I want to add some space before the GridLayout starts and I want to fit a button and textview there. I tried adding Space before GridLayout, but it didn't do anything. I could make a button and textview as 2 elements inside grid, but the positioning is then awkward.

But the strange thing that is happening is, the background image(bg_login) hides all the content in RelativeLayout, in the preview pane as well as when I run the app. I can't find out why this is happening! Please help.
I dont know what you want to do, are you want have multiple background in relative layouts when scrolled or not.
But i assuming you, the scroll view when have a children element with background is not best practice.
So scoll view must set to a children from parent have a background for good practice.

But it doesn't Work.
Your ScrollView has width and height that matches the parent. This means it takes up the entire space available leaving nothing for the RelativeLayout. You probably want to wrap what you already have inside a LinearLayout and then use layout_weight attribute to divide the space up.

Make your root a vertical linearlayout with a scrollview, to hold the scrollable views, and a RelativeLayout, to hold your buttons.
You can take advantage of the LinearLayout's weighting ability by applying a weight of 1 to the Scrollview so it takes up as much room it can while the button-holding-RelativeLayout will be the size of your biggest button.

The layout two is hidden after pressing a button with View.GONE, I want the layout two back when I swipe down on the screen, how can I do it, swipe down detection and getting the layout back.

Just use yourView.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE) on the View you want to make visible in your on swipe down method.
Hey all - is it possible to make an entire linear layout scrollable when it needs to be? (when all of the elements in the layout don't fit on the main screen)?
I know it is doable with views, etc...but is there a way to incorporate everything on the layout to be scrollable at the same time?
Maybe scrollable is not the right term...basically - if one of the elements (a button in this case) doesn't entirely make it onto the main screen of the phone and I need to slide a finger down to access it...if that makes sense.
A LinearLayout is a subclass of View, so anything you can do with a View you can with a Linear Layout.
So just use ScrollView with a single LinearLayout as a child

Yes you can make your whole view scrollable using ScrollView but since you can only contain one main child so you will have to add another LinearView View inside ScrollView and put your other views inside this.

you can make any layout scrollable. Just under <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> add these lines:

I have lot of items on the screen and I need to use the scrollbar so the user can scroll down. However, the scroll is either not visible or it's not working. How is it possible to add a scrollbar to a LinearLayout?

Here is how I did it by trial and error.
ScrollView - (the outer wrapper).
LinearLayout (child-1).
LinearLayout (child-1a).
LinearLayout (child-1b).
Since ScrollView can have only one child, that child is a linear layout. Then all the other layout types occur in the first linear layout. I haven't tried to include a relative layout yet, but they drive me nuts so I will wait until my sanity returns.
you need to use the following attribute and enclose it within the linear layout

You need to place ScrollView as the first child of Layout file and now put your linearlayout inside it. Now, android will decide on the basis of content and device size available whether to show a scrollable or not.
Make sure linearlayout has no sibling because ScrollView can not have more than one child.

Whenever you wanted to make a layout scrollable, you can use <ScrollView> With a layout or component in it.
You can add an atrribute in linearLayout : android:scrollbars="vertical"
