Importing an Android project into Android Studio, the error "Design editor is unavailable until next gradle sync" appears:
You can see that there is no option: Sync Project with Gradle Files:
Going to: File -> Settings -> Main Toolbar -> Android.MainToolBarActionGroup -> Sync Projects with Gradle Files
But the Apply option is "off" in the sense of being "locked", so there's no way to change anything:
And all options for Clean Project are not available:
Please what to do to fix this?
It can be found at the top of Android Studio, or at the top left side. Look for the little elephants.
This problem was caused because I opened the project in Android Studio. But the right to do is to IMPORT the project.
Thank you very much.

This button disappeared from a new 3.1 version of AS Toolbar. Before it showed as:
Now it's missing:
EDIT: They like to keep playing with the toolbar.
Since Android Studio 3.3, the icon has been updated and moved back across to the right:
Original answer:
It hasn't disappeared. They have just moved it between the Save and Sync files button on the far left end of the toolbar.
In Android Studio 3.3 it is here:
Is is available from menu. Tools > Android disappeared, so find it in File > Sync Project with Gradle Files.
For me I did following to make it visible:
Go to File -> settings -> Menus and Tool bar as shown
Click on Restore Default
You should see the Updated Android.MainToolBarGradleGroup as follows:
Click on Apply and restart the Android Studio
If you encounter this issue within a Flutter project and you cannot find the sync method, you can click on the build.gradle file and then click on Open for Editing with Android Studio at the top right. This will open just the Android project in a new Android Studio window and you will be able to see all the Gradle commands then (for example, under File > Sync...).
File > Sync Project With Gradle Files or this shortcut.
If you are creating React Native application, make sure that you opened your project in ~/YourProjectName/android folder
You can use this shortcut Ctrl + Shift + A to get not only sync but also other action if you found trouble to get them.A window will appear and you can type some command that you would like IntelliJ to run. Just type "sync" in there and it will find that command Sync Project with Gradle Files, even if it's not visible on the menu.
I had to open /android/ on its own in Android Studio (you can click Open for Editing in Android Studio in the top right corner) and then you have this options in the toolbar and in File/Synch Project with Gradle Files (when viewing .gradle file).
In Android Studio under 3.1 it's placed in
Tools > Android > Sync Project with Gradle Files
I am new to Android Studio. I am currently following this tutorial by Google. They seem to have a Sync Project with Gradle icon option. But I can't find that in my Android Studio.
Their icons(https://codelabs.developers.google.com/codelabs/tensorflow-for-poets-2-tflite/#4):
I can only see this:
Go to File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files from the menubar.
I can also find that icon on the basic toolbar:
If it is not there for you, you can restore it from the settings File -> Settings -> Menus and Toolbars :

I just added the google-play-services-lib library to my project and am stuck where I need to "sync the project with gradle files", but this button does not exist on IntelliJ 13.0.1. Is there an alternative to this function?
As alternative you can use Refresh all Gradle projects button in Gradle tool window.
I also have not found this button so I made my own :)
Open Gradle tool window with View -> Tool Windows -> Gradle
Start Macro Recording with Edit -> Macros -> Start Recording Macro
In Gradle tool window press Refresh all Gradle projects button
Stop Macro Recording with Edit -> Macros -> Stop Recording Macro
Save Macro with name Gradle sync
Press with right mouse button on IntelliJ IDEA toolbar and choose Customize Menus and Toolbars...
Under Main menu -> Edit -> Macros -> Macro Actions find your Gradle sync Macro, select it and press Edit Action Icon...
Download this icon Sync Project With Gradle Files icon (from documentation http://developer.android.com/google/play-services/setup.html) and select this icon in IDEA dialog window
Now in Menus and Toolbars select last item in Main Toolbar group, press Add After... and select All actions -> Macros -> Gradle sync
Now you have Sync Project with Gradle Files button!
There is a useful shortcut Ctrl + Shift + A, after which a window appears and you can type some command that you would like IntelliJ to run. Just type "sync" in there and it will find that command Sync Project with Gradle Files, even if it's not visible in the menu.
"Sync Project with Gradle Files" is not present in IntelliJ. However a similar option is available to build all the gradle files together. Go to View --> Tool Windows --> Gradle. A Gradle task panel gets displayed in the right side with the list of apps. Select your app and click the "Refresh all Gradle projects" in the top bar of the Gradle task panel.
Another method is as mentioned by "Avi Arro"
The Gradle sync is still there, under Tools -> Android -> Sync with Gradle
If you don't see it, then Intellij needs to re-link your gradle file.
Try closing the project, re-opening by File -> Import Project -> and select your .gradle file
In my Case, One of My plugin, Android support got disabled due to some reason , As soon as I enabled it , and sync it the button automatically showed.
Go to File > Settings > Plugin > Android support(Tick this).
and sync your project.
I haven`t seen such option in pure IntelliJ. I guess you are developing some android app. You should then switch to Android Studio (based on IntelliJ) where this option is available for sure.

