Is it possible to rename the emulator in Android Studio? - android

Is there a way to give an emulator a name in Android Studio?
In the emulator pull-down box in Android Studio, the emulators created from AVD manager are labelled simply: "Android SDK built for x86 (mobile)(emulator-nnnn)", where n is an integer.
If you're running multiple emulators, this isn't very helpful. Is there a way to rename each emulator to something more helpful? For example, when I created each emulator, they have names of e.g. "Pixel 4 API 29", and "Nexus 5 API 24" - why aren't these used?
Update: Two screenshots show what I mean. In the top one, the "Nexus 5 API" has been selected; yet it shows as "Android SDK etc". If I select e.g. "Pixel 4 etc", it shows as exactly the same (it actually has an emulator number added that only shows when you open the pull-down).

Of course you can edit the name of your AVD.
In the AVD Manager, clic on the pen to the right to edit your configuration and then, you can rename your AVD
Edit: There names are correctly shown in the pull-down menu, even if launched

Well what #Bruno said is the easiest way, if it does not work that way you can either try this one, is a little bit tricky though.
In case you use Mac that's an example of how to do it, if you do not use Mac let me know and I'll put the steps to do it on Windows / Linux
Open in Finder
user.name/.android/avd/
Pd: To be able to show the hidden files press ⌘ + ⇧ + .
Find your emulator, in my case I'll show this one :
Open the Pixel_4_API_30_-_Android_11.avd folder (in your case will be different) and open config.ini file and change these two params (AvdId,avd.ini.displayname)
And now restart your IDE and it should be updated.
I'm sure you could change more names, but to ensure the functionality of the emulator, I wouldn't touch too much if you do not know what you are changing.

You can not change the device name "emulator-nnnn" from Android Studio as that name belongs to the device. This is the name that you see in "adb devices" output.
For a real device, you have to change its name by opening the Settings app from the device.
For an emulator, in theory you can do the same, you open the Settings app inside the emulator when emulator is running. But I haven't tested this because my emulator is very slow.

Can't change the Ram size in AVD manager android studio

I'm not able to change the ram size in the memory and storage section of the AVD manager in the android studio. I wanted the emulator to run a little faster (I have 8GB RAM). The controls are completely gray out.
If you create an AVD with "Recommended" system image then you can't change the "Memory and Storage" parameters neither when you create AVD nor when you edit your AVD.
Solution:
You should select your "Image" from "x86 Images" tab and then change "Memory and Storage" parameters in the next page.
It happened to me with an image with the pre-installed playstore app. Maybe it is an android SDK bug. Try to create one with no playstore app.
Look for your avd folder, then look for the folder of the image you want to change and edit the config.ini.

Here is a solution for Android 4.1 that worked for me.
Create AVD as usual over AVD Manager
Open location on the disk where AVD data is saved
open the config file that is there over the notepad. Inside should be a line that starts with the hw.ramSize line. There you should change the number of MB you want. Save changes, close file.
In Android Studio click File > Reload All from Disk
If you select View Details you should see there that ram size is changed now.

You can do so by editing the config.ini file of the int the avd settings look for this

Editing is disabled,but you can create a new virtual device by using Clone Device.. option.Once installation of OS is complete, edit the RAM again in Advanced Settings before clicking Finish.
Further adding to the answer by Fresher, it seems that even x86 images don't work(atleast its the case with my mac OS).

I just used "Clone Device" in Hardware selection wizard(the first one that opens after you click on the "AVD manager"
Then setup your ram here:
Once you hit "Finish", you will see your cloned device appear in the hardware selection wizard like this:
Then go ahead as usual.
just get the emulator whith api which has no google play from x86 images,just set your ram size, then change image to the api which has google play it has worked for me

android studio/eclipse emulator showing only part of screen

Since the last upgrade of packages, the Android Studio/Eclipse emulator shows only a fraction of the screen.
How can I view the whole screen again?
To re-install Eclipse does not help.
Two different settings influence the display size of a virtual device. The actual hardware display size of the specific hardware being emulated (Nexus One, Nexus S, ...) and the scaling factor that the emulator applies when rendering that display onto your computer screen. Both are properties of the virtual android device, so reinstalling Eclipse will not change them, but you can edit them in the Android Virtual Device Manager or on launching your emulator.
If you run your emulator from the command line, the third paragraph of the command line help page describes how to change both settings.
If you run your emulator from Eclipse, you may want to look at the launch configuration that you use for debugging your application. At the very bottom you can give the scaling factor and other properties as additional command line arguments. Make sure this is not set.
If nothing worked until here, just create a new virtual device for your emulator from the Eclipse toolbar.
First this seemed the solution: creating a new virtual device in Android Studio solved the problem.
The same problem re-appeared today in Android Studio. I found the definite and simple soluion. You can set it explicitly in the Android Studio AVD manager.
How? Start Android Studio, menubar "Tools" > "Android" > "AVD manager". Then set the startup size and orientation. I changed it from "Auto" to the one below:

How to create Android-M Preview emulator?

