I have been writing kotlin code for android apps for quite some time, but I decided to also start writing testing code too for my apps. I have been facing some problems though with the use of Hilt. What I tried is :
import android.app.Application
open class AbstractApplication: Application()
#HiltAndroidApp
class IgmeApplication : IgmeAbstractApplication() {
#Inject
lateinit var authenticationManager: AuthenticationManager
....
}
and then in the Android Test Directory:
import dagger.hilt.android.testing.CustomTestApplication
#CustomTestApplication(AbstractApplication::class)
open class HiltTestApplication
import android.app.Application
import android.content.Context
import androidx.test.runner.AndroidJUnitRunner
class HiltTestRunner : AndroidJUnitRunner() {
override fun newApplication(
cl: ClassLoader?,
className: String?,
context: Context?
): Application {
return super.newApplication(cl,HiltTestApp::class.java.name, context)
}
}
my Test class :
#HiltAndroidTest
class AuthenticationTest{
#get:Rule
var hiltRule = HiltAndroidRule(this)
#Test
fun useAppContext() {
// Context of the app under test.
val appContext = InstrumentationRegistry.getInstrumentation().targetContext
Assert.assertEquals("com.crowdpolicy.onext.igme", appContext.packageName)
}
#Before
fun setUp() {
// Populate #Inject fields in test class
hiltRule.inject()
}
#After
fun tearDown() {
}
}
my app level gradle file :

I followed the official documentation from dagger-hilt in this page : https://dagger.dev/hilt/testing.html, but I am still getting this error :
Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: com.crowdpolicy.onext.igme.HiltTestApplication cannot be cast to android.app.Application
at android.app.Instrumentation.newApplication(Instrumentation.java:997)
at android.app.Instrumentation.newApplication(Instrumentation.java:982)
at com.crowdpolicy.onext.igme.HiltTestRunner.newApplication(HiltTestRunner.kt:14)
at android.app.LoadedApk.makeApplication(LoadedApk.java:617)
and I do not know how to fix it, because I am really new to testing and it is the first time facing it !
line 14 in HIltTestRunner is :
return super.newApplication(cl,HiltTestApp::class.java.name, context)
I had the same Problem, while Testing i got a ClassCastException: HiltTestApplication cannot be cast to AbcApp (my Application class).
Solution is the #CustomTestApplication annotation, see Dagger Docs or Android Dev Docs and the use of the generated class
<interfacename>_Application.
Further on be aware that just using IgmeApplication (or AbcApp in my case) is not possible when it uses the #HiltAndroidApp annotation, see open Issue. Then you have to make an open class AbstractApplication: Application() like the questioner did. Which is then subclassed by your Application (AbcApp in my case or IgmeApplication in questioners case) and subclassed by the created class from annotation #CustomTestApplication. like:
#CustomTestApplication(AbstractApplication::class)
interface CustomTestApplicationForHilt
Note that interface is used instead of open class, but it also works with open class like the questioner did.
The created class is then CustomTestApplicationForHilt_Application which has to be used, when calling newApplication in your Testrunner class, like:
class HiltTestRunner : AndroidJUnitRunner() {
override fun newApplication(cl: ClassLoader?, className: String?, context: Context?): Application {
return super.newApplication(cl, CustomTestApplicationForHilt_Application::class.java.name, context)
}
}
Note that you can choose the name of the interface for the #CustomTestApplication annotation (here CustomTestApplicationForHilt) like you want, but the ending _Application will be added to the class name when the annotation is processed while building the app. Also note that the class will not be available before the build.

