I got this relativelayout and on the design screen of android studio looks good
enter image description here
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:padding="8dp"
tools:context="com.checking.movi.movioperations.CartItems">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txtcartprod"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Productos seleccionados:"
/>
<androidx.recyclerview.widget.RecyclerView
android:id="#+id/recycler_cart"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="649dp"
android:layout_below="#+id/txtcartprod"
/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn_placeorder"
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:layout_below="#+id/recycler_cart"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/mybutton"
android:text="Continuar"
android:textColor="#ffffff" />
</RelativeLayout>
But when I test on the phone the button gets out of the screen if I decrease the size of the recyclerview it does appear can you guys give me a little help with this don't know to tell it to keep the 3 on the same screen
Giving width and height to views in dp's (or pixels) isn't the correct way. Because screen size isn't the same in all devices. Your design tab at Android Studio shows your layout in Pixel phone whose height is greater than your mobile phones. So, you can't see that button in your mobile phone.
I have added one line to your button and deleted another
Added this:
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
Deleted this:
android:layout_below="#+id/txtcartprod"
Changed height of RecyclerView to match_parent (to make it depend on screen size):
android:layout_height="match_parent"
And added this line:
android:layout_above= "#id/btn_placeorder"
Final version:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:padding="8dp"
tools:context="com.checking.movi.movioperations.CartItems">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txtcartprod"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Productos seleccionados:"
/>
<androidx.recyclerview.widget.RecyclerView
android:id="#+id/recycler_cart"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_above= "#id/btn_placeorder"
android:layout_below="#+id/txtcartprod"
/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn_placeorder"
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/mybutton"
android:text="Continuar"
android:textColor="#ffffff" />
</RelativeLayout>
I hope you understood all the changes I made. If you have difficulty, feel free to ask in the comments.

I added a fragment with an ImageView, which is a PNG image, and a TextView just below it.
The fragment is showing fine but when I rotate the screen the image will take most of the screen and the TextView is partially cut.
Here's the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/shopping_cart"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:src="#drawable/shopping_cart" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:layout_below="#id/shopping_cart"
android:text="#string/no_data"
android:gravity="center"/>
</RelativeLayout>
I'm trying to find a way to resize the image in order to show both image and text in the screen
try using a scroll-view as the root element if u want to retain the same image size rather than resizing the image. Here's a small snippet -
<ScrollView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fillViewport="true">
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
(all your view elements)
</RelativeLayout>
<ScrollView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/text_image_container"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
(Enter view here)
</LinearLayout>
Alright, so firstly ensure that you have the image for the ImageView in all densities. I would suggest that you use this attribute in your ImageView code:
https://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ImageView.ScaleType.html
The scale type defines how your image should scale according to the view. I faced a similar issue once, and i was able to solve it using this. Having said that, i have not seen the image you are using, so i cannot be very sure of it. But, i would say that you use:
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
you can find the definition of the attribute on the link provided above. Also, i do not know what devices you are targeting for your app, but its always good to keep views inside a scroll view so that they are visible even on a smaller screen.
Give it a try, if not by centerCrop, then maybe by some other attribute.
Cheers!!
Here is the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:gravity="center">
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/shopping_text"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:text="#string/no_data"/>
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/shopping_cart"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_above="#id/shopping_text"
android:src="#drawable/shopping_cart"/>
</RelativeLayout>
Screenshot of first image
Screenshot of other phoneI have a LinearLayout ,RelativeLayout,LinearLayout and a ImageView in it.This is basically a landing page of my app,inspite of using the dp my output is not same on the all device. There is the screenshot of two different phones. Thanks in advance
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/lb_LinearLayout"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/lb_Relative_HomeScreen"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="450dp">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="350dp">
`` <ImageView
android:id="#+id/lb_Background_Image"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:scaleType="fitXY" />
</LinearLayout>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/lb_Welcome"
android:text="#string/welcome"
android:gravity="start"
style="#style/Heading2.yellow"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="30dp"
android:layout_gravity="start|center_vertical"
android:layout_above="#+id/lb_Descrption"
android:layout_marginLeft="20dp"
/>
...
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
You need to create different layout files for the major screen density buckets and screen sizes. This way you will be able to fine tune your layout to look consistent across multiple displays.
You can easily create a new layout for a specific bucket from the preview window:
Click on this icon in the left corner.
Then select Create Other....
A popup window will appear then select from the Available Qualifiers the size item for the different screen sizes of Density for the different density buckets.
After you selected the desired item press the >> key, and you can select the appropriate bucket for witch you wish to create a new layout file.
After this you press ok and the android studio creates for you a copy of the current layout and places it in the appropriate folder for you, all that you need to do is to edit it so that it look the way you want it to look on the specific layout.
