Same layout but moved a bit to the right - android

I have 2 different layouts.
<ch.yourclick.kitt.classes.CopyBarVisualizer xmlns:custom="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/bar_top"
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="100dp"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
custom:avColor="#D11817"
custom:avDensity="0.0"
custom:avGravity="bottom"
custom:avSpeed="fast"
custom:avWidth="20dp" />
<ch.yourclick.kitt.classes.CopyBarVisualizer xmlns:custom="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/bar_bottom"
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="100dp"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:layout_marginTop="100dp"
android:rotation="180"
app:avColor="#D11817"
app:avDensity="0.0"
app:avGravity="bottom"
app:avSpeed="fast"
app:avWidth="20dp"
/>
The second one has a rotation of 180 and has been placed below the first one.
My problem is that the one below, looks like it has been moved a little bit to the right and I have no idea why. This is how it looks like:
As you see, they are not on the same lines.
I have tried to fix the second one with
android:layout_marginRight="1dp"
but that is not doing anything (probably because I am using android:layout_centerHorizontal="true").
How can I fix that?

I could fix that issue by adding RelativeLayout to each of these layouts. So RelativeLayout will be centered and so I can use the attribute android:layout_marginRight for the second layout to move it more to the left.
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
>
<ch.yourclick.kitt.classes.CopyBarVisualizer xmlns:custom="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/bar_top"
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="150dp"
custom:avColor="#D11817"
custom:avDensity="0.0"
custom:avGravity="bottom"
custom:avSpeed="fast"
custom:avWidth="20dp" />
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
>
<ch.yourclick.kitt.classes.CopyBarVisualizer xmlns:custom="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/bar_bottom"
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="150dp"
android:layout_marginTop="150dp"
android:layout_marginRight="2dp"
android:layout_marginEnd="2dp"
android:rotation="180"
app:avColor="#D11817"
app:avDensity="0.0"
app:avGravity="bottom"
app:avSpeed="fast"
app:avWidth="20dp"
/>
</RelativeLayout>

TextView below Image not showing up in Android

I am trying to put a text below an image but they are not showing up in android layout.
Here is the screenshot:
I dont' see any text below image.
And my code: inside a relative layout
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/layout_footer"
android:layout_width="match_parent"

android:layout_height="?android:attr/actionBarSize"

Not sure what is wrong?
Assuming you follow Googles Design guidelines
(Tabs with icons and text Height - 72dp;
Icon - 24 x 24dp)
Change 'match_parent' to 'wrap_content' for the ImageViews
The problem is you have put android:layout_height="match_parent" for image views and android:layout_height="wrap_content" for text views. Either use wrap_content for image view or use use a LinearLayout with android:weight property. Using LinearLayout would also solve your problem of alignment if it occurs!
Try setting android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" instead of android:layout_below="#+id/homeicon".
This aligns the text at the bottom of the parent. You might also need to set android:layout_alignLeft="" and align it to the corresponding imageView.
This method will only work, if there is enough padding below the image. This is because the text will now overlap the image.
EDIT:
Another way would be, to set the relative layout to a fixed height you know (like 60dp) and set the imageView to a fixed height (like 40dp). Then the TextView will also show up below the ImageView.

Using RelativeLayout, LinearLayout and layout_weight at the same time - weird behaviour

I've got an activity layout specified in an XML file - activity_intro.xml - and I'm trying to create another one that is similar but slightly different - that's going to be activity_instructions.xml.
The Intro activity has a 9patch image at the bottom of the screen that is supposed to stay there and only adjust to different widths of the screens.
The Instructions activity is supposed to contain the same image but above 2 more buttons - all three of these views need to be always located at the bottom of the screen.
activity_intro.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:background="#drawable/home_background" >
<LinearLayout
style="#style/Activity"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/introAnimationImageView"
android:layout_width="152dip"
android:layout_height="176dip"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:contentDescription="#string/intro_animation_content_description"
android:src="#drawable/animation_intro01" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/introTextViewTitle"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/intro_title"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/introTextViewSubtitle"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/intro_subtitle"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium" />
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/introButtonLoginSignup"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="#string/intro_button_label_login_signup" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/introButtonInstructions"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/introButtonLoginSignup"
android:text="#string/intro_button_label_instructions" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/introButtonReportAnonymously"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/introButtonLoginSignup"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:text="#string/intro_button_label_report_anonymously" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0"
android:contentDescription="#null"
android:scaleType="fitXY"
android:src="#drawable/footer_cityscape" />
</LinearLayout>
Result:
Since I've got working code for Intro, I wanted to make Instructions follow its example but the layout_weight property isn't behaving as expected. First of all, I was only trying to put in the 2 buttons and leave out the image:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="0.1"
android:background="#drawable/home_background" >
<LinearLayout
style="#style/Activity"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/instructionsTextViewTitle"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="#string/instructions_title_1"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium"
android:textStyle="bold" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/instructionsImageView"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:contentDescription="#string/instructions_image_content_description"
android:src="#drawable/forms" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/instructionsTextViewDescription"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/instructions_description_1"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium" />
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/instructionsButtonPrevious"
style="#style/ButtonPrevious"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:text="#string/instructions_button_label_previous" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/instructionsButtonNext"
style="#style/ButtonNext"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:text="#string/instructions_button_label_next" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
This only worked when I set the layout_weight of the bottom RelativeLayout to 1 (instead of 0) and for the ScrollView 0.1 (instead of 1). If I used the original values the RelativeLayout would take up all the screen. Could anyone explain to me why that is?
I also tried googling the issue and noticed people would suggest to set layout_height to 0dip which I tried but it also didn't work as expected.
Secondly, I tried adding the already mentioned ImageView to the bottom RelativeLayout. This, however, basically displays only the ImageView and not the buttons - or one of the buttons is on top of the image (hiding it). Why is that? Don't I specifically set the buttons to be placed below it?
What should the code look like in order for it to be doing what I expect it?
Further explanation:
Below are images that should help indicate what exactly I want to achieve. The green bits are the ScrollViews - I added them because Android devices tend to have diverse screen sizes. Their purpose is to present the content properly independently of the screen size, i.e. if the screen is small, the user will be able to scroll that part to read the entire text and view the image.
The red bit on the left (Intro) shows the ImageView that is supposed to always be at the bottom of the screen; it'll always be there, visible, and it's the green bit above it that will be movable.
If you take a look at the red bit on the right (Instructions), there's a Next button that's covering the image with the lorry/truck that was visible in the Intro screenshot. Now that's wrong - there should be 2 buttons BELOW the image, as seen on the last screenshot (the 2 blue rectangles).

How do you layer imageViews in an android application?

I'm trying to create my first real Android app, the code seems easy enough, but the layout is giving me problems.
My app will be a drag and drop application, very simple, just drag shapes to the correct place in the "puzzle". Here's an example of how it looks right now:
What I have currently is 4 ImageViews, one for the "empty puzzle" at the top, then 1 for each of the shapes below. I think the correct way to do this is to have each of the empty spots in the puzzle be an ImageView (what the arrow is pointing to, for example, should be an ImageView)
If I am correct on this, I need to "layer" ImageViews, put 3 "empty shape" image views over the "puzzle" image view at the top. The problem is I can't find any examples or suggestions for this anywhere online. So my questions are:
Does it make sense to have 3 ImageViews sitting on top of a "background" ImageView, or is there a more correct way to do this?
If I'm heading in the right direction, could someone explain/examplify how one builds ImageView layers?
XML for my current screen:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/emptyPuz"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/EmptyPuzzle" />
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizantal" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="false"
android:src="#drawable/Circle" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="false"
android:src="#drawable/Square" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="false"
android:src="#drawable/Triangle" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
The solution I ended up using was to add a new LinearLayout with the background set to a "puzzle base" image and added three new images with "empty puzzle" pieces on it. Ie: I broke up each of the 3 "empty" puzzle slots into individual images like in this example:
Then used them as backgrounds to a new layout, so where I had this code before:
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/emptyPuz"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/EmptyPuzzle" />
I now have:
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:background="#drawable/emptypuzzle"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/dropsquare"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:tag="square"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="false"
android:src="#drawable/emptysquare" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/droptriangle"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:tag="triangle"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="false"
android:src="#drawable/emptytriangle" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/dropcircle"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:tag="circle"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:adjustViewBounds="false"
android:src="#drawable/emptycircle" />
</LinearLayout>
Ending with a resultant drag and drop game looking like:
It's not pretty, but my toddler likes it. :)

Android RelativeLayout Design issues

I designed one layout which have total 4 RelativeLayout one is outer cover and 3 are child of it. When I put White color in the outer layout than no spaces are left but when I put 9patch image as drawable image than little default padding/margin are left. Is there any properly which solve the padding/margin issue? I have tried margin negative but it will hide bit layout I think it is not proper solution, here is my layout
when I put white color as background than my layout look like
Here is the following code of my layout
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/DetailSection1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/HeaderLayout"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/DetailSection2"

From the 9-patch drawable image you posted:
The bottom line which indicates the horizontal data population on the view wasn't drawn from the starting point of left.
I am not sure about it. And I know I wasn't clear in explaining the above line.
Just check this:
Consider the below 9-patch is used as a background for a TextView. If you put some text in it, it will start from the area where the bottom line is drawn. Which mean it will start from the left and go all the way to right.
If you use the following 9-patch as a background and try the same thing which you did above. Will result in Text not written from the left. It leaves a bit padding.
That is the reason why you get such result. Of course I am 100% sure about it.
So, just to find out if this works. Try changing the bottom line to fill complete image.
I think you better apply the background color for which layout you want exactly.And one more keep the code so that we can understand easily what is your issue.

Unable to specify the alignComponent for an ImageButton

I'm trying to set my TextView to the left of an ImageButton, but I can't seems to find this option.
I was expecting to use something like android:layout_alignLeft, but this option is missing.
I've tried to google the issue, but couldn't find any relative results.
Without it my TextView overlaps the ImageButton and I want to avoid it.
UPDATE
The full xml code is too complex, but here is the important part of it:
<FrameLayout
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:background="#color/white"
android:layout_marginLeft="8dp"
android:layout_marginTop="8dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="8dp"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/frameLayoutBalanceClosed">
<ImageButton
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/button_edit_nickname"
android:id="#+id/card_closed_control_editNickname" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/card_closed_description_nickname"
android:layout_margin="8dp" android:layout_gravity="left"/>
</FrameLayout>
I think what you need is a RelativeLayout. You can specify your TextView to the left of your ImageView with it's specifications. Your code would look something like this:
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/imagebutton1" />
<ImageButton
android:id="#+id/imagebutton1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</RelativeLayout>
The reason FrameLayout isn't working is because it's purpose is to overlay items on top of each other, which wouldn't work at all!
If that isn't what you're looking for, you could also use a TableLayout in which items are arranged in columns.
