Calling a Fragment from another fragment - android

I have a slinding tab with 3 fragments in it. The first fragment has a button which should open a fragment under the same sliding tab.
I have the following view:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1QZMHJgpviceXlOWWFUdHdnTTQ/edit?usp=sharing
The final view i want on button click from above is as follows:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1QZMHJgpvicZzlSeXhLTFFlNE0/edit?usp=sharing
I tried using replace but the fragments overlap each other.
The code for the fragmentactivity, adapter and a fragment is as follows:
public class Slidingtab extends FragmentActivity implements
ActionBar.TabListener{
private ViewPager viewPager;
private TabsPagerAdapter mAdapter;
private ActionBar actionBar;
// Tab titles
private String[] tabs = { "Post", "Recent", "Search" };
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_slidingtab);
Log.d("Slding tab", "started");
// Initilization
viewPager = (ViewPager) findViewById(R.id.pager);
actionBar = getActionBar();
mAdapter = new TabsPagerAdapter(getSupportFragmentManager());
viewPager.setAdapter(mAdapter);
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(false);
actionBar.setNavigationMode(ActionBar.NAVIGATION_MODE_TABS);
// Adding Tabs
for (String tab_name : tabs) {
actionBar.addTab(actionBar.newTab().setText(tab_name)
.setTabListener((TabListener) this));
}
/**
* on swiping the viewpager make respective tab selected
* */
viewPager.setOnPageChangeListener(new ViewPager.OnPageChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onPageSelected(int position) {
// on changing the page
// make respected tab selected
actionBar.setSelectedNavigationItem(position);
}
#Override
public void onPageScrolled(int arg0, float arg1, int arg2) {
}
#Override
public void onPageScrollStateChanged(int arg0) {
}
});
Log.d("Slding tab", "ended");
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.slidingtab, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public void onTabReselected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
#Override
public void onTabSelected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
viewPager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
#Override
public void onTabUnselected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
}
Adapter
public class TabsPagerAdapter extends FragmentPagerAdapter {
public TabsPagerAdapter(FragmentManager fm) {
super(fm);
Log.d("adapter constructor", "started");
}
#Override
public Fragment getItem(int index) {
Log.d("adapter", "started");
switch (index) {
case 0:
// Top Rated fragment activity
return new Homefragment();
case 1:
// Games fragment activity
return new Recentfragment();
case 2:
// Movies fragment activity
return new Searchfragment();
}
Log.d("adapter", "ended");
return null;
}
#Override
public int getCount() {
// get item count - equal to number of tabs
return 3;
}
}
HomeFragment
public class Homefragment extends Fragment {
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
Log.d("Home fragment", "started");
View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.activity_homefragment, container, false);
Log.d("Home fragment", "ended");
return rootView;
}
}
I have the button in this fragment. I want the button click to open a fragment.
Any help?

Without seeing your code, I can't tell definitively, but you can try something like this:
// Create new fragment and transaction
Fragment newFragment = new ExampleFragment();
FragmentTransaction transaction = getFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
// Replace whatever is in the fragment_container view with this fragment,
// and add the transaction to the back stack
transaction.replace(R.id.fragment_container, newFragment);
transaction.addToBackStack(null);
// Commit the transaction
transaction.commit();

Fragment showing contet twice

I'll explain the structure of my app :
Activity --> Fragment A (Inside that fragment (A) i have 3 Fragments (B, C, D) (viewpager)) --> Inside the first fragment(B) it contains a listview. Every item from that list launches a fragment E.
So i'm facing an issue here.
When i first launch my application Everything looks fine.
But when Fragment E get's visible to the screen the tabs gets all weird and be like :
Yeap! they got duplicated.
When i click on the listview, i commit the transition between the 2 fragments from a callback in the Activity :
transaction = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
transaction.replace(R.id.content_frame, PF);
transaction.addToBackStack(null);
transaction.commit();
When i want to go back to the previous fragment:
getFragmentManager().popBackStack();
Is the previous fragment getting recreated? And what can i do to solve it?
UPDATE --CODES:
Activity :
public class MainActivity extends FragmentActivity implements

Thanks! is it something related to the savedinstancestate?
Your code design is a little bit wrong, fragments are actually pieces of activities, it does not make sense to me to create a fragment with more fragments inside in this situations, what you should do is create an activity for the viewpager and put into that activity your 3 fragments.
I have a similar app and this is how i handle the navigation between tabs:
pager.setOnPageChangeListener(new ViewPager.OnPageChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onPageScrolled(int position, float positionOffset, int positionOffsetPixels) {
}
#Override
public void onPageSelected(int position) {
actionBar.setSelectedNavigationItem(position);
}
#Override
public void onPageScrollStateChanged(int state) {
}
The above code changes the item selected of the action bar BUT does not change the view below the view pager tabs, you need to implement the following to do this:
#Override
public void onTabSelected(ActionBar.Tab tab, FragmentTransaction fragmentTransaction) {
pager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
#Override
public void onTabUnselected(ActionBar.Tab tab, FragmentTransaction fragmentTransaction) {
}
#Override
public void onTabReselected(ActionBar.Tab tab, FragmentTransaction fragmentTransaction) {
}

productDetailFragment = new PlaceSearchFragment();
FragmentTransaction transaction = getFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
transaction.addToBackStack("fh");
transaction.replace(R.id.maincontainer,productDetailFragment,"yourfragment").commit();
Below is my MainActivity with viewpager

how to renew the fragment when click at the tabs

I would like to create a new fragment every time when I click its tab.
I tried to get the tab and to create a fragment. But it doesn't seem to work.
Here is my code.
Main Activity
public class MainActivity extends FragmentActivity {
private static ViewPager viewPager;
private static TabsPagerAdapter mAdapter;
private static ActionBar actionBar;
// Tab titles
private String[] tabs = { "TopRated", "Hots", "NEW"};
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
// Initialization
viewPager = (ViewPager) findViewById(R.id.pager);
actionBar = getActionBar();
mAdapter = new TabsPagerAdapter(getSupportFragmentManager());
viewPager.setAdapter(mAdapter);
//actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(false);
actionBar.setNavigationMode(ActionBar.NAVIGATION_MODE_TABS);
// Adding Tabs
for (String tab_name : tabs) {
actionBar.addTab(actionBar.newTab().setText(tab_name).setTabListener(tabListener));
}
/**
* on swiping the viewpager make respective tab selected
* */
viewPager.setOnPageChangeListener(new ViewPager.OnPageChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onPageSelected(int position) {
// on changing the page
// make respected tab selected
actionBar.setSelectedNavigationItem(position);
}
#Override
public void onPageScrolled(int arg0, float arg1, int arg2) {
}
#Override
public void onPageScrollStateChanged(int arg0) {
}
});
}
static ActionBar.TabListener tabListener = new ActionBar.TabListener() {
#Override
public void onTabReselected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
}
#Override
public void onTabSelected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
viewPager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
#Override
public void onTabUnselected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
}
};
TabsPagerAdapter
public class TabsPagerAdapter extends FragmentPagerAdapter {
public TabsPagerAdapter(FragmentManager fm) {
super(fm);
}
#Override
public int getItemPosition(Object object) {
return POSITION_NONE;
}
#Override
public Fragment getItem(int index) {
switch (index) {
case 0:
return new TopRatedFragment();
case 1:
return new HotStoryFragment();
case 2:
return new AllClassFragment();
}
return null;
}
#Override
public int getCount() {
// get item count - equal to number of tabs
return 3;
}
One of the fragments
public class HotStoryFragment extends Fragment {
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
Log.d("Refresh_F","(2) HotStory");
View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_hotstory, container, false);
TextView tvStudy = (TextView)rootView.findViewById(R.id.text);
return rootView;
}

Android replace Fragments

I want to replace a Fragment by a new Fragment when an onClick method is called. I wanted to do it this way:
FragmentTransaction transaction = getFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
transaction.remove(this);
transaction.addToBackStack(null);
transaction.add(new ChooseCocktailFragment(), null);
transaction.commit();
The only thing that happens is the current Fragment is removed and the new one doesn't show. What am I doing wrong here?
Also, I use a ViewPager and this is the first time for me working with fragments. Usually I would have a Container with its ID but here the ViewPager contains the fragments, therefore I don't know how to use the transaction.replace(...) method.
You should use a FragmentPagerAdapter which is adequate to put Fragments inside ViewPagers.
A complete tutorial from android developer here
EDIT:
First of all, you need to override the getItemPosition of the adapter, and return the POSITION_NONE constant in order to be able to replace pager's fragments.
#Override
public int getItemPosition(Object object)
{
return POSITION_NONE;
}
Then create a listner for handling fragment switching:
public interface MyListener
{
public void onFragmentChange();
}
Your adapter should implements the listner and add some code inside onFragmentChange() method:
public class TabsPagerAdapter extends FragmentPagerAdapter {
private FragmentManager fm;
public TabsPagerAdapter(FragmentManager fm) {
super(fm);
this.fm = fm;
}
#Override
public Fragment getItem(int index) {
switch (index) {
case 0:
fragment1 = TopRatedFragment.newInstance(this);
return fragment1;
case 1:
// ...
return fragment2;
case 2:
// ...
return fragment3;
case 3:
// ...
return fragment4;
}
return null;
}
#Override
public int getCount() {
// get item count - equal to number of tabs
return 4;
}
public void onFragmentChange(){
fm.beginTransaction().remove(fragment1).commit();
fragment1 = NewFragment.newInstance();
notifyDataSetChanged(); // notify the viewpager adapter that content has changed
}
}
Pass an instance of the listner in the fragment you want to remove/replace later :
public class TopRatedFragment extends Fragment {
public static TopRatedFragment newInstance(MyListner listner) {
this.myListner = listner;
return new TopRatedFragment ();
}
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_top_rated, container, false);
return rootView;
}
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
// some logical here ... and when you want to change fragment do this
myListner.onFragmentChange();
}
}
Here is some more explanation of this.
You should also read about FragmentStatePagerAdapter : here
Hope it helps !
You forget hide your fragment after another fragment is added up on your fragment.
Just add more a statement transaction.hide(Your_Fragment) before transaction.commit()

Here is my code which my answer refers to. Since i implemented it using a tutorial it is very similiar, just Tab names and the content of the tabs changed. I also have 4 tabs, not three - but the problem would be the same:
TabsPagerAdapter.java
public class TabsPagerAdapter extends FragmentPagerAdapter {
public TabsPagerAdapter(FragmentManager fm) {
super(fm);
}
#Override
public Fragment getItem(int index) {
switch (index) {
case 0:
return new Fragment1();
case 1:
return new Fragment2();
case 2:
return new Fragment3();
}
return null;
}
#Override
public int getCount() {
// get item count - equal to number of tabs
return 3;
}
}
MainActivity.java
public class MainActivity extends FragmentActivity implements
ActionBar.TabListener {
private ViewPager viewPager;
private TabsPagerAdapter mAdapter;
private ActionBar actionBar;
// Tab titles
private String[] tabs = { "Tab1", "Tab2", "Tab3" };
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
// Initilization
viewPager = (ViewPager) findViewById(R.id.pager);
actionBar = getActionBar();
mAdapter = new TabsPagerAdapter(getSupportFragmentManager());
viewPager.setAdapter(mAdapter);
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(false);
actionBar.setNavigationMode(ActionBar.NAVIGATION_MODE_TABS);
// Adding Tabs
for (String tab_name : tabs) {
actionBar.addTab(actionBar.newTab().setText(tab_name)
.setTabListener(this));
}
#Override
public void onTabReselected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
}
#Override
public void onTabSelected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
// on tab selected
// show respected fragment view
viewPager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
#Override
public void onTabUnselected(Tab tab, FragmentTransaction ft) {
}
viewPager.setOnPageChangeListener(new ViewPager.OnPageChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onPageSelected(int position) {
// on changing the page
// make respected tab selected
actionBar.setSelectedNavigationItem(position);
}
#Override
public void onPageScrolled(int arg0, float arg1, int arg2) {
}
#Override
public void onPageScrollStateChanged(int arg0) {
}
});
let's say all Fragments would look like this:
Fragment1.java
public class TopRatedFragment extends Fragment {
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_top_rated, container, false);
return rootView;
}
}
The thing which should be done now is:
Replace Fragment1 on Tab1 with FragmentNew which should appear in Tab1 too! The OnClick-Event takes place in the fragment1.java for example...

How to update listview in fragment when back to previous fragment inside viewpager

Well, Consider I have have two fragments FragmentTab1 & ShowAllContactFragment. FragmentTab1 consists a list-view & and a button. When the button is clicked I replace ShowAllContactFragment in my viewpager. When shows ShowAllContactFragment, user can select several contacts by selecting check-box in a list-view & it also has a ADD contact button.
What I need: I want to update existing listview in FragmentTab1 , when user pressing ADD button in ShowAllContactFragment, after selecting some contacts in this list-view. I also remove ShowAllContactFragment, and show FragmentTab1 when this will occur.
My Solving Status: I follow the the android developers forum to communicate data between fragment via Activity. I'm almost done. I create Interface OnContactSelectedListener in ShowAllContactFragment & Implements in MainActivity. Everything is ok! . After debugging, I check my callback methods that I have data in MainActivity but I can't replace the ShowAllContactFragment & can't show the previous fragment FragmentTab1 & update it's list-view.
To open ShowAllContactFragment from FragmentTab1, I wrote like:
ShowAllContactFragment allContactsFragment = new ShowAllContactFragment();
FragmentTransaction transaction = getFragmentManager()
.beginTransaction();
transaction.addToBackStack(null);
transaction.add(R.id.fragmentTabLayout1, allContactsFragment);
transaction.commit();
My MainActivity & FragmentAdapter Looks :

