I have the following problem: I want to put a CardView over another one in an android layout file.
So in android studio layout editor the result is this and it's what I want:
the cardView round one top right of the rectangular CardView, at the same elevation
But if I start the emulator the result is this:
This is the code of the two cardView:
<androidx.cardview.widget.CardView
android:id="#+id/dati1h"
android:layout_width="300dp"
android:layout_height="483dp"
android:layout_marginTop="90dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="162dp"
app:cardCornerRadius="8dp"
app:cardElevation="5dp"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintEnd_toEndOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintHorizontal_bias="0.5"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="parent">
</androidx.cardview.widget.CardView>
<androidx.cardview.widget.CardView
android:id="#+id/info"
android:layout_width="40dp"
android:layout_height="40dp"
app:cardCornerRadius="100dp"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="#id/dati1h"
app:layout_constraintEnd_toEndOf="#id/dati1h"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="#id/dati1h"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="#id/dati1h"
android:layout_marginBottom="480dp"
android:layout_marginStart="290dp"
android:clickable="true"
android:focusable="true"
app:cardElevation="5dp">
<androidx.appcompat.widget.AppCompatImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/ic_info_foreground"/>
</androidx.cardview.widget.CardView>
I really don't know how to solve it. Thanks for the help!
how about make RelativeLayout
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<androidx.cardview.widget.CardView
android:id="#+id/info"
android:layout_width="40dp"
android:layout_height="40dp"
app:cardCornerRadius="100dp"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="#id/dati1h"
app:layout_constraintEnd_toEndOf="#id/dati1h"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="#id/dati1h"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="#id/dati1h"
android:layout_marginBottom="480dp"
android:layout_marginStart="290dp"
android:clickable="true"
android:focusable="true"
app:cardElevation="5dp"/>
<androidx.appcompat.widget.AppCompatImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/ic_info_foreground"/>
</RelativeLayout>
I can't see an issue with the code as you declared info CardView after dati1h that means info cardView should get rendered over dati1h. But this can be a device specific issue i have faced similar issue before (For constraint layout).
To solve it i chose to increase the elevation which will solve it for sure.
But as you don't want to follow that approach try using Frame/Relative Layout as parent of both CardView(instead of constraint layout) and it should solve your issue.

I have an issue with my App on Android Studio.
I want to know how can I put on the bottom of my layout (in a fixed position) without ruining the structure on various smartphones. I'm using a Linear Layout and the elements to put at the bottom are :
Edit-text (comments area) + Button "Send comment" in the right of the Edit-Text. Thank you.
Ideal approach is to use a ConstraintLayout, because it will give you a lot of options to do that. Using a LinearLayout if the linear layout height is match parent. You can set the item property of gravity=bottom.
Sample Code of constraint layout
<androidx.constraintlayout.widget.ConstraintLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<EditText
android:id="#+id/editText"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginStart="16dp"
android:layout_marginTop="16dp"
android:layout_marginEnd="8dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="16dp"
android:background="#drawable/bg_input"
android:hint="Taper votre message"
android:padding="16dp"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintEnd_toStartOf="#+id/button"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="parent" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/button"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginEnd="16dp"
android:background="#drawable/bg_button"
android:text="Send"
android:textColor="#android:color/white"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="#+id/editText"
app:layout_constraintEnd_toEndOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="#+id/editText" />
</androidx.constraintlayout.widget.ConstraintLayout>
Maybe you can use a new Layout called ConstraintLayout. You have to put this new layout at the same level as your linear layout and it will not destroy your work.
The preview looks fine, but the app runs differently. In the layout inspector, there is simply nothing where this weird white space is. It seems to be a problem with ConstraintLayout + ViewPager. I had the same issue in three places, all with same ViewPager, 0dp vertical size setup. I have solved by converting ConstraintLayouts into LinearLayouts. But the question is why do I need to regress to a LinearLayout? I originally wrote the UI with ConstraintLayout, and ViewPager, it was fine. Somewhere along the way, without touching the code, things turned weird and this blank space showed up. As if something in Android UI rendering changed under the hood. Anyone have any idea what it is, or how to solve while keeping a ConstraintLayout?
Here is the layout inspector image of the app running on a device. I have clearly marked the problematic white space with my mouse calligraphy skills.
Here is the layout preview for the following xml code, note UI elements fill the screen, no white space after the bottom toolbar in this view, unlike live app. Don't mind the colour difference, the app changes colours at run time.
fragment_layout.xml (Between green and marked blank space in live app image, the rest of UI is from activity, but I know that's not the problem, so won't add the xml for that)

