I have an app with a navigation drawer and several fragments. The app has a collapsing toolbar, and the fragments have various content. Some of them are static from XML, others are generated in a recyclerview. Some have a FAB, others don't.
My problem is whatever layout I have below the toolbar, the container height is calculated from the collapsed state. When I expand the toolbar, I expect the below container to shrink in height, but instead it's just pushed down, and it becomes a problem, when I want to place a FAB into the bottom right corner. This way the FAB is being pushed out of the screen when I expand the toolbar.

So my question is what I should do to force the <fragment> element to fill the remaining place below the appbar and grow or shrink in height instead of partially sliding out of the screen.

So far I've managed to implement AppBarLayout and Toolbar with scroll flags and AppBar scrolling behavior and it all works great. My final goal is to implement something like this:

As you can see AppBar is transparent and the content is behind it. And everything else works perfectly.
From my observations when I put app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" (In my case I used app:layout_behavior="com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout$ScrollingViewBehavior") tag CoordinatorLayout does not let me overlap Views (In this case AppBar should overlap my content).

The fragment holds layout with NestedScrollView as a Root.
Remove the attribute
app:layout_behavior="com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout$ScrollingViewBehavior"
from the Frame Layout. Also, set the attribute android:background="#android:color/transparent" to your toolbar.
I am using android jetpack navigation and i have bottom navigation view in my activity. I have used the toolbar scroll property. So, once i scroll the recyclerview of my fragment the toolbar scrolls up which is good. After that when i click on any item of bottom navigation another fragment get loaded. In this newly loaded fragment the toolbar is automatically scrolled up if it was scrolled up in the last loaded fragment. So, is there any way that if new fragment get loaded the toolbar automatically scroll down to its own position.

I have set up a DrawerLayout and a CoordinatorLayout in order to use a modern layout with a NavigationView and collapsing toolbar.
It works just fine until the device is rotated. Then the main_content is moved to a new permanent location. If I remove the appbar_scrolling_view_behavior from the main_content FrameLayout rotation works, but the content is no longer aware of the Toolbar.
Any advice?

A few points that should collectively resolve your problem:
The height of the AppBarLayout determins the expanded size of the collapsing toolbar, whilst the Toolbar determins the collapsed size. As such, you should set the AppBarLayout height to something more than the Toolbar (i.e. 280dp) to see the collapsing behaviour.
Immediately inside the AppBarLayout should be a CollapsingToolbarLayout, which contains the Toolbar and, optionally, other views too (normally an ImageView with a parallax collapse mode)
For the toolbar to collapse and expand correctly, it relies on a ViewGroup that supports nested scrolling (RecyclerView or NestedScrollView. As such, in your example you should try either changing main_content from a FrameLayout to a NestedScrollView, or conversely change the FrameLayout that forms the root layout of Fragment into a NestedScrollView.

Let me try to explain.
Android draws Views from top to down so; A-B-C- are you 3 respective Views in your DrawerLayout. now A being the Toolbar is drawn first with params width fit-to-the-overallwidth and height fit the content itself, B is drawn with width fit-to-the-overallwidth and height fit-to-the-overallheight, etc etc. that means your FrameLayout is drawn second in the drawing successions and on top of your Toolbar but since its covered you do not see that it is there, if you bring it below, your Toolbar is drawn second in succession hence you see it.
i hope you can deduct a solution from it now.

I'm using the Android design library on API 22. I would like to:
have a Toolbar and a DrawerLayout inside which there is a RecyclerView
have the DrawerLayout be below the Toolbar; for example, when the toolbar is visible, the drawer's main content should be below it, and the (left) drawer should also be below it so that when it is expanded, the toolbar is still visible
have Toolbar be scrolled off the screen when the recycler view is scrolled down

It looks like though the RecyclerView's app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" setting has no effect, because when deleted, the behavior is the same.
I tried adding a RelativeLayout as a child of the CoordinatorLayout to define that the drawer is below the toolbar etc. but nothing seems to work.

As you can see, what matters is basically that you set app:layout_scrollFlags="scroll|enterAlways" for your toolbar to hide when you scroll. The RecyclerView at the bottom of the code is the one inside the DrawerLayout, the one above is the one in your main activity layout.
From the developers' page:
DrawerLayout acts as a top-level container for window content that
allows for interactive "drawer" views to be pulled out from the edge
of the window.
At first try placing the DrawerLayout as a top-level container (i.e. parent layout). Then place the CoordinatorLayout below and see what happens.
Plus you haven't added the NavigationView. Please check the fundamental instructions here.

Scrolling behavior must be set to the direct child of CoordinatorLayout (to DrawerLayout). This should fix your #2, #3 problems. And in case your drawer content contains recyclerView Toolbar will be again scrolled off the screen.
Its been a long time now but I believe it still helps someone.
Drawer Layout must have one child layout. According to android docs it must be FrameLayout because the XML order implies z-ordering and the drawer must be on top of the content. Visit below link.
Creating a Navigation Drawer
Add your AppBarLayout, Toolbar, RecyclerView and all other views in FrameLayout and make it a child of Drawer Layout. Hopefully it will run.
