Looking for "limitations"
https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator
Currently, you can't use the emulator's extended controls when it's running in a tool window. If your development workflow depends heavily on the extended controls, continue to use the Android Emulator as a standalone application. In addition, certain virtual devices—such as Android TV and foldable devices—can't be run in Android Studio because they have specialized UI requirements or important functions in the extended controls.

It seems like Android Studio doesn't allow more to use the legacy Layout Inspector (without live updates), but that one was extremely useful.
I get it, the new one has live updates, but the connection time to the process is slow, sometimes it even restarts the activity if you don't have the non restart activity flag enabled. And personally I rarely need the live updates, I only need to inspect whatever screen I'm seeing at the moment.
Does anybody know if is possible to use the legacy layout inspector without going to a prior version of Android Studio to current stable (Arctic Fox)?
This button should disable live updates
I also have issues with the new Layout Inspect for my React Native app, whether live updates are off or on. However, the new Android Studio (my Android Studio's version is Chipmunk|2021.2.1) cannot turn off "Enable Live Layout Inspector" in the settings, Google has removed this setting. But I found that in the Keymap settings, you can set shortcut keys to Legacy Layout Inspector, and then use Legacy Layout Inspector through shortcut keys. Thank Google for not removing this feature outright.
I've got a problem after updating Mac to Big Sur 11.0.1.
All interstitial dialog windows, Device Manager, Preferences, SDK options, and etc, are not opened as interstitials/dialogs in fullscreen mode, but as a tab in-app. Then, Android Studio freezes and is not responding.
i.e.: Commit Changes Window
Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks!
System Preferences > General > set Prefer Tabs to never when opening documents.
Alternatively, run this on Terminal and restart Android Studio:
defaults write com.google.android.studio AppleWindowTabbingMode manual
This works while keeping the tabs active for other apps.
Go to the Apple Menu, select System Preferences > General. In the Prefer tabs when opening documents option, select "never". Then restart Android Studio.
I solved by clicking the -> System Preferences -> General -> Prefer Tabs and select "never". I have no problem using the latest version of IDEA, it may be that the version of IDEA on which Android Studio is based low.
You can try : System Preferences > General > Prefer Tabs and set #never when opening documents.
I hope solved this problem.
I think the ideal place to fix this is in the native code in the app launcher. In AppBundler we recently made this change which sets the tab mode before loading the JVM. It's basically the in-app equivalent of running "defaults write" in the terminal but doesn't require executing a process.
This week I updated Android Studio till 4.0 version.
Its new LayoutInspector certainly has many useful features, it's great!
but in previous versions of Android Studio i had the opportunity to open a few tabs of different screens using layout inspector.
Does anybody know how to do it in Android Studio 4.0?
Because now in version 4.0 LayoutIspector has another view in separate window and no any tabs.
Thank you very much!
Finally i've figured out my problem.
In fact Live Layout Inspector of version 4.0 provides complete information about app's UI structure and hierarchy for emulator/device with API level 29 or higher.
But if you need the previous version's view of Layout Inspector, then you just have to disable Live Layout Inspector:
File -> Settings -> Experimental, and check the box next to Disable Live Layout Inspector.
By saying visual I mean if there is a sort of option of seeing how the app might look on your phone while developing it using android developer tools kit downloaded from android website? I hope you got the question clear
Yes. You are building the layout with XML.
While you are developing you can switch between XML view and a graphical view.
This is in eclipse. Android studio hase something similar.
There is an layout preview in Eclipse where you could choose from a variety of predefined "devices". Also you could add your own.
I installed Mono for Android with the intention of using Visual Studio 2010 to design android apps. I am able to compile and deploy applications, but I am not able to view the layout designer. When I double click on an .axml file it opens in source view and there is no context menu option such as "View in designer." I am able to use MonoDevelop to create the layout, but I shouldn't have to do that.
Here are some screen caps:
Any tips?
It seems to simple but right clicking on the Main.axml in Visual Studio and select and choose Open with. Then select Android Designer should do the trick.
Despite that Android Designer can be set as Default it appears not to be working like that. I should say that's a BUG in VS and/or Monofor Android.
Are you shure to have the latest Mono for Android installed? (Version 4.2.4)
The Open With Dialog should have an entry "Android Designer".
Select this now and click "Set as Default".
Did a full uninstall, reinstall and reboot.
At first it didn't seem to have fixed it - my existing hello world project still wouldn't open the designer.
I tried creating a new project and ta-da all good now! Very odd.
I've very pleased to have gui designer. It really helps level the learning curve when learning a new platform - nice work Xamarin.
I did 3 installs until it finally took. I uninstalled then reinstalled and it still didn't work. I then just did a repair and it finally worked. Just keep reinstalling and you'll get it.