You should use ScrollView like this :
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/lb_LinearLayout"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/lb_Relative_HomeScreen"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="450dp">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="350dp">
`` <ImageView
android:id="#+id/lb_Background_Image"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:scaleType="fitXY" />
</LinearLayout>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/lb_Welcome"
android:text="#string/welcome"
android:gravity="start"
style="#style/Heading2.yellow"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="30dp"
android:layout_gravity="start|center_vertical"
android:layout_above="#+id/lb_Descrption"
android:layout_marginLeft="20dp"
/>
...
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
And to be more compatible with all the devices, try to use "wrap_content" or "match_parent" for height and width. If images are making you to declare dp in your code, then please go through this link :
https://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
I have problems with my buttons layout.
I made the "small, normal, large, xlarge" layout folders.
But still at some devices the buttons got mixed together !
When i view my layout using the devices set eclipse i can see the problem but i can't know what is the dimensions of the device.
My Question is: can anyone give me the dimensions of each one of these devices or who can i make a layout for each one?
the devices in the image blew
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/mainnati"
android:gravity="center_horizontal" >
>
<Button
android:id="#+id/b_info"
android:layout_width="220dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:background="#drawable/info" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/b_pass"
android:layout_width="220dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/b_comp"
android:layout_below="#+id/b_comp"
android:layout_marginTop="350dp"
android:background="#drawable/pass" />
</RelativeLayout>
Two things: I see two Buttons.
The second is below and aligned to the left of one that doesn't exist in your code (b_comp).
So, I guess it should refer to b_info, instead.
And, instead of centerVertical, I'd set centerInParent (which also centers horizontally) for the first Button (b_info).
I'd use centerHorizontal for the lower Button, instead of alignLeft.
So, after all, my layout file would be:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/mainnati"
android:gravity="center_horizontal" >
>
<Button
android:id="#+id/b_info"
android:layout_width="220dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:background="#drawable/info" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/b_pass"
android:layout_width="220dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:layout_below="#id/b_info"
android:background="#drawable/pass" />
</RelativeLayout>
So, I have this one activity that looks like this:
http://i.imgur.com/UzexgEA.jpg
As you can see, it has a button, a list and a button.
If certain conditions are met, I want to hide both buttons just show the list, but as you can see in the next image, the buttons are still taking up space:
http://i.imgur.com/OyLIfSk.jpg
So my question, what can I do to enlarge the list to take that space out?
Here is my layout for the buttons and the list:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/findSelected"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="registrarAsistencia"
android:text="Registrar Asistencia" />
<ListView
android:id="#+id/listaAlumnos"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="376dp"
android:layout_weight="2.29" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btnChecarBoxes"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:onClick="seleccionarTodosNinguno"
android:text="Seleccionar / Deseleccionar todo" />
</LinearLayout>
And here it is the layout for the list's contents:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/rowTextView"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:padding="10dp"
android:textSize="16sp"
android:textStyle="bold"/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/rowTextView2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:padding="10dp"
android:textSize="16sp"
android:textStyle="italic"/>
</LinearLayout>
<CheckBox
android:id="#+id/CheckBox01"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:focusable="false"
android:padding="10dp" />
</RelativeLayout>
Do not make the buttons View.INVISIBLE. Make the buttons View.GONE. There are three visibility states:
visible (normal)
invisible (pixels not drawn, but still takes up space)
gone (not included in rendering)
In the java code
yourView.setVisibility(View.GONE);
and in the XML code
android:visibility="gone"
Thier are 3 state
visible: normal
invisible : takes space and invisible
gone : no space and no visibility
Use
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
In addition to #CommonsWare's answer
You should use a layout that fits well in all screen sizes. If you give you layout a fixed height like android:layout_height="376dp" it will look good only on the device (or emulator) you're testing on. What you have to do is to make sure that your listview takes up all (and only) the space left by your buttons.
Check out this article and this answer to better understand layout weights.
for hiding your widget
yourEditText.setVisibility(View.GONE)
for visbility of your widget
yourEditText.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE)
I have a custom grid view for each and every grid I am using
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<View
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="30sp"
android:layout_marginTop="85sp"
android:background="#drawable/shelf" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imgThumb"
android:layout_width="47.5sp"
android:layout_height="76sp"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:layout_marginTop="29sp"
android:background="#drawable/pic1" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/bookCover"
android:layout_width="60sp"
android:layout_height="80sp"
android:layout_marginLeft="127sp"
android:layout_marginTop="26sp"
android:background="#drawable/book_cover" />
which looks like this before Graphical layout in eclipse
but when I am running this on emulator it looks like
Book cover image is gone I am new in android please don't where is the problem and how to solve it
you can use the frame layout for this purpose...
<FrameLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<ImageView android:src="#drawable/yourimage1"/>
<ImageView android:src="#drawable/yourimage2"
android:layout_gravity="bottom|right" />
</FrameLayout>
do not forget to set the height and width as per your convenience you can also pad them...
Try using same xml file using Framelayout insted of RelativeLayout....
<FrameLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
