In my ViewModel I have a MutableLiveData source which I update with the visibility for an item in my UI. When I write a unit test for this function, I end up getting a ClassCastException on my MutableLiveData. Not exactly sure why I'm getting this exception because I'm using postValue to update the value in my LiveData. I'm not re-assigning the MutableLiveData anywhere.
This is what my ViewModel code looks like.

I have got MVVM / HILT project. I am trying to cover sharedPrefsRepoImpl with tests. For some reason when I mocking edit and trying to call putString it throws nullException and test fail.

You are creating a val sharedPreferences:SharedPreferences = mock() and passing it to the subject in the setup method, then you are setting completely a different mockEdit that has some answers to some methods, and you are NOT passing it to the subject, and then verifying that the mockEdit methods' must have been called.
The issue relies on the dependency being passed to the subject; it is not what you are stubbing methods answer on; what you need to do is the following:

You can try to use JUnit Jupiter library, it allows to test throwing Exceptions by using assertThrows method. For example if you want to test that service.getAddress() function throws some Exception under certain conditions you can test it like the following:
assertThrows<Exception> { service.getAddress(123, "en", null) }
This assertion checks whether getAddress throws Exception exception. You can replace Exception with another type you want to test.
If you want to throw an Exception you can use throws infix function:
coEvery { service.getAddress(123, "en", null) } throws NullPointerException("Error occurred")
I guess the error you get is happening due to incorrect return value. Please try to return AddressForm object instead of throwing an Exception:
coEvery { service.getAddress(any(), any(), any()) } returns AddressForm(...)
I am trying to mock this function below by using Mockk library.

but I am getting ClassCastException. I also tried to use coEvery and hint but nothing changed. I could not find much information about this situation in documentations.
My questions are, Where did i make mistake? What is the proper way to mock this function?

I figured it out.
I split my function in 2 parts. Then, I mocked executeProfileInfoGet part. Now, I don't need to mock launchOn function anymore.

What I believe is happening is that your mocked version of GiphyTaskRepository is exhibiting the default Mockito behavior of returning null for all methods that do not have explicitly specified behavior.
As such, your call giphyTaskRepository.getGifsFromText(apikey,text,limit) in GiphyTaskViewModel returns null, causing the subsequent call to let to throw a NullPointerException.
To avoid this, you need to explicitly specify what this method should return, for instance in your setUp method:
