I have two TextViews in a vertical LinearLayout, one serves as a display for a book's title and the latter as a display for the book's author(s).
I need the first to have wrap_content as its height, so it takes a good part of the linear layout. However, I want it to cap out at three lines max, so that there is still some space left for the second text view;
and I need the latter to fill the remaining space (0dp and layout_weight=0dp).
I want to use specific configuration so that the author view will be always right after the title view (on its bottom).
Something like this, however the max_lines do not kick in.
I tried to set max_lines to 3 and wrap_content for the first view height, but it seem that max_lines is ignored if height is set to wrap_content.
I also tried to circumvent the problem by sort of cheating and adding a max_height, but then the two views may be spaced apart from one another.
At last I tried to convert the linear layout to a constraint layout, to see if I could access some other layout settings to no avail.
Any help?

I have a TextView with a height depending on previous content, but there might be a long Text in it. How can I cut it off at the right point and concatenate three dots or something similar to the new end?

I found some solutions for Single Line Text, but how does it work with more than one line? I also do not know the number of lines, because this depends on the screen size.
Are there other typical ways on Android to show that the text can be extended? E.g. a colour gradient in the last line?

You should add following code for "3 dots" at the end.
android:ellipsize="end"
You should remove fixed height property
android:layout_height="50dip"
instead you should add number of lines
android:maxLines="4"

Android will take care everything else. In this way, even if text is smaller than 4 lines, android will take care size. If it is more than 4 lines, it will add "3 dots" :) Specify fixed height may cut your text.

I have tested 50dp can show two line in normal font size. So in 50dp height you should add maxLines 2.

I have rows (of horizontal LinearLayout) with a TextView at the end that displays time. An this is how it looks:
Now I need the suffix (am/pm) in all rows to be aligned vertically. This is not the case in the above layout, as you can see, the last row is misaligned as the displayed time is longer.
I achieved this using the tab character \u0009. This means I would set the text to be for example "7:21\u0009\u0009pm". This produces desired result as show below:
However, I need to know if (1) this is the most efficient way and (2) that this would work on all android devices. If there is an alternative way to achieve this please let me know.

Bonus points for pointing out a way to vertically align the hour-minute separator, i.e., colon character.
Maybe using tabs is the most efficient, but the gap is pretty big and not configurable. If you need all those rows in a single view group, you may try to check out RelativeLayout: align am/pm vertically on common left, and put hours to the left and on the baseline. This is the most flexible way, since you can control relative positions and margins, but computation-wise it's less efficient because it requires extra calculation upon laying out elements.
As per aligning colons — in most fonts (not just monospace) digits are designed to take equal space, so just align the numbers on the right (e.g. in relative layout) and it should do.
For the colon character, you could try using the character "\uee01" instead of ":". This is what google does with the clock in the lock screen.

You can use a 2-column TableLayout. The first column is the time without AM/PM and the second column is just the AM/PM. Set the gravity of the first column to "end" or "right" and the times will be lined up at the colons if you are using a fixed width font.
Context:
I have two AutoResizeTextViews inside a LinearLayout. I would like to have the first one about 1/3 of the size of the second one, and both as large as possible. Therefore I use layout_weight=1 and layout_weight=3 as can be seen in the XML code below.
Problem:
When I hide other TextViews in the View of the Fragment (stored as mView), using:

(..many more to GONE..)
more space gets available for the LinearLayout, and so I expect the AutoResizeTextViews to grow. However the two AutoResizeTextViews do not grow, and seem to keep their canvas size. They are moved to align to the new 1/3 ratio of the LinearLayout, so there really is space inside the LinearLayout.
When the Activity and the View is restarted upon device reorientation (I do not retain the Fragment) they DO change as expected, apparently the canvas is redrawn correctly then. How can I make the AutoResizeTextView to be redrawn correctly without have to turn the device?

Although the answer by Kastriot was very close, and also part of the solution, I found the solution today by testing the values inside the AutoResizableTextView class with Log outputs. The mistake I made was that I also had
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
Because of that, upon layout change, the width of the AutoResizableTextView was not adjusted! As a consequence, the text could not grow in size. Therefore the setting for the width should be:
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
such that the width of the AutoResizableTextView is large enough to fit a larger text.
I'm trying to achieve the following layout: a fixed width TextView aligned to the left of its parent, with the text inside it aligned to the right side of that TextView (that's why fixed width, can it be done other way?) and the rest of the parent is filled with a drawable (simple line). Like this:
It's a ListView containing 2 types of rows and the layout for the rows with lines is quite trivial - LinearLayout with TextView and ImageView (I can post the exact code later if needed). And I'm getting a warning that it could be replaced with a single TextView with compound drawable.
I'm all for optimization so I really tried to follow that advice. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the same result - the line is either constrained to TextView's width or text is aligned to the right side of the ListItem, now to fixed position.
Am I missing something?
Edit: Apparently it is not actually possible and since there are some other complications (the drawable is now a level-list drawable, which is not always a line and sometimes it has a non-fixed height that I have to set) I will leave it as it is now - linear layout, containing one TextView and one ImageView.
I don't think that you're missing anything. The TextView compound drawable features are not very customizable and in general are not worth the time you spend trying to get them to look right. Some lint warnings are a little overzealous and premature.
The optimization that the lint refers to is something that is better attributed for a fixed size image. In your case, the line has to stretch the rest of the screen length and as such it is not something that can be done with a textview with compound drawable. This kind of lint warning is more of a suggestion rather than something that MUST be done and is detected by just checking for a linear layout with only a textview and an imageview rather than checking what would need to go in the image view. If you already have it working the way you did it I think you should leave it alone.

There is no way to achive this using only standart TextView. If you really want to reduce view count you can create your custom TextView class, set layoutWidth to matchParent and draw line from text end to right border. But it's not worth to be doing. Some extra views won't slow your list.

This way the time text will be right aligned although being at the left side, and the line will also be visible.

Ensure your layout width is zero
left / right constraints are defined
layout height of wrap_content allows expansion up/down.
Set android:maxLines="2" to prevent vertical expansion (2 is just an e.g.)
Ellipses are prob. a good idea with max lines android:ellipsize="end"
0dp width allows left/right constraints to determine how wide your widget is.
Setting left/right constraints sets the actual width of your widget, within which your text will wrap.

For me this issue only occurred on Android < 4.0
The combination of parameters I used were:
android:layout_weight="1"
android:ellipsize="none"
android:maxLines="100"
android:scrollHorizontally="false"
The maxLines count seemed to be the random final piece that made my TextView wrap.
For the case where the TextView is inside a TableLayout, the solution is to set android:shrinkColumns="1" on the TableLayout. (Replace 1 with the column number the TextView you want to wrap is in. (0-indexed))
AFAICT, no other attributes are needed on the TextView.

FWIW, I had initially gotten it to sort of work with

You must use 2 parameters :
android:ellipsize="none" : the text is not cut on textview width
android:scrollHorizontally="false" the text wraps on as many lines as necessary
This should fix your problem: android:layout_weight="1".
By setting android:maxEms to a given value together with android:layout_weight="1" will cause the TextView to wrap once it reaches the given length of the ems.
OK guys the truth is somewhere in the middle cause you have to see the issue from the parent's view and child's. The solution below works ONLY when spinner mode = dialog regardless of Android version (no problem there.. tested it in VD and DesireS with Android =>2.2) :

In Android Studio 2.2.3 under the inputType property there is a property called textMultiLine. Selecting this option sorted out a similar problem for me. I hope that helps.
Just was working on a TextView inside a layout inside a RecyclerView. I had text getting cut off, ex, for Read this message, I saw: Read this. I tried setting android:maxLines="2" on the TextView, but nothing changed. However, android:lines="2" resulted in Read this on first line and message on the 2nd.

Also, make sure that parents width is not set to wrap content. This is the thing that I was missing.
I had the same problem. Following change made it work -
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
The ellipsis, maxLines, or layout_weight - all didn't make any difference.
Note - The parent width is also set as wrap_content.
All you have to do is to set your textview width.

I am using Android 2.2 and my textview will automatically goto the next line if it exceeds the screen.
If you would like to have the text goto the next line before the end of the screen, just add in (just put in your own dp value). This will be useful if you have a picture on the right of the text.

Strange enough - I created my TextView in Code and it wrapped - despite me not setting anything except standard stuff - but see for yourself:

When running it in the emulator (API Level 9) it automatically wraps the text across 3 lines.
Just set layout_with to a definate size, when the text fills the maximum width it will overflow to the next line causing a wrap effect.