Just in case someone who uses Android studio is experiencing this issue (can't find sync gradle feature), I'm posting my answer here. I'm new to Android, so I had no idea to fix this. What I did was I cleared the AS cache.
File > Invalidate Caches / Restart
Voila! The Gradle sync button is now there.
I have a project in Android Studio which compiles with Gradle.
The general file structure is
MyProject
- MyProjectSource
- Libraries
- ActionBarSherlock
My project is built with Gradle and will compile without issue. However in the lines within my activity where I include a component from ActionBarSherlock, Android Studio marks it as an error.
I have noticed that Android Studio has also generated .iml files. So my question: Does Android Studio ignore the gradle build when assessing whether something is valid syntax or not?
Obviously this is not a project blocking problem but it does slow velocity not being able to take advantage of the full set of tools Android Studio has to offer.
Thanks in advance for any help.
These are not errors actually, this a bug in Android studio( 0.4.2 ) for resolving the symbol and fixed for the next release( 0.4.3 ).
To get Rid of these until the release do the following
Clean your project using Build > Clean Project
Close your Android Studio
Take Backup of your project
Delete all .iml files inside your project
Delete content of .idea directory
Open Studio and wait until it completes the sync with gradle
Also verify if you are seeing any error in File > Project Structure . If there is any error saying "Dependency Not Added "click on that and using red bulb on right side Add them to dependency.
UPDATE
Android Studio 0.4.3 is available on Canary Channel Now.
UPDATE: #laochiv, I have found that cleaning manually the folder .idea/libraries and clicking afterward on "Sync Project with Gradle Files" solves the problem. Apparently this Sync does not remove elements, but keep the old ones and add the current ones. Probably a bug to report :)
I am having the same problem. However, I am using ABS directly from Maven.
dependencies {
compile 'com.actionbarsherlock:actionbarsherlock:4.4.0#aar'
compile 'com.android.support:support-v4:18.0.+'
}
Even the ABS Gradle Sample application marks a syntax error, although it compiles.
However, in another computer everything is working perfectly. I can not think of different conditions in each scenario.
"Does Android Studio ignore the gradle build when assessing whether something is valid syntax or not?" Yes. Android Studio imports the project configuration but runs its own compiler as you are editing and saving (you can even change it to the Eclipse ECJ compiler). The true authority on the build is Gradle, and AS is still in beta. You can try to run the gradle resync or close and reimport the project. I have had to manipulate AS like this many times, especially after making edits to build.gradle.
Edit: I have found it better to use ActionBarSherlock as a gradle dependency rather than a library directory.
compile 'com.actionbarsherlock:actionbarsherlock:4.4.0#aar'
You will need to use the SDK manager and install the local maven repository.
But it is possible to eventually get rid of these compile errors, as long as your build.gradle doesn't create any extra sourceSets that AS doesn't understand; try not to deviate too much from the android gradle plugin examples.
Also, I've been running the Canary updates of AS for the latest and greatest.
I don't know how to add a library using MavenCentral. I follow these steps to include a library
Add library in App_Name/App_Name/libs folder.
In App_Name/build.gradle add this
dependencies {
compile ---
compile files('libs/fileName.jar') }
./gradlew clean
Make sure your Android studio is updated.
Go through the link and it worked for me.
1.) Choose File option from menu on left top side of android studio.
2.) Select the option : "Invalidate Cache/ Restart.." It will open an dialog.
3.) Click on the first button with option : "Invalidate and Restart"
4.) It will close the studio and restart it. Start indexing of the project.
It resolved my problem
Go to File -> Invalidate Cache/ Restart -> Invalidate and Restart

I had this problem in Android Studio 4.2, it might be fixed on 4.3
I have noticed that adding some dependencies did not attach the classes.jar to the dependency, so Gradle recognises everything but the IDE doesn't. To fix it:
Open Module Settings of your project
Select the dependency that has the error
Click Add (+) for that dependency (bottom of the pop up)
Navigate to your-project/build/exploded-bundles/your-dependency/classes.jar
The IDE should recognise the files now
Hope it helps
I had this today and gradle update/sync didn't solve. But updating to latest version of Android Studio 2.2 update 5 fixed (was on 2.1).
Here i'm talking about android studio version v3.1.2 where this same issue happened. In later android studio version(above 3.0.1) this issue again rises. So, I solved this by going through few things and here is how
Close android studio first
Navigate to your Project Folder
Delete .gradle and .idea folder (.gradle and .idea is hidden files. so make sure you tick Show Hidden Files in your File Explorer option to see these files
Open your project in android studio now
This Time another issue (unsupported module) will arise, but don't worry. I got you
Goto File in android studio and hit Sync Project with Gradle Files
Tada..! you're done now!
Simplest Solution
Comment/Remove the dependency which is showing syntax error & Sync Project.
Uncomment/Add again & Sync Project.
Yeah! error gone...
