then in onResume
#Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
locationManager = (LocationManager)getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, REFRESH_RATE, 5, locationListener);
locationManager.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);
}
.. and then in onDestroy
#Override
public void onDestroy() {
super.onDestroy();
// Kill Runnable
handler.removeCallbacks(runnable);
// Stop GPS
locationManager.removeUpdates(locationListener);
locationManager = null;
}
Some other notes:
make sure you have requested the COARSE_LOCATION and/or FINE_LOCATION in your AndroidManifest
double check the id's of your textviews - you said it was crashing and without seeing a stacktrace, for all we know the location stuff is fine but its crashing on a NPE!
Here is my current working code for getting user location in android:
public class MyApp extends Application{
private LocationManager locationManager;
private LocationListener listener;
#Override public void onCreate(){
super.onCreate();
}
public void acquireUserCoordinates(){
locationManager = (LocationManager)getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
if (locationManager.isProviderEnabled(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER)){
listener = new GpsListener();
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, listener);
}else {
if (locationManager.isProviderEnabled(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER)) {
listener = new GpsListener();
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0, listener);
}
}
}
private class GpsListener implements LocationListener {
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
if (location != null) {
double mLatitude = location.getLatitude();
double mLongitude = location.getLongitude();
EventBus.getDefault().post(new UserLocationAcquiredEvent(true, mLatitude, mLongitude));
try {
if (listener != null)
locationManager.removeUpdates(listener);
} catch (Exception e) {
}
locationManager = null;
} else {
}
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {
}
}
}
Now, you notice that I use EventBus library here to post results to the respective activity/fragment.
In your activity or fragment, you get the application instance (getApplication()) and call the acquireUserCoordinates() method then you can override onEvent(EventClassHere event) and then easily update the UI respectively (like dismiss dialog).
You can find EventBus here: EventBus
I hope this helps you.
Good luck and happy coding!