I think I have installed all the system images required for android m preview, but still my emulator is showing nothing, its always blank. Please help me

You have sufficient files to create the emulator might be you are editing the existing emulator, i suggest try to create a new emulator, and try to keep the Ram consumption lower to get better performance.
Refer from the above link you can create your new emulator by following below steps
Step-1: Go to Android SDK folder and run AVD Manager. Click on Create
Note: Use default value for Max VM application heap. As Android supports variety of displays, you can explore with different devices by selecting in Device: dropdown
Step-2: Select the virtual device which you just now created and click Start
Step-3: Do not make any change under Launch Options and click on Launch button
Step-4: Emulator will start a few Command Prompt windows flicker. You should now see the following screen, with the Android device booting up, which will take about five minutes

Step 2:Enter the Ram value to 1Gb if your system(Computer)RAM is about 4gb or RAM value as 2gb your system(Computer)RAM is about 6gb or 8gb.

Step 4:You should get a alert box showing that Successfully installed.

If you want to create MNC(Android M Preview) emulators, you could follow these steps:
1, Of course, downloads MNC System images. Open SDK Manager, select images like Android TV Intel x86 Atom System Image, ARM 64 v8a System Image, ARM EABI v7a System Image and something like that.
2, open AVD Manager by clicking the button on the top of Android Studio. Then you will see "Your Virtual Devices" window.
3, Click the button of "Create Virtual Device" at the left bottom of the window. Then you will see "Select Hardware" window.
4, then select the category and name of the emulator you want, and then "Next".
5, if you have succeeded downloading MNC System Images, you will see them from the "API Level"
6, and then click "Next", you will see "Android Virtual Device(AVD)" window, you can change settings if you want to.
7, click "Finish" and wait, util emulators are prepared.
I had the same problem,
I copied the system image from the default directory:
C:\Users\eli\Downloads\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\sdk\system-images\android-MNC\default\arm64-v8a
to the image root dir:
C:\Users\eli\Downloads\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\sdk\system-images\android-MNC\arm64-v8a
I restarted eclise, and now, I could see the android M and the arm64 system image.

sdcard on the eclipse not showing in emulator (Gingerbread)

I am having some difficulties setting up the virtual (emulated) sdcard in Eclipse. The target API is 2.3.3 (Gingerbread).
I have read and followed this article (Referred to me by a member here).
This is where the problems start - I have already made a sdcard.img file in setting up my AVD emulation. Ihave also put in the correct file path as per step 2 (and double and triple checked the file path was correct).
The problem is when I go to the DDMS --> File Explorer, it is blank, as in totally blank - no files whatsoever are showing.
I have tried recreating the AVD emulated device, and have restarted Eclipse after each step to no avail. Possibly a silly question (remember, this is new to me), but even though I have specified the parameters for the SD card when setting up in the AVD manager, do I still need to do step 1 (of the link above)?
You need to click on your emulator name in the "Devices" tab. That will refresh connections in the "File Explorer" tab with your emulated device. If you don't see your emulator in the "Devices" window, then reset adb.

How to emulate Nexus 4?

Is it possible to create an AVD to emulate the Nexus 4?
I am using Eclipse and I'm pretty sure I have updated all of the SDK tools etc, along with the 4.2 SDK/system Image etc.
However, when I open the AVD manager to add a new AVD, there no longer seems to be the ability to enter a custom resolution/density etc. There is a droplist containing several devices, but no Nexus 4, and no generic version with a resolution of 768x1200.
Am I just missing something obvious?

After Update your ADT to version 21.
In Older Version each time you have to set Add Custom Screen if you want custom Device Configurations as (if you want Nexus 4).
In ADT21 version you can get this thing done by
open AVD Manager, u can define your custom screen in "Device Definition"
Alternative (Much Easier approach)
in Newest Version you Don't Need to Set Custom Device
Configurations from the above Suggestion as much easier way is available for it. you >Just Have to Make Emulator With your Device
Configurations and after you will see those Configurations with
Emulator Name Inside Graphical Layout of XML
like after Created my Emulator of Nexus7 Emulator with Android 4.2 with Name as "Nexus7_Android_4.2" i will get this Device Configuration in Graphical Layout of xml automatically.