I am trying to use Firebase Realtime database in Kotlin.
I have followed this tutorial but I think that something is wrong, because I get an error before compiling when I want to retrieve an instance of the database (Unresolved reference DataBasereference (or database if I uncomment the first line of the function tryToRead).
This is the code:
MainActivity.kt
package com.example.spesapp
import androidx.appcompat.app.AppCompatActivity
import android.os.Bundle
import com.google.firebase.ktx.Firebase
class MainActivity : AppCompatActivity() {
private lateinit var database: DataBasereference //Here I see "Unresolved reference"
override fun onCreate(savedInstanceState: Bundle?) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState)
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main)
}
fun tryToRead(){
//val database = Firebase.database
val myref = database.getReference
}
}

I don't know what is the error. The tutorial seemed to be very easy, but I am facing with this problem.
Thanks in advance
You get the following error:
Unresolved reference DataBasereference
Because you have not added the Realtime Database dependency in your project. To solve this, simply add:
implementation 'com.google.firebase:firebase-database-ktx'
Inside your build.gradle file.
After going through documentations and trying solutions of similar questions here on stackoverflow, nothing seems to fix the issue.
I tried altering all related dependencies, trying additional dependencies and tweaking the versions. Gradle builds successfully but there is a runtime error that through trial and error, the only method I found that could fix it was removing the argument from the ViewModel which is not desirable for me as the same setup used to work in my older projects.

If you using kotlin version (1.7.0) shoud work with room latest alpha version (2.5.0-alpha02)

implementation "androidx.room:room-ktx:2.5.0-alpha02"

If you want using room in stable version (2.4.2) should work with kotlin version (1.6.20)
classpath "org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-gradle-plugin:1.6.20"
implementation "androidx.room:room-runtime:2.4.2"
implementation "androidx.room:room-ktx:2.4.2"
kapt "androidx.room:room-compiler:2.4.2"
I have tried both and they work. this is the reference: issue tracker
Update the Room version to 2.4.0-rc01.
In my case it solved the problem, and it works with Kotlin 1.6.0.
For me, kotlin-gradle-plugin 1.6.0 didn't work:
classpath "org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-gradle-plugin:1.6.0"
but 1.5.31 worked:
classpath 'org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-gradle-plugin:1.5.31'
Kotlin 1.6.0 with Room 2.4.0-rc01 worked too.
Thanks Stefano.

NonExistentClass cannot be converted to Annotation - app:kaptDebugAndroidTestKotlin

error: incompatible types: NonExistentClass cannot be converted to Annotation #error.NonExistentClass()
-- Two issues, one is I don't know where to put kapt { } and I tried leaving it as a global, but that didn't do anything and putting it in dependency caused a error.
NonExistentClass cannot be converted to Annotation
-- Unsure where to set generateStubs to true and where to set correctErrorTypes to true in my build.gradle file. I don't know if I can use annotationProcessor on it's own.
On my own I tried to implement android.arch before realizing it is deprecated.
I tried to use ksp but that returned an error stating that the complier doesn't know where the ksp() method is. Using
implementation("com.google.devtools.ksp:symbol-processing-api:1.5.0-1.0.0-alpha10")
did not resolve the error with ksp.
The error message exactly: "error: incompatible types: NonExistentClass cannot be converted to Annotation"
#error.NonExistentClass()

in gradle implementation "a-b-x" is used and in kotlin dsl implemntation("a-b-x") is used ,don't mix
Your database is not build properly (According to me) Here
I was trying to explore Hilt with simplest possible example, but my application isn't building. I added all the dependencies but when I try to build, it shows an error indicating not finding the hilt gradle plugin.
Here are my codes:
build.gradle(project)
ext.kotlin_version = "1.5.20"
ext.hilt_version = '2.35'

}
and the error looks like this:
public final class MainActivity extends androidx.appcompat.app.AppCompatActivity {
^
Expected #AndroidEntryPoint to have a value. Did you forget to apply the Gradle Plugin? (dagger.hilt.android.plugin)
See https://dagger.dev/hilt/gradle-setup.html
[Hilt] Processing did not complete. See error above for details.
Please suggest.
Kotlin 1.5.20 just came out (24 jun 2021) so there seems to be some compatibility issue. You can bring down to ext.kotlin_version = "1.5.10" in your build.gradle(project)
Also, Update hilt to latest 2.37
project build
classpath "com.google.dagger:hilt-android-gradle-plugin:2.37"
app build:
//Dagger - Hilt
implementation "com.google.dagger:hilt-android:2.37"
kapt "com.google.dagger:hilt-android-compiler:2.37"