My Linear layout solution simply included replacing ConstraintLayout with a LinearLayout, removing all constraints from child elements and adding orientation: "vertical" (of course) plus putting layout_weight: 1 in the ViewPager element. If that helps anyone.
My guess is that you are using androidx.constraintlayout:constraintlayout:2.0.0-beta2.
This specific version is known to cause issues like this.
Update to the latest version ('androidx.constraintlayout:constraintlayout:2.0.0-beta6' at the time of writing).
I'm designing my constraint layout using XML.
I have an OpenSansBTextView and I need my text to be centered in it. It's centered horizontally, and not centered vertically. I don't know why. Here is my xml file. Can you see my mistake?
<android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#color/colorAccent"
android:id="#+id/dashboard">
<com.doyousonder.android.utils.RochesterTextView
android:id="#+id/YourActivity"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="parent"
android:layout_marginStart="25dp"
app:layout_constraintVertical_bias="0.34"
android:text="#string/YourActivity"
android:textColor="#color/colorPrimaryMoreDark"
android:textSize="23sp" />
<com.doyousonder.android.utils.OpenSansRTextView
android:id="#+id/YouVoted"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toBottomOf="#+id/YourActivity"
android:layout_marginTop="15dp"
android:layout_marginStart="20dp"
android:text="#string/YouVoted"
android:textColor="#color/colorPrimaryMoreDark"
android:textSize="15sp" />
<com.doyousonder.android.utils.OpenSansSBTextView
android:id="#+id/VoteCount"
android:layout_width="29dp"
android:layout_height="35dp"
app:layout_constraintStart_toEndOf="#+id/YouVoted"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="#+id/YouVoted"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="#+id/YouVoted"
android:layout_marginStart="5dp"
android:background="#drawable/more_curved_edge_button_button_primarycolor_background"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="1"
android:textAlignment="center"
android:textSize="25sp" />
You haven't provided much code to work with, i.e what is the youVoted variable. I'm assuming youvoted is your parent layout
I think you're issue comes with how you set up your constraints. Try these instead
...other layout info
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="#+id/YouVoted"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="#+id/YouVoted"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="#+id/YouVoted"
app:layout_constraintEnd_toEndOf="#+id/YouVoted"/>
Explanation
I believe the mistake is you made is stating your textview should start at the end of your youvoted layout instead of saying it should start at the start of the youvoted layout.
change app:layout_constraintStart_toEndOf="#+id/YouVoted" to app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="#+id/YouVoted"
also add an end constraint.
app:layout_constraintEnd_toEndOf="#+id/YouVoted"
I have a constraint layout inside a ScrollView. This ConstraintLayout is supposed to be a parent for other Views that will be added into it, as shown:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout
android:id="#+id/generated_main_constraint"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
</android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout>
When I try to add view to this ConstraintLayout, I inflate the view from XML, with the following code:
(ConstraintLayout) getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.box_npcs, MAIN_CONSTRAINT, false);
This layout is defined in XML1 (end of the question).
Then I add TextViews with information to this Layout's LinearLayout, for that I use a programatically created TextView and add it into the layout
linearLayout.addView(new TextView("Foo"));
With that setup, I add this box to the main constraint layout.
The problem is: When I try to add more than 5 views, it takes a long time to proccess the UI, taking up to 5 seconds on the max amount of view to be added (50).
How can I add Complex Views to a ConstraintLayout in a way that it doesn't lag when trying to add the views?

What is the android version in your test device?
A few days ago, I found a problem.
If I use two or more ConstraintLayouts in Android 5 or 6, it will be slow.
When I used the Android Studio CPU Profiler, I saw the com.android.internal.policy.impl.phonewindow$decorview.onmeasure spent much time.
So I tried to use LinearLayout, and the problem was solved.
I think ConstraintLayout in Support Library is not friendly for Android 5 or 6.
I have two views which have to be placed next to each other horizontally and they need to occupy 50% of the space.
This can be done via guidelines easily.
But the issue is that each of the views has to be able to move to take the space of the other view in case the other view is gone.
This is not possible via guidelines but possible when chains are used.
But the issue with the chain is that i am not able to make sure both (when both are visible) take up 50% of the total width horizontal areas assigned to them.
Could someone please see what the issue is with the code below:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