Your question is not very clear especially the part about how you handle those fragments. Like when you're showing the ShowAllContactFragment fragment in which layout do you put it? From the code you posted it seems you're blindly adding the ShowAllContactFragment fragment directly in the layout containing the ViewPager which isn't right.
Related to the error, you get a reference to one of the fragments already managed by the FragmentManager through the adapter of the ViewPager and then you retry to add it in a transaction, action which will fail. If you're trying to show the previous shown FragmentTab1 fragment, after showing and working with the ShowAllContactFragment fragment, you should try simply removing the last recorded action of the FragmentManager through one of its popBackStack...() methods.
Edit: I looked at your code but what you're doing is still ambiguous. I've looked at the layout for the main activity but you don't have a container with the id R.id.fragment_all_contacts_layout so I'm assuming you're somehow trying to insert the new FragmentTab1 in the layout of the old FragmentTab1 which really doesn't make any sense(not to mention you add the ShowAllContactFragment to a container with the id R.id.fragmentTabLayout1 which I also can't see). Anyway, I'm assuming that you want the ShowAllContactFragment to replace the FragmentTab1 from the ViewPager. For this you'll need a wrapper fragment to hold the two nested fragment and also enable the communication between them. For example the wrapper fragment:
public static class WrapperFragment extends Fragment implements
OnContactSelectedListener {
private static final String TAG_FIRST = "tag_first";
private static final String TAG_SECOND = "tag_second";
private static final int CONTENT_ID = 1000;
private FragmentTab1 mFrag1;
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
FrameLayout content = new FrameLayout(getActivity());
content.setId(CONTENT_ID);
if (getChildFragmentManager().findFragmentByTag(TAG_SECOND) == null) {
mFrag1 = (FragmentTab1) getChildFragmentManager()
.findFragmentByTag(TAG_FIRST);
if (mFrag1 == null) {
mFrag1 = new FragmentTab1();
getChildFragmentManager().beginTransaction()
.add(CONTENT_ID, mFrag1, TAG_FIRST).commit();
}
}
return content;
}
#Override
public void onContactSelected(List<Person> contactNumberlist) {
getChildFragmentManager().popBackStackImmediate();
mFrag1.updateFragment1(contactNumberlist);
}
public void showPickerfragment() {
getChildFragmentManager().beginTransaction()
.replace(CONTENT_ID, new ShowAllContactFragment())
.addToBackStack(null).commit();
}
}
This will be the fragment that you'll use in the ViewPager's adapter instead of the FragmentTab1 fragment. Notice that it implements the OnContactSelectedListener interface. You'll also need to make some changes to other parts of the code:
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if (v == layoutCallLog) {
dialog.dismiss();
// make the wrapper fragment to open the ShowAllContactFragment fragment
((WrapperFragment) getParentFragment()).showPickerfragment();
// rest of the code
The ShowAllContactFragment will need to be modified to send the selection event to the wrapper fragment which implements its interface:
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if (v == btnAdd) {
Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "" + blockListedPersonList.size(),
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
((OnContactSelectedListener) getParentFragment())
.onContactSelected(blockListedPersonList);
}
}
And in the main activity to handle the BACK button when the ShowAllContactFragment is showing in the ViewPager:
#Override
public void onBackPressed() {
if (mViewPager.getCurrentItem() == 0) { // I assumed 0 is the position in the adapter where the WrapperFragment will be used
Fragment targetPage = getSupportFragmentManager()
.findFragmentByTag("android:switcher:" + PAGER_ID + ":" + 0); // PAGER_ID is the id of the ViewPager
if (targetPage.getChildFragmentManager().getBackStackEntryCount() > 0) {
targetPage.getChildFragmentManager().popBackStack();
}
return;
}
super.onBackPressed();
}
Keep in mind that you'll need to save the data of the nested fragments.
I used FragmentActivity and ViewPager in differents projects and there are two solutions:
1: You can use onHiddenChanged(boolean hidden) method on your FragmentTab1.
override fun onHiddenChanged(hidden: Boolean) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if (!hidden) {
// check if personList size is changed
// and then call updateFragment1() methode
}
super.onHiddenChanged(hidden)
}
2: Use a static method: you can ake updateFragment1() method static so when user pressing "ADD", call updateFragment1().
Hope it helps.
