I'm trying to replicate this half, semi-transparent overlay effect (obtained with css) in Android Studio using xml. However, I've got troubles in figuring out how to do that. Some indications would be very appreciated!
The Background is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item>
<shape>
<gradient
android:angle="45"
android:startColor="#ff4800"
android:endColor="#ffee01"
android:type="linear" />
</shape>
</item>
</selector>
I think I should apply another xml file as Foreground, but I don't know how to code it to create that effect.

Good evening everyone!
Is there a way to make my buttons look pressed without having to design two times each button?(one for pressed state, another for not pressed). I've designed the buttons' shapes using http://angrytools.com/android/button/, and using these shapes as the background for the buttons. I've heard about ImageButton but it doesnt seem to apply here as I need the buttons to have text.
Example of one of my background shapes:
Thanks very much in advance!
Try This Code, set this XML file as background to a button.
but_background.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item android:state_pressed="true">
<shape android:shape="rectangle">
<solid android:color="#9df20901" />
</shape>
</item>
<item>
<shape android:shape="rectangle">
<solid android:color="#892379" />
</shape>
</item>
</selector>
Due to a bug in my app on android 4.4, I had to change some of my xml drawable files.
Now I have this xml file that I use to give a background color and to round the corners:
My xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item android:drawable="#android:color/white" android:state_pressed="false">
<shape>
<corners android:radius="5dp" />
</shape>
</item>
</selector>
The problem is that my corners are not rounded at all!
Note that if I remove this attribute of the "item" tag:
android:drawable="#android:color/white"
it works.
But obiouvsly the background color is gone. I also underline that I cannot use this method:
<solid android:color="#android:color/white" />
This because for some unknown reasons it crashes on android 4.4 (as I said on top).
Does anyone know why corners aren't rounded and how can I fix it?
Thanks in advance.
Hi I'm trying to make a drawable which looks like a small vertical line with a circle attached to the bottom of it. I am trying to figure out if creating such a shape in a single xml file is possible (I know I could probably place two shapes on top of each other but I'm trying to avoid doing that)
Here's what I have so far:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<layer-list
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item
android:id="#+id/line">
<shape
android:shape="line"
>
<stroke
android:width="2dp"
android:color="#000000" />
<size android:height="12dp"/>
</shape>
</item>
<item
android:top="5px"
android:id="#+id/circle">
<shape
android:shape="oval"
android:useLevel="false"
android:innerRadius="5dp"
android:thickness="2dp"
>
<solid
android:color="#color/silver_status"
></solid>
<stroke
android:color="#color/silver_status"
android:width="1dp"
/>
</shape>
</item>
</layer-list>
This layers the two images on top of each other (I think) but what I really want is for them to be on top of each other
Anyone know if this is possible/how it can be done?
I ended up solving this simply by using the individual shapes within a linear layout to achieve the affect. Not exactly what I wanted but definitely does the job just fine.
I am trying to create a button in android with gradient + alpha effect but not getting it exactly what I wish to do.
Here is the image of the button which i would like to get :-
I am using the below selector for my button style & effects :-
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item android:state_pressed="true"><shape>
<gradient android:angle="180" android:centerColor="#657377" android:endColor="#AFFFFFFF" android:startColor="#FFFFFFFF" android:type="linear"/>
<corners android:radius="10dp" />
</shape></item>
</selector>
If anyone has any idea please kindly help me. Thanks
I need to create black iphone like gradient in my android application. Please view black gradient at the top in the image below. How to do it? Thanks
Something like this, perhaps?
<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:shape="rectangle">
<gradient
android:startColor="#FF000000"
android:endColor="#FF8E8E8E"
android:angle="270"/>
</shape>
I've posted a blog about an Iphone look an Android:

You can find some examples of gradients and what is possible using xml and/or 9-pacth images.
You can create gradients in XML
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:shape="rectangle">
<gradient android:type="radial" android:gradientRadius="400"
android:startColor="#88cce7" android:endColor="#075e81"/>
</shape>
This example is a round gradient but by changing type param you can create others.
Include this code in a xml file in your drawable folder and you can refer to that file when you set a background. ie. android:background="your drawable file"
I know this is an old question, but I was messing around to get this same effect for a customer who wants a copy of his iPad app on Android, this is what I came up with:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >
<gradient
android:angle="270"
android:centerColor="#FF333333"
android:centerY="2%"
android:endColor="#FF000000"
android:startColor="#FF8E8E8E" />
<corners android:radius="5dp" />
</shape>
